I would love to sit next to GV on a plane ride. I could talk to him for hours.

QOTD: I never drink wine on the plane. I fly early and always indulge in a bloody mary or three. There is just something about them that hits the spot – vodka mediocre, bloody mary mix canned and also mediocre. But . . . that’s all part of the charm.

GREAT Quicky!! Love that the woman next to you had no idea what you were doing! 🙂 Thanks for all you do – I agree with your score on the Vandage – 🙁 hopefully they will get something better soon!

QOTD: Bloody Mary’s – never can go wrong with vodka! I usually fly out in the morning any way so its a nice way to start your trip!

Have a safe trip! Have you picked out names for the bambino yet?

Swiss air is the shizna when it comes to wine on a plane. I believe they had their own brand of a red from australia and a white wine from france. They both rocked for airplane wines!!!!

  • Richie

    Really great idea!
In fact the best drink I have had on a plane would be apple-juice because the last time I was on a plane I wasn’t old enough to drink any wine etc.

beer is not bad.i mean, how cheap could they get.sw used to always arrive and depart on time.sometimes they have to crank the afterburners to make up the time.the last flights i was on to sacramento via phoenix on were packed like a cattle car. you used to be able to move around and seating was open. if you got in line first you got the seat you wanted. nice trip to napa, carmel and down the coast to see(bill gates, eat your heart out)hearst castle.airport in phoenix featured a wine tasting bar.you could also purchase bottles of silver oak ,etc. and carry it on the plane. bought some flagship pinot noir from domaine caneros in sonoma.the chateau is an exact copy of a louis the 14th home.you sit on the stone porch and look at the hills covered with grapes not sure whether you are in france or italy.chateau st jean in kenwood has beautiful gardens and architecture.california was really a new experience.biblical fires(which were mostly out),lesbians that looked like victoria’s secret models publicy necking, broadway quality shows in carmel in 100 seat theatures…..

  • QOTD: Gotta give it to Piedmont Punch. Remember Piedmont Airlines? It was their signature fruit punch.

    Classic – great show Gary.

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to fly business class on American Airlines to Tokyo. I cannot remember all the wines, but during our trip we were treated to some really nice wines including Piper Heidseck Champagne upon arrival on the plane.

QOTD: Amstel Light on a flight from New York to Orlando. So it goes without saying i’ve never had a very good drink (or experience for that matter) on a plane. I say the best traveling drink i’ve ever had was a bottle of Franck Pascal 1996 Champagne in a car ( I was not driving ) on the way to my dads house in north Florida big time stuff! We also had a pretty good Chinon on that trip but it’s name escapes me.

Loved the show. Fun to watch.

QOTD: Actually had a decent Chateauneuf once on a business class flight to London. Never understood why the airlines, as a profit enhancer, didn’t offer better wines by the plastic cup to the folks in coach. Probably sell a lot more of that at than Fish Eye or Vendange.

  • excellent work GV…
been lurking for years and finally decided to join in the fun.

QOTD: each time my wife and I have flown on LAN Chile when going to visit her family there. If lunch or dinner is served the wine flows gratis in coach. Last time it was the basic but reliable Undurraga Cabernet Sauvignon. Oh, and it is served in a small but actual glass, and a third pour came as freely as the first. Let’s hope it never ends. You may have to think about an adventure trip down there.

  • Thank you for doing this episode! Yes we’ve been waiting. Now you need to try some of the better wines they have in first class (no first class on SW).

Did the people around you think you were crazy when you were doing this? LOL the peanut grab was priceless, love it! Maybe the peanuts in the laptop caused your screen to break? LOL

Gary, loving the “guerrilla-like” style and flavor of these impromptu episodes, keep them going!

QOTD: Anything free when lucky enough to get bumped up to first class always tastes great from the champange they have to the mini bottles, what’s not to love? If it wasn’t for the airlines the mini bottles would probably cease to exist. And where else can some cheap Totts-like champange taste so good as it creates the attachement to how air travel use to be a real luxury and romantic in nature?

The funniest drink order reaction I ever got was when I ordered Mountain Dew and Vodka…becasue they don’t have Red Bull on the planes and that’s a soft drink in the same ballpark with color an caffeine, she thought I was crazy. LOL

  • Ian

Really enjoyed this episode. Something about those everyday/overlooked locations…

QOTD. Nothing like a good Coca Cola on an airplane. I smile like the kid in the old school Mean Joe Green commercial every time I have one.

  • GV, this is a very important lesson! When you are flying at high altitudes your taste buds become less sensitive. That’s why you’ll find many airplane meals tend to be high in fat, so there is more flavor. Similar, wines tend to be more fruity. The real test is to try that same wine back on the ground.

QOTD: I had a wonderful Pinot Noir from New Zealand aboard a British Airlines flight (in First Class no less!) about 10 years ago. It was the beginning of my strong leaning towards Pinot Noir, long before Sideways.

Hey Gary, was the flight attendant hot??? Did she cropdust you guys???

QOTD: I have vodka and tomato juice on all my flights I usually ask for an extra bottle, its seems like Skye vodka these days on the plane……

QOTD – in ’92 I was flying alone back home from a board exam in Kansas City on a nearly empty flight. I was totally dead-ass broke, and the guy across the aisle must have sensed my misery. Dude gave me a couple of frequent flyer free beer coupons on me. Not the best beverages available on flights like that one (especially back then), but it was a true lifesaver at the time.

  • The best Vino I had at 33,000 feet in the air would have to be 2004 Alto Rouge Merlot. SWISS Airlines served this onboard a flight from Zurich to Rome.

  • Finally he drinks the shit!

Plus you won’t smell too well (or taste for that matter) on a neutralizing (neuterizing?) airplane.

Best drink on a plane: G&T.
