Actually had Henriot, on Varig! Had Johnny Black on British.

  • SargieAZ

QOTD: I had a mini-handgranade can of STELLA ARTOIS years ago, before it hit the US market, FOR FREE, on some flight in Europe circa 1990s. I rocked my face off.

Bad luck with wine on planes, I have seen a few wine shops in the secured areas like in Baltimore…THAT is sweet.

  • Elron

Oh and yeah, did you finish or at least continue to drink the bottle?

Next time you roll anywhere I wanna come with ya. I can be your camera guy. I’ll even pay my own way and work for free. OK, take that back…better yet, will work for wine.

Well, I liked the concept of this show anyway except for that bad light in nmy face on the second whirl. See, you need me as a traveling camera man.

Nice to see you actually have more emails than me. But what’s your spam folder look like if that’s how many real emails you have….WOW!!! Anyway I would have Pazzzed on that wine without this episode….hahaha

QOTD: I once had a unbelievable bottle of Bordeuax in first class on my way home form Phoenix and WOW….was that unbelievable. I can’t remember the name now but because you mentioned it I wanted to share that with you. They definately made a mistake by having this one on the plane. It was way too good even for first class. And especially on Continental. I mean it wasn’t like I was on Virgin or something ya know Homey… 😉 Hey… could have been the Valium though now that I think about it…lol Just kidding…have a safe trip Homey

  • Air France is my favorite for wine, which unfortunately only applies to flights to Europe, at least from the US perspective. Anyways, here’s a quick copy/paste from a Feb. 25th post to my wine blog, covering “Wine at 30,000 Feet”

The Grand Crew | a wine blog :

I thought it?d be interesting to evaluate an ?airplane wine?, since I?ve been traveling quite a bit lately. In fact I?ll be flying again this weekend ? on Lufthansa to Munich ? to visit my best friend Paco, who?s in from Monterrey, Mexico. Contrary to what logic or snobbery may suggest, every once and a while I?ll run into some decent wines at 30,000 feet. The wine being covered in this post was provided by Air France, who I?ve consistently found to be above average when it comes to wine and food on flights. I flew Air France on my recent 10-day trip of China.

La Vieille Ferme, located in the Southern Rhone Valley, produces reds, whites and rosés. Their vines were planted at 1,000 feet above sea-level in a soil of old alluviums, flat and rounded stones, chalk marl and clay. The grapes are harvested relatively late.

So without further ado, especially since my jet lag is still lingering, let me present the goods?

    2007 La Vieille Ferme
    Appellation: Côtes du Luberon, Rhone
Blend: grenache blanc, bourboulenc, ugni blanc, roussanne
    Price: $9 SRP
Tasting Notes: Straw yellow in the glass. Aromas of apple, lemon, orange, and flowers. Fleshy apple and orange peel flavors, not too complex. In the mouth dry and medium-bodied with a creamy, silky texture and balanced acidity. 13% vol. 41,665 cases produced.
    Rating: 13/20 (WS 86)

  • Excellent! I rarely laugh out loud, but you brought it out of me for this one. I think it was the peanut crumbs showering down. You should win an Oscar for Cinematography!

QOTD: Its a tie between London Pride and Bloody Mary’s.

  • Disjointed, awkward, thin, boring … kind of like some of my ex-boyfriends. Ha.

This is AWESOME. ?The thunder … is inside.? My new motto.

QOTD: The best drink I ever had on an airplane was a vodka cranberry, the one and only time I got bumped to first class. I was just thrilled to be drinking anything at all.

  • Well, that was different. Thanks! Funny…I suggested a wine and peanuts episode a couple of shows ago. I was wondering who was consulting with who when you met with Tony?

QOTD: Best drink at an airport had to be the beer at Heathrow.

  • At the local grocery store, they have two main wines that come in the small bottles (which I like because it’s sort of a one serving kind of thing). Vendage and Cavit. Neither are that great, but I definatly agree that the Vendage is not that great. Convenient size , yes. Cavit better.

–The best wine in an airplane? not tried that many, but some kind of champagne on honeymoon–(1st class)
–best cheap single serve little bottle was Sutter Home Merlot at a Hooters. I wonder if the atmosphere affects these wines?

  • Love the live on the street stuff.

QOTD: There is only one mile high drink that really comes to mind here for me, Jack and Coke, and I will tell you why. We were on the flight back from Kuwait to Germany after my first tour in Iraq in 2003, and the Flight Attendant said our “Captain has authorised alcoholic beverages for this flight” and everyone went nuts. We hadn’t seen even a beer, much less tasted one, in almost a year. It was 2 Jack and Cokes and nappy nappy time for me, smiling ear to ear the whole way home.

  • M

too funny…I’m curious what your neighbors on the plane were saying, “dude is filming himself eat peanuts.”

    QOTD: bottled water

    QOTD:

I use to order orange juice and cranberry juice at which time I would mix them together. At 33K it hit the spot. Oh the good old days. Now it’s several bucks for a water or a buck for shitty coffee.

    That’s coach for ya!

  • david levey

    Gary,
Back in the 90’s Lufthansa (sp?) served Hermann J. Wiemer Riesling in 1st class. A very good wine, and I think, a good showing for an American reisling on a German airline.

Great show. Reminded me a bit of Dr. Lecter drinking the Phelan Segur on the plane at the end of Hannibal.

  • Gary,

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love your “improv” shows outside of your normal office. I feel like it gives a personal feel to the show, kinda like we’re right there with you in the moment. Very cool.

QOTD: Best Drink was a shot of Jack Daniels on my first flight ever on my way out to Vegas for the first time ever. Good Memories for sure. 😉

    No way!!!!!

I double dared you to do one on the plane 2 hours ago in yesterdays comments. And then you knock it out of the park!!!!! It is a shame the Oak Monster didn’t come!

QOTD – Any wine is a great wine when traveling with 3 small children as I have done recently!!!

I have not read all the comments but I am sure someone mentioned that in high altitude as in an airplane you loose 15-30% of your flavour… I would be interested it if you reviewed it on the ground.

    QQTD: Greek lager called Mythos.

Gary – Man, you cover it all. Wine from the mini-bar in a hotel room or wine on an airplane, bizarre. Just like I’d expect from the mini-bar, nothing worth any time. I’ll be glad when you get back to tasting normal wines.

QTD – I’ve had nothing memorable to drink on an airplane – usually a soda of some sorts or orange juice.

  • Leif erik Sundstrom

    QOTD: Jacquart NV Champagne

I just returned from France and was shocked that Air France served
Jacquart NV Champagne to me in economy class. A Grower Champagne, a ‘recoltant-manipulant’ in economy?! What a treat, I think I finished a bottle by myself.

It piqued my interest so I checked out the First Class options–their highlight was 2004 Lynch-Bages. I wonder how much those tickets were?

  • Oh yeah…Thanks for that show Homey…someone….I guess you know who….just reminded me I suggested you do that one time in a comment.

    I forgot
