line of the day – ‘ I would like to have pig snout and ears with this wine’

Love Gary in this episode; he rolled with the negative feedback of the ‘College humor’ episode beautifully. As he says, you have to try different things, some will work, some won’t. Glad to see that he isn’t going to dwell on it at all. Back to his incisive, funny, super ‘on point’ self. Picking the ‘Suxx’ wine a masterstroke.

Gary-great show. I didn’t mind yesterdays show but please don’t spit in hotel ice buckets in the future, you know those are just rinsed between guests.

How about some serious kudos for doing this almost every day – 650x (!) in a row, delivering a very energetic show from the hotel after what I’m sure was a long day. I’m sitting here dead tired after a day at work, I can barely open a bottle, but you bring the thunder every day. For free I might add.

    Thanks GV!

  • Your show is never boring. I love watching, your show is fun to watch, and this lurker has to say hello to you. Lasts night show was different, and I am glad you are willing to take risks like that, even if I made some comment to the computer after watching, hahaha. I just like your show, and thanks for being you.

    Great show.
I really didn’t think yesterdays was that bad, i left a “lame” comment early because i had some trouble viewing it. So i hope didn’t misconstrue that as a negative comment on the content. While a slightly awkward episode i didn’t think it was bad. Everyone is passionate here but let’s calm down and realize that they can’t all be winners.
Again great show today your the best thing going… keep up the good work.
I’d like to see another sort of component tasting show those are off the meter!

  • I echo the comments about this being a good show — pretty tight & focused, especially for a road show. Yeah, yesterday’s show didn’t bring the thunder but I understand you wanna mix it up, Gary, so kudos for the attempt.

I had a great Verdejo recently too — the 2005 Naia Naiades from Rueda($24 marked down from $36 since it was peaking), which gave off luscious melon fruit with a good dose of grass, straw and even a hint of petrichor. It was delicious! I’m gonna have to get me more of that one…

Very enjoyable episode – sad that none of the wines are available in my region (Toronto)

Said it yesterday and I’ll say it again, the blind tasting episodes are the most fun. Time for another.

Also – still can’t figure out why you bother to rinse the glasses between wines but not your palate. Seems bass – ackwards to me.

  • JC

Great hotel show, GV. Appreciate how you work it while on the road. Good stuff.

QOTD – It’s all good, some are just better than others…KUTGW!!!!!

  • Never considered myself a serious wine guy, Gary, but your energy makes me want to start shopping. ..and you’re showing the whole traveling for work thing can have more of an upside!

  • TJ

2004 Jordan Cab (not as good as 2003) and 2007 Ruffino Classico Chianti (not too bad for 8 bones)…

Great classic WLTV show! Even if it was in a hotel and without Mott. I might not had liked the show yesterday but who cares! 99% of your shows ROCK! Always a fan!

Gary – QOTD: OK, here you go:

Good ep! I really enjoy the flipcam and the hotel shows, although the “zooming action” is a little lacking… I also demand that you hone your Chewy impression: this could go somewhere as a sidekick to the Oak Monster (AHhhh!), the much friendlier Chewy could make occasional appearances.

Thank YOU Gary! We watch ’cause you put out 😉
Nice to see you are better set up for the hotel room format: glasses, spit bucket, cork screw, etc. Maybe you can have an on the road series!

I’ve started a wine course about a month ago and I must admit that my loyalty to WLTV has been fruitful. I find myself bringing in a fair amount of what I have learned watching the show.

Thanks again for being there and taking us with you on your trips around!

PS: Don’t feel bad for yesterday’s show. You can’t make everyone happy all the time!

    Cheers!

  • Love how you addressed the negative feedback on yesterday’s show. Up front, honest, transparent, move on.

You practice what you preach my man and it’s appreciated.

Love these shows where you are alone and pump it out anyway. Makes me laugh that you are there alone yelling at a camera.

Good episode, next time would be neat to have the flip cam in the store and share some insight into your selection…store layout etc.

Sorry yesterdays comments hurt your feelings. I’m sure those guys are actually funny. Anyway, no-one can blame you for trying. It’s about expanding your palate, right?

But holy crap they were annoying.

While you’re in LA hit Wally’s on Westwood Blvd. You can buy good wine AND sell a screenplay.

Much better show than yesterday — especially good for a traveling episode.

I thought Gary’s comment about “serious” white wines was interesting. I read that in the 70’s (when Gary was a babe and I was first tasting wine) white wines made up about 75% of wine sales in the US. Wholesalers were requiring buyers to include a certain percentage of reds in their orders so they could move their stock. Maybe after that excess the US market starting seeing white wines as mostly just “pop” wine and reds as the serious and edgy alternative.

I always thought that whites went down more easily and so were easier to get drunk on. It’s pretty easy to drink a shapeless Chenin Blanc without noticing. It’s hard to see that same wine as a “serious” wine.

Great episode Gary. This episode had everything: laughs, wine nerd info, good reviews, good scores. Awesome! Thank You so much for qantity and quality of content. You give from the heart and that should be appreciated wether we like it or not.

btw. please resume reading the comments on air in the next show. I really enjoy it even when they aren’t my comments.

You’re a flippin’ joker! Can’t believe you liked those ridiculous Australian wines with their STUPID marketing and monster ALC%!!! One minute I’m giving you major props for keeping it REAL in Decanter (best wine mag in the world) and then BOOM! lost respect… you’re going to have to do an episode on Loire Chenin, Ribera Sacra or Cru Beaujolais to get me back. Suxx straight up sucks… wine that it meant for distillation, bra! BTW, nice use of the hotel TV for the Rave-club lighting effect?!

Gary, first off, we met last spring at your Austin book signing. You might recall from viddler, I’m “Big-Fruit Shiraz Guy”: http://www.viddler.com/explore/imdane/videos/3/0.425/

Second, no shit, BEFORE watching today’s episode, I popped & poured the `07 ‘Dooker Violinist. When I saw you review the `08, I about fell out of my chair…Small world!

For my full note, check out Cellartracker, user-name “Bacchant”. What I got was: pale golden color; Loads of seductive fruit on the intitial attack, which hollowed out quickly through the midpalate, which then gave way to LOADS of very nice acidity from there, onward. If blind, I no doubt would’ve pegged it as a NZ Sauvignon Blanc, blended perhaps with some Chard/Semillion. Scored it 89.

Now, admittedly, I’m primarily a “devout lurker” here, but now that I’ve shared a timely comment here, show a fellow “brother-in-wine” some love and reference this note on your next show! [something missing from your instant “on the road” episode, btw…].

Finally, you really ought to review some more Zind Humbrecht wines. An entry level `06 Pino Gris of theirs absolutely rocked my world recently! Further proof-positive that world class whites exist, even outside the Mosel!

Love the show, keep up the great work!
