lone of the day -‘it’s like the oak monster, but it’s the worm monster’

Tremendous episode, tremendous guest. Watching Gary learning is pure entertainment. This is what WLTV is all about; new experiences and knowledgeable, fun guests. Loved it.

Gary, another great show, eventhough getting out of the wine world. i have to agree with some of the comments, you definetly are getting better allowing your guest to express themselves and finish a sentence. i was more impressed with the comment by Oscar Falcon Lara, it seems that he really knows alot of mexican teguilas and agave. great show and comments.

my daughter is the most joyful person that i know.

Big G, I love at the end you just dropped a huge F-Bomb like it weren’t no thang.
Mezcal looks like a must try. Can’t wait.

QOTD: It’s too easy to be negative Bro!

  • QOTD (Gary’s): I have never ever tried a Mezcal, probably because I despise tequilla so much (once drank a bottle of Cuervo in one night, haven’t been able to look at the stuff since).

QOTD (Guest’s): I imagine, like Richard, my sense of optimism comes from my beautiful and loving fiancée, Patrice. She keeps me going every day!

  • Facinating education; very, very cool stuff.

Fake QOTD: I had mezcal once, couldn’t tell you which type, my friend worked at a bar with high end spirits and gave me a taste once saying “it’s like tequila but not.”

QOTD: Amazing question, it starts with me waking up 6-feet above ground (not below it) and knowing that compared to everyting going on out there in the world, I have it pretty well and millions would do anything to have the opportunites that are afforded to me.

  • Christopher Scoggin

Nice laid back episode. You did much better with holding back on the interruptions 😉 I am not into ‘hard’ spirits so it is not my thing but I love the idea of the very traditional manufacturing processes.

    GV_QOTD: I have never had a Mezcal

QOTD: It is somewhat trite but what optimism I have comes from my family. It is hard to be too much of a downer after spending the afternoon hanging out with the kids.

EXCELLENT episode! Mini QOTD: oh God, unfortunately I used to drink a *lot* of Gusano Rojo, which after Richard explained about the “worm tincture” made me throw up just a little in my mouth. Never again! I’m definitely going to seek out the Sombra. QOTD: I’m debt free and I work for the Federal Government 🙂 Now…where’s the episode with Kevin???

  • Off the hook GV. Hearing Richard talk about a little known spirit and the process to make it actually makes me inspired !!
QOTD: Turning 40 last year has changed my life and the reality that spending so many days being unhappy didn’t get me anywhere, so now I get up everyday and try to figure out how I can get away from the day job and make wine fulltime, but in this economy a stable job is a good thing, but it can kill the spirit big time. All I can do is look towards the future and keep trying new things, especially Mescal, digging the adventure for sure.
Hey maybe Richard would be willing to lead a weeklong bootcamp for making Mescal so those who are interested could try it first hand ??
Keep on mixing up the shows, loving it !!

You’ve never had a smoky spirit before? You should try a single malt scotch from Islay like Lagavulin. It’s a smoky, peaty monster.

QOTD: My sense of optimism comes from my confidence in myself and the people I care about.

I have not had sipping mescal but have done shots of it with the worm and scorpion. Not my favorite but very open to trying more.

I liked this show, not just for the info about mescal but the move towards expanding my tastes…I think you should continue to add shows like this; I especially liked the insight into how it is made. One other idea would be to get into the rituals/etiquette of different wines/spirits.

QOTD: as many have said I get it from my family, no matter how bad things are on the outside a smile from my daughter makes you forget whatever is wrong and shows you what is right with the world.

  • Fake QOTD: Not Yet, But thank you and your guest for throwing it on my radar.

QOTD:(You may want to substitute in Jets) But my optimism lives and dies with Bruins wins and loses. Truly however, striving to reach my goals and enjoying the relationships along the way light my fire.

  • Questions of the Day–
Gary: I have not heard, much less had mez cal before today. However, after watching this episode I have placed an order for Los Danzantes Mezcal from one of the local shops and I greatly look forward to trying it out.
Richard: I have struggled with fining a sense of optimism in my life, historically, because of a lot of hardships and unfortunate mistakes I have made. However, in more recent years I have learned how holding a big picture perspective, setting long term goals (hopes and dreams), and having a plan to achieve those goals allows me to have a sense of optimism. Looking at the world as a place of near endless possibility and realizing I am blessed to have a great amount of control over those possibilities gives me great optimism about my present and future.

Mini QOTD: Yes, and I do think it is a sipper, not a mixer if it is without worm. I also love scotch.

Great guest, will seek out some of Richard’s wines. People should meet the winemaker whenever possible. Robert Sinskey’s winemaker, Jeff Virnig, crashed my brother’s wedding in CA at Costanoa. Looked him up on a subsequent trip to Napa and had a few laughs. Also was fortunate to meet Richard Arrowood literally while he was crushing cabernet. Handed us a cluster to taste and chatted about his craft… unbelievable. I will never foget it.

QOTD (from Richard): My optimism comes from my kids (daughter almost four, son 10 months). When things get tough, I look at the way they look at our world, completely unburdoned by CNN and CNBC and ready to go as soon as they open their eyes. That is the way to approach life.

1st QOTD: No, and I’ve always been interested in that damn worm!

2nd QOTD: I get a great sense of optimism from HARDCORE music! Bands like H20 (NYC), Bane (Boston), Sick of it All (NYC), Hatebreed (CT), Earth Crisis (NY)!

You gotta keep your PMA = Postive Mental Attitude!!!

    A. i had no idea what the hell mezcal was. i will keep an eye out for it at the bar. 50 bones might be to heavy right now for a bottle of something i do not know, but it will be tried at the bar.

    QOTD A – NO

QOTD B – i appreciate the question. to be honest, probably myself. internally. deep inside. i can actually say that i am inherently optimistic. my son too who is 3. he in a sense keeps me optimistic cause he is just filled with potential.

I’m gonna score this interview 79+ points, because once again the “Interruption Monster” reared his shaved head, dominating Richard’s silky, bright, classy mid-palate and leaving the whole rather disjointed and harsh. Short on the finish, too.

Other than that, very informative. You should definetly let the cameras roll next time you go there, Richard–sounds beautiful and rustic, and actually seeing the process would be worth a thousand words.

The only Mescal I can remember was some brown filth with a worm in it back in high school–nasty!

QOTD: My Mom, my Dutch heritage, my appreciation and curiosity for all things beautiful–and the ever-challenging task of capturing it with my camera(or nose), and always wanting to know what’s over the next hill….
