line of the day – ‘ I would like to have pig snout and ears with this wine’

Love Gary in this episode; he rolled with the negative feedback of the ‘College humor’ episode beautifully. As he says, you have to try different things, some will work, some won’t. Glad to see that he isn’t going to dwell on it at all. Back to his incisive, funny, super ‘on point’ self. Picking the ‘Suxx’ wine a masterstroke.

QOTD: dude, we appreciate the output. we just do-not appreciate to be expected to watch a 30-min. infomercial put on for someone who has nothing whatsoever to contribute to our wine knowledge.

i understand to some extent what you are trying to do in terms of social networking, but those type of shows would need a different approach. maybe have them drink apple juice and then different white wines or pomegranate juice and certain red wines and see if they catch it….i dunno.

but the standard ‘taste/rate 3 wines format’ does not really flow in those circumstances.

p.s. excellent episdoe. well done, sir.

GV- now THATS the Thunder we all know and love!! Great show; I especially liked the way YOU took the heat for the 2 a$$clowns that wrecked yesterdays WLTV show! Dude, there is NO WAY that epic fail had anything to do with YOU! I actually re-watched the ep.649 disaster,(as much as I could stand anyway)and you were trying everything to get the pace kickin’… Thanks for all the effort and for being up front, in all things!

QOTD: We ALL make mistakes…it’s what we take AWAY from them, that makes us great! No harm…no foul…Thanks for keepin it real GV! Props from the dirty Jerz!

Gary, first off, we met last spring at your Austin book signing. You might recall from viddler, I’m “Big-Fruit Shiraz Guy”: http://www.viddler.com/explore/imdane/videos/3/0.425/

Second, no shit, BEFORE watching today’s episode, I popped & poured the `07 ‘Dooker Violinist. When I saw you review the `08, I about fell out of my chair…Small world!

For my full note, check out Cellartracker, user-name “Bacchant”. What I got was: pale golden color; Loads of seductive fruit on the intitial attack, which hollowed out quickly through the midpalate, which then gave way to LOADS of very nice acidity from there, onward. If blind, I no doubt would’ve pegged it as a NZ Sauvignon Blanc, blended perhaps with some Chard/Semillion. Scored it 89.

Now, admittedly, I’m primarily a “devout lurker” here, but now that I’ve shared a timely comment here, show a fellow “brother-in-wine” some love and reference this note on your next show! [something missing from your instant “on the road” episode, btw…].

Finally, you really ought to review some more Zind Humbrecht wines. An entry level `06 Pino Gris of theirs absolutely rocked my world recently! Further proof-positive that world class whites exist, even outside the Mosel!

Love the show, keep up the great work!

Been watching you since last May and love the show, although the first time I’ve left a comment. You were a much needed distraction while studying for the bar exam this past summer. I’m just now starting to get into wines and definitely into trying new wines that my friends have never heard of. Thanks for the daily entertainment and wine knowledge.

great show gary. thanks for doing what you do.

i’m a huge verdejo fan. that particular molly dooker is the only one of their wines i actually enjoyed. Naia Naides is a great bottle as well. Rueda is making some great white wines.

Fun show. I was, however, transfixed by the varying levels of light – it got a little annoying. I thought for a second it was a neon light thing outside the windo, but living in LA I realized that wasn’t likely since you are in town (not a lot of flashing neon signs here) – until later in the show when you could see the television reflecting off a glass (or maybe it was the LCD off the camera?). Turn off the TV next time! Bad lighting. Entertaining show, otherwise.

    Gary,

Nice show. I just want to repeat the idea I left for the show a few day ago. I’d be cool to see some Romanian wine reviewed (like the German wines). Maybe a show in the future? Anyways, great show once again.

  • John Ferzetti

Great show. Nice bounce back. Your Chewie sounded and looked an awful lot like the oak monster. Gotta change that. Being that you are on the road with an R Wines product, it would have been a perfect time to have room service send up some bacon. Even sans bacon, today you brought the thunder.

Tasty episode. I’ve had the Mollydooker reviewed and it is one of my favorite white wines. I’ve learned more about wine and tried more new things in the last 9 months that I’ve been watching WLTV. Do I love every episode–no, but the overall experience far outweighs the occasional clunker.

Gary–thank you for pumping out the great content.

  • Knew you had a bounceback episode in you. I have missed the straight wine episodes (call me a classicist). I think the first 400 episodes the solo/guest ratio was about 85/15, now it’s closer to 50/50. I think the show would best be suited around 70/30. Would be interesting to know if this LA liquor store sees a sales bump now. Hmm….

    NQOTD….boo.

Loved the Heidi Klum impression, not so much the Chewbacca one though. 😛 Another great impromptu episode. GJ GV

  • Great show, Gary!

I loved the Scholium Naucratis Verdelho 07 – glad to here Sarah and Sparky are producing this high-acid varietal!

I’m also glad you finally got a Thackrey on! I tried the previous edition of his Pleiades and it totally rocked my palate (95pts!) – sorry to here that XVI didn’t show as well.

    Sean Thackrey Pleiades XV

Medium garnet in the glass, the wine immediately blooms into a trio of eucalyptol, Brettanomyces, and dark fruits. Underneath these primary tones lie an ever-shifting accompaniment that suggests tiramisu, charcoal, tar, manure, damp wood, blackcurrant, orange spice, herbs, roasted lamb, and grilled carrots. The bouquet seems to change constantly – hence my verbose attempt to describe my many impressions. In the mouth it is weighty, medium-bodied, with fresh acidity and the slightest touch of silky tannins. There is a touch of sugar on the mid-palate which is my only structural complaint. The gorgeous finish lasts 80 seconds.

Certain aromatic elements remind me of the 2000 Guigal Cote-Rotie La Mouline though this doesn’t have the La Mou’s elegance or balance. The syrupy flavors and oak influence remind me a little of Gerard Perse’s 2005 Clos L’Eglise (Cotes de Castillon). This wine keeps evolving in the glass – as the Brett blows off, other flavors rise to prominence in turn.

    95 points.

On a completely unrelated note, I recently organized a champagne tasting, and was thoroughly unimpressed… only to fall head-over-heels for a Taittinger the next weekend. It was the first Champagne that I’ve truly enjoyed (yay for palate expansion!)

    2nd comment EVER!

Gary, you are a total stud!
    This was a great episode!

I have a question for you!

You and your show have completely captured/inspired my interest in the wine world, HOWEVER:

As a underage individual (20 years of age) and obvious beginner into the wine world, is there anything I can do to prime, prepare, or expand my palate for the future?

Thank you for cranking out such entertaining episodes!

Gary, just wanted to let you know I really enjoy and appreciate what you do. I’ve been watching your daily episodes & Jake and Amir’s periodic episodes for quote some time now, so seeing those two worlds merged was awesome. It’s quite disheartening finding out the shockingly negative reaction by fans. I thought the episode was great though, and it gave me laughs to no end.
Thanks Gary, don’t let the negativity influence your awesomeness.

  • Great show @garyvee! Your impression of the Suxx was spot-on with mine, tasted last weekend. Especially the ‘painting your palate’ comment. Bravo!

Ive had the Violinist before and have truly enjoyed it…great white wine for the price. If only you could get white wines from chassagne-montrachet in that price range.

Gary, your talent and dedication always shines through in episodes like this, so thank you.

Yesterday though, I simply could not make it through the show. Hey, it’s your show and who the hell are we to tell you how to run WLTV? Still, my favorite guests have always been passionate and knowledgeable about wine, balanced by a healthy sense of humor, and are not full of themselves. Wait a minute, that sounds a lot like you! Coincidence? I think not. They complement you and your WLTV mission. In all honesty, I would rather watch you solo everyday and twice on Sunday than watch an episode with a guest who compromised the above.

Thanks again for all you do.

Great show Captain Thunder. My comment is this: I just read about the Thunder Cruise that is going on in a couple weeks and thought it was a fantastic idea. I am getting married next year and I think this would make a GREAT honeymoon. Is there any info on the 2010 Thunder Cruise yet?

    Nice show Gary!

I have a proposition for a show! How about a ?Global Crisis go away show?, you?ll taste (blind would be fun!) top wines from countries around the globe to show there is a lot to be proud of, at least in the wine world. My line-up would be:

Chateau Angelus 2003 ? France (I remember you loved the 2005)
Viña Cobos, Cobos Malbec 2004 ? Argentina
Viña Almaviva, Almaviva 2003 ? Chile
Mollydooker, Velvet Glove 2007 ? Australia
Luis Pato, Vinhas Velhas 2005 ? Portugal
Michele Castellani, Amarone 2004 ? Italy
    Chateau Kefraya 2001 ? Lebanon
Chandon Excellence Brut NV – Brazil

A top multi-country blind taste would be awesome.

    Best wishes,
    Mauricio Fernandes
    Brazil
