Wines tasted in this episode:

2007 El Perro Verde RuedaRueda

line of the day – ‘this wine is very one-dimensional, and that dimension is water…and danger’

I find myself enjoying Gary’s asides, winks, frowns and general facial expressions almost more than the content these days. He was asking a lot of the Mottster to identify differences between the same wines opened at different times, and Mott duly appeared all at sea…poor Mott. Also a funny slapstick ending. Classic

Hi Gary! First off, I was thinking today how I live and breathe and dream wine–and have only been into it for the past year. How did I get so deep into wine? From watching YOUR show–thank you SO MUCH!!!

QOTD–I am into anything and everything jorge ordonez–the man has the midas touch!

P.S. Don’t most reds oxidize too much if left out for 48 hours?

Another fun episode. You rock! I love the dumpage of the wine at the end!

QOTD: I’m into wine, dogs, NFL Football (can you believe TO is now a Bill???), wine, travel (I’m leaving for Australia on Saturday!), reading, my family and wine!

    • You always make me laugh. I wanna be as eccentric as you when I grow up.

QOTD: I love NPR, and get made fun of for listening to it. Finishing my last semester of undergrad, then grudgingly entering the real world. I’m an English major, so naturally, I enjoy reading and writing. Love travel, headed to Thailand for Spring Break.

OQTD: Distance running about 4-5 times per week, doing Improv theater weekly at Second City LA, auditioning as much as possible and shooting a few commercials and independent films, and ALWAYS encouraging my clientele to TRY NEW THINGS on my wine list at Tasca Wine Bar in LA. The list I put together was heavily influenced by Mr. Gary V. and the views we share about exploring the underexplored and finding value in the under-the-radar regions and varietals.

    • What’s my scene?
FAMILY. Trying to get ready for the Twins that we have coming in August. Trying to keep our 6 year old daughter excited about getting little brothers or sisters. (We should find out the sexes this Friday…)Trying to keep the Wife eating and drinking since the nausea put her in the emergency room last week.

And after all that, getting things done as I can….

Really love the way you either love the wine or hate it and there’s not much in between. Wish more reviews were as user friendly.

    • Good question Gary! I try to get my body “prepared” for the Thunder Cruise, that means: sports, sports, sports. In detail gym, Rock’n Roll dancing and squash. I’m also very excited about our bi-weekly wine club meeting theme for next monday: August Kesseler from the Rheingau!

      Cheers,

      Nico

Though I love the guest episodes, its sure nice to have a lil calm one on one time with your good self. Its also great to see so many comments being left, something that must really inspire you to keep provding us with such great free content – really grateful for that!

Im currently enjoying the last days of summer here in Auckland, NZ where you can find my girlfriend and I and the grat outdoor pool close to where I live. We are also planning the next stage of our round the world journing – Africa here we come. Though it will mean no WLTV for two months which Im deeply saddened about!

My scene is working with high school kids on the stage (I direct plays) and in the classroom (I teach English). I try to make literature come alive on the stage and on the page–direct the media-saturated, tech-obsessed teen to the genuine, authentic voice of any writer who will get them to enter a world outside their own. Yes, Shakespeare, but also Alexie Sherman and many other contemporary voices. In wine terms, I try to serve my kids literature/writing/journalism that has terroir and is try to its origin.

QOTD – My scene revolves around family. It’s amazing how much children change your priorities. It’s a challenge to find time for yourself, but there is always time to drink wine with the ones you love! In fact, there is nothing better than sharing a bottle of wine after you put your kids to sleep!

    • My scene is food and wine!!
This is my second (and final) life. After many years in tortuous corporate America I decided to retire and pursue my dream of food and wine. I now own 2 restaurants in NW Houston; one is Italian and one is Spanish. I got my professional chef certification (at age 50) from the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) and am currently enrolled in the Sommelier program from the ISG.
All I serve is Italian wines in my Italian restaurant and Spanish and Argentine wines in my Spanish restaurant. People are avidly looking for good stuff and I must say that those countries produce lots of gems.
I follow your show faithfully as it gives me a lot of insight into stuff I may have not tried. I love your style! You have a fun in Houston.

Casper the friendly ghost….exactly why I watch this show! Do you think it’s important for us wine nerds to seek out the crap wine just so we can see what crap wine really is and tastes like? Just a thought. Anyway I love Spain and have wanted to go for a long while, and I’m glad you’re representing the area. Can’t wait to try “The Green Dog” and I REALLY want to try the Montepulciano.

      QOTD:
As I’m sure a lot of the viewers are, I am an aspiring winemaker but I love music and food. By the way Gary, you never talk about what kind of music you’re into…..so what do you listen to man?

      Aren’t Italian wines good?
QOTD: My scene(s) changes depending on my current enthusiasms. I’m into different things with varying degrees of committment. Probably best left to others to decide what my scene is.

The title should say “Ruedas”, not “Rueda’s” as it is not possessive or a conjunction. This error is one of my pet peeves. I’ll comment on the episode as soon as I watch it.

great question gary. my scene, as a CKC, consists mostly of commuting and sleeping. living in nyc and being originally from colorado, i do miss the hiking, snowboarding and such outdoor activities, but now i have to focus on my craft(culinary arts). i love good food, good wine, good beer, good whiskey, good weed, and good old fashion rock and roll. I am also a huge Kurt Vonnegut fan, as well as tom robbins, ken kesey, hunter s thompson, and beat authors in general. PS. WEDNESDAY IS MY 21ST B-DAY!!!!!!!!

    • Gary – props for pushing Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. I’d love it if you visited my site http://www.inside-abruzzo.com and tell me what you think (sorry if this comes across like I want to advertise, it’s truly not my intention). Barone Cornacchia is on my list of wineries to visit in the next couple of months… I just had the pleasure of visiting the Monti winery a couple of weeks ago.

QOTD: Been in the web scene as a freelance professional for the past 10 yrs. and finished my sommelier studies in Northern Italy last year. Since I’ve bugged the hell out of all my friends and acquaintances when it comes to wine & culinary treats I pick up along the way, I bug them less now since ppl in Munich actually pay me to ramble on during my seminars. Wanna get a dog so I can go “truffle hunting” in Italy but my girlfriend won’t let me… not cuz a trained truffle dog costs EURO 6-8K but she prefers cats!!! So now I’m looking for a motorcycle… she doesn’t like those either but since they don’t “stink” bark or have to be walked, I figure there’s not much she can say.

Thanks for the great episode. I liked the idea of tasting the same wine with different amounts of aeration. I would have liked to know (I don’t think you said) whether or not the cork had been in the bottle the whole time. It seems to me that it does make a difference, especially over more than one night.

qotd: Besides wine, I like live music (fusion jazz, jazz, jam bands, rap among others) and disc golf.

Jobscope is in the healthcare, nutrition and dietetic sector. But I love my wines, they’re my passion! If I have a chance I would like to take up a sommelier course!
But, most importantly is having a good bottle with good company. Without good company like my family, any fantastic wine will seem dull!

I am pretty knowledgeable about Iberian wines, which I am somewhat partial to over wines from other regions. I bought a 2007 Rueda Con Class last week and was pretty impressed. Although I have never tried the L&F Lurton, I have to agree with you that such an experience is not what I would call representative of the region.
