His pino is definitely bigger than mine. Fantastic show. Mr. Shuster and his stories evolved before my eyes. QOTD: Wishful thinking at best. Gary you were perfect host.

I think Daniel is the same guy that’s in the Dos Equis commercials, sans the hat. You know, “The Most Interesting Man in The World”. Stay thirsty!

    Great show.

    Gary,

Winemakers don’t need your help in raising prices!! Seriously, I understand what you were getting at in terms of getting a wines reputation and pedigree appreciated pricing-wise. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. But as we’ve seen in Bordeaux/Burgundy the downside of hype-pricing puts some wines completely out of reach for mere mortals. Good show, finally someone who can out talk you! Tons of knowledge and experience, I’d love to talk to him for hours.

QOTD: I haven’t tried and I don’t think you can tell the difference in every instance as there are women making wines in fantastically varied styles.

Love the guest. What a charming guy. Could listen to him for hours–we almost did. Another 2-parter!!

QOTD: Probably not. Just a bunch of random guesses. However women usually have a keener sense of smell and taste than men.

    That was just plain fun!

QOTD: Great question! No. And if I were to have the armangnac (sp?) soaked peach with crumbled gorgonzola and the late harvest Riesling brought to me in the a.m. I would not care one way or the other! 😉
(My husband enjoyed yesterday’s episode, and I am going to make certain he watches today’s!)

Oh, man! I can listen to this guy all day long! This may have been the best guest episode “series”, yet! Thanks Daniel and Gary!

QOTD: Interesting! I’ve never tried that. I wouldn’t think you’d be able to tell, but I can understand what you’re saying. Makes me want to try a blind tasting test on this. Gary, you need to do this on a show!

The BEST guest ever. Knowledge, history, and experience. Add a little bit of Rock ‘n Roll and a touch of the ladys man on armagnac and its balanced like a wine made by a woman!!! Invite him back any time. I will look for his wines also, since it sounds like he has single handedly shaped the wine industry from behind the scenes. References to Joe Hietz, The Carpenter, The Stones and the Doors to name a few. THE BEST EVER!

QOTD- I haven’t tried to distinguish the sex of the winemakers, but I have several wines made by woman, and they ARE well balanced. Full flavored but not too bold. I will continue my observations & watch for distinctions between male and female winemakers.

Great two-part show. We learned a lot about Daniel Schuster and the wine world in general. Thanks!

QOTD: Nope! Guess we’ll have to drink more wine, then!

  • GV:

You so have to tape an episode with Daniel at his place in NZ when you go there.

QOTD: I’ve never tried to tell the difference. Maybe that’ll be the twist at the next tasting party.

This guest was awesome. Such a legend and so knowledgable. I would luv for you to come visit the store i work at. its table and vine in west springfield, MA. I thought we were the biggest package store on the east coast untill i started watching you. I literally tell my customers about you all the time now…pleese get back to me if at all possible…

Gotta watch these two again. Bring Daniel back Gary.

Gary, this was great. Did you take a benzo before hand? Either way, your style was mello and well-good with this guest.

    QOTD: Bet on it.

  • Brilliant show, what a classy and unpretentious guy. I have new respect for New Zealand (taken down a couple pegs by Flight of the Conchords). I hope I have stories half as cool as his when I get to be his age.

QOTD: I’ve never tried it but sometimes there’s something about a wine that makes more sense to me when I find out the winemaker was a woman. I’m not quite sure what.

I agree with brian j, Daniel obviously lives vicariously through himself.

QOTD: I’d like to see a blind tasting on the show in the future and see if Gary can guess the gender of the wine maker.

Daniel was a really great geust. This episode and the last were some of the most enjoyable ever.

QOTD: Never really thought about it, but I may start paying attention to it. The idea of being able to tell if the winemaker is male or female reminds me of a professor I had in architecture school who could tell if drawings were done by a male or female.

Again, Daniel is a gem! Love him and can’t wait to give the Riesling a try. Good question! I’ll start to actually pay attention!

Fun pair of episodes. Daniel for some reason always makes me think of the XX “Most Interesting Man in the World” commercials 🙂

QOTD: I don’t take enough or with enough finess to tell but I would think that in the big picture (rather than on a wine by wine basis) you can find stylistic variances.

I think this was the first episode where I didn’t blink once: Daniel is the most enthralling guest you’ve ever had on the show. He has done more in his life than 20 men will even accomplish together and he is incredibly entertaining to listen to. I hope you can have him back on soon.

QOTD: I have never tried it, but now will have to make a conscious effort to do so.

Congratulations in advance on the Vayner-baby, he/she should be coming this weekend and cannot wait to see what the older and wiser Gary V has to say about parenthood when we see you again.
