Ok, I’m late to the wine world, having discovered wine late in the game while living between willamette valley in oregon and walla walla in washington from 2004 to 2008. And I’m late to your show having just discoverd garyvaynerchuk.com and winelibrarytv.com in April and May of 2009. But you are resonating with me, given my newfound passion for wine and my passion for entrepreneurial pursuits. I get WAY more mentorship than an episode of The Apprentice with Donald Trump AND I get some wine knowledge to boot. My hat is off to the man known as Gary Vay * ner * chuk. I love the Mendoza line metaphor, I’m totally stealing that. It’s the perfect way to describe whether you can recommend a wine or not. Batting above the line and I can find someone that would love this wine, batting below, dump it into the sink. Very straightforward.

QOTD Part 1: No bullcrap whatsoever, the best dessert wine I’ve had this year was a port-style wine my friend found at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Fair. I was pretty flabbergasted. I think it even had Concord in it.

QOTD: Best dessert wine I’ve had this year was a Canadian Vidal/Ortega icewine from Gaspereau Vineyards in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. GREAT acidity (routinely double the acidity levels that you get in other places like Ontario, for example), balanced perfectly with the sweetness. Delicious and still refreshing…

Wow, almost dropped my wine glass at the Cal Ripken Jr. and steroids call. Nice save though. I’m with Lauren, let’s link up Mott as a guest! That would crush [it].

A few notes on the episode:
Very apropos to reference the Mendoza Line during a review of a Washington state wine, since George Brett coined the term during an interview in 1980 when he referenced Mario Mendoza (who had hit .198 in over 400 ABs with the 1979 Seattle Mariners).
“Mt. Baker”?!? Nowhere near Yakima (though I can see Baker from Vancouver).
Then you kept the baseball references going on wine #2 with the Ripken stuff.
Unfortunately, wine #3 struck out looking.

No dessert wines in ’09. Mott rocks!!!

Had recently an 05 cluster select late harvest Riesling from Navarro Vineyards in Anderson Valley- lazerlike precision of peach and apricot flavors with supporting acidity that cuts like a razor blade. Focused fruit flavor!!!! Yum!

Glad you liked the JC Cellars bottle — when I pour it for people in the tasting room I think it’s more like liquid honey and would be delicious over vanilla ice cream and/or pound cake. It’s only 8% alcohol too, BTW, but something like 16.5% RS.

QOTD: I don’t really drink much dessert wine, so I guess I’ll just say that JC’s is my fave.

P.S. It’s called Cuvee Alexandra after Jeff Cohn’s wife! 😉
