90/100

line of the day – ‘If anybody knows who wears No 70 for the New York Jets I will give them $4,000, GO’

Phenomenal – slagging off a $70 wine, 2 yards away from the guy who donated it to the show and not batting an eyelid. You have to be impressed.

The crowd looked like a fun time – but it made for a really annoying show.

QOTD: I had a bad Gavi a while ago, disappointing since I’ve had such good luck with the region.

I really want to go next year.

QOTD: So yesterday I tried an Albarino, a varietal I had never had to expand the pal. In the wine’s defense, I didn’t know anything about the varietal, but when I drank it, it was all acid and sugar, and no real nuances presented themselves. I couldn’t pick up any distinctive flavor profiles, but the wine did grow on me after the 3rd glass.

2001 Fanti Brunello. It tasted almost entirely of wood. Wood faded after 36 hours but so did the overall punch of the wine.

That’s too bad about the wines, but thanks for making some episodes on the cruise. I guess those wines suck because so many do and you have to taste some of them sometimes. I tasted a whole flight of wines yesterday that sucked. Some were from a winery in Argentina called something like Latitude 34 and I don’t remember what the others were. One smelled like toothpaste and another was like coconut-scented sunscreen. Yuck.

  • Hey Gary

It really looked like you guys were having fun.

QOTD: my disapointing wine recently would be a terrible bottle of Bass Philip Village Pinot Noir. A strange wine that was faulty and really werid…

august briggs 2005 zinfandel.overpriced. weak finish, alcohol too apparent. according to parker’s vintage chart 2005 was a poor year for zin. 87 points, although that might be too generous.

Gary, I LOVE the dashe- think you described it to a T.

Was looking through the archive for ratings of zins and was shocked not to find the “Prisoner” by Orin Swift! It’s a zin based blend that’s HUGE over here in the East Bay Area (California)! PLEEAAASSSE feature it!!!!

    Love you!

    Too bad for the wines…

Hopefully y’all drank better stuff on the cruise.

QOTD: 2005 Marques de Marialva Barraida. I loved the 2003, but the 2005 was thin and lacked complexity and depth.

Hope you guys enjoyed the cruise!

  • The wines may have sucked, but I thought it was a good episode.

QOTD: I had an 2003 Ojai Bien Necido Syrah that was super boring. I’m just happy I didn’t pay the $40.

  • Ahh, sorry the wines did suck but what is one to do? It’s very difficult (IMHO) to choose a good Zin let alone any good CA sparkling. I feel most Zins are too over the top and hot which does not appeal to me at all.

QOTD: Actually, I toted a few high-priced wines down to the Caymans a few weeks to enjoy with some friends and I must say the ’89 Dominus was DOA. It was so dead I had to pour it down the drain. 🙁 Thank goodness I also brought a Haywood Zin and a Reignac which saved the evening.

Bummer. On all counts. Still, 99% of you’z had to be lovin’ it, and the rest of us are still jealous. As you guys ay in sports… maybe next year.

Diva is from Cliff Lede, so that’s a drag. I remember you were WAY into that Lede Cab. His wines turned out ot be good stuff, and from the specs on this wine ( free-run juice, extended tirage/ late disgorged, etc, I might guess YOUR palate is off. Imagine.. at sea, etc.)

Though Dashe is VG, and they got the uper hand as per vintage here, Titus is known by me to have two super stong points: Cab, and Zin, with excellent sourcing pedigrees, so that, to was a bad surprise.

QotD ; 1998 Chateau Musar Blanc. In all my years, given the opportunities to return, and non-judgmentally assess what’s going on with this winery, I remain in the dark. I just don’t get it. For all the zealous fanatacism and critical acclaim (much of that on an internationally palate derived scale), I keep coming up with musky, overpowering honeyed (sherry like, but not maderized), not fresh fruit. Sometimes not EVEN fruit. But then again, I’m not big honeyed flavors in wines, exceptions being in the great aged Riesling, and the greatest aged Chards.

  • Garry’s comment about paying taxes according to alcohol percent was misleading and wrong.
You pay more taxes on ALL wines OVER 14% not on a sliding scale.

  • Ouch, I could feel the pain you were going through Gary. Thanks for giving your honest opinions.

I’ve been a Dashe fan for several years, although I think they used to be a little better.

QOTD. Two weeks ago I had a 2005 Paras Vineyard, Napa Valley Syrah. It was quite the let down for its $40+ price tag. Thin, and lacking complexity, at least at that price point. It probably didn’t help that I had really high hopes for this wine.
