line of the day – ‘Big blackberry flavours exploding on my nose like a grenade’

Barnstorming episode featuring GV at his best. When he goes on about the nuances of different vintages his knowldege is scary. The visible wince when trying the last wine is classic Gary, and sticking the wooden box on his chair as an Oak Monster substitute made me laugh. A classic.

Yay! Episode 700! I can’t believe I’ve watched over 500 of these! Interesting show, much more of the format that I’ve always liked. I wonder if the ’06 French vintage is going to be like what you were saying about the ’95 Napa vintage, where it’ll show better over the long period even though it’s likely to be overshadowed by all the hooplah of the ’05 vintage.

congrats, another awesome vid! and they keep getting better.
qotd: the kosher wine tasting with sasha, hands down!

  • Congrats on 700 – The Simpsons are only to 441 according to wikipedia, and they are the longest running… considering you provide more average content than a “30-minute” sitcom, I think you fall in the same category. Media consumption is changing!

QOTD: Episode 634 – not the guest but the wine, I’m going to pop one bottle of the Cornas every year for the next 11 years… the first was nice, and they will only get better!

    Gary,
Great show and I am sure I will be watching episode 1000. Since I have not been watching that long I will say the episode with Daniel Shulster is my favorite so far.

    Great episode!!

QOTD: #148..It was pretty hysterical watching you eat all sorts of things (especially dirt) and watching your reactions!

I’m still looking for an episode with Chilean wine…Great QPR, especially in economic times like these! Or what about a Chilean/Portuguese QPR faceoff??

Congrats on reaching the 700th episode…. Hope to congratulate you when you make it to 1000! 🙂

QOTD : my most memorable episode was the one with Robert Camuto in, 633, as it lead me to reading his book which I enjoyed so much and gave to other people who also enjoyed reading it. Every episode has been worth watching though!

I can’t believe I made it through 600+ episodes but am sure Gary would agree that it only got interesting after “VAY-NER-CHUK!”… OG’s know what I’m talking about. Keep it up Gary. Can’t wait until you pass the buck to Misha.

    QOTD: 125.

I question the validity of the 700 claim? What about the episode presented by Sir Garry V (my favourite episode QOTD). That episode don?t count ?cos you weren?t there! I say bring back the erudite and cultured Sir Garry to restore some dignity to the proceedings.

Great that you mentioned the heavy hitters on the forum, BUT What about the Lurkers, The Rookies and the Newbies??? Do they just get ignored ? HUH!!!

Happy 700 Gary! Really enjoyed the show! Just you, doing what you do best, perfect.

QOTD: 148, without a doubt I have used that episode more than any other to get more of my friends interested in watching WLTV and drinking wine more seriously in general.

    Thank for everything you do!

can’t remember the number show, however it was a Robert Sinsky Merlot. You started with the sniffy sniff of course and said it smelled like a old sweater you had in your closet, I really thought you were going to dislike it. Then you drank it and loved it, like a classic Bordeaux you said. It was a I belive a $11.00 bottle, I bought a case and you nailed it, it was very good!!!! Keep up the awesome work!!! Love the show!

  • Chris The Cop

WTF no Chris the Cop shout out????????? I dig all the wine knowledge you throw out but I’m upset about the recent dis on this episode.

1st of all – thx for all the FREE content and entertainment man. 700 shows!!!

it was very sweet of you to shout out to your long-time forum posters. you should be proud of the fact that some very positive friendships have been made from what you created – talk about legacy!

loved this show and the peek behind the GV curtain as to wines and vintages that hold significance for you and your journey – bravo.

QotD: it was #122 that hooked me. i had watched a month or so before then but the serious nature of that show and those Cali bottles got me more into your scene. began lurking the forum then and joined a month or two later. see you @ the 1000 soiree!!!

QOTD: #572 you reviewed my Aunt and Uncle’s wine from Lookout Ridge for Wine for Wheels and ever since then, I’ve been a devoted fan. I check in on winelibrarytv.com multiple times a day (teetering towards obsessive) now and am constantly jotting down wines to try. You’ve changed the way I look, taste, reflect, and respect wine all for the better by making it approachable and fun. Thanks, Gary. Love all that you do!

Gary – Congrats on #700. I am a long time “lurker” and have been a customer of your store and a watcher of WLTV since #1. It has been great to watch you and the show evolve since the beginning.

QOTD: I have gone back through and can’t find it, but there was and episode when you made a statement that if anyone had ordered a wine from the store they should send it back and another were you absolutely panned a big name california winery (I think they may have sent you the wines) these showed me that this wasn’t about selling wines from the store for you but something bigger. I always love the ones when your Dad is on, I find myself LMAO it is great to see the love and fun you to have together.

QOTD. I loved the epic #200 and have watched it a number of times since. But I guess it helped that you had had the wines before. Jancis was awesome too.

    Keep it up, GV!

QOTD: That one’s easy: my first episode. I don’t remember the number (somewhere in the 300’s), I don’t remember the wine but I sure do remember the host. As many I was shocked by this loud mouthed gay shout in a couch, but boy-o-boy am I happy I stayed around!

Happy 700 Gary! I really hope you’ll hit the 1000 mark, and beyond.

Congrats on number 700 GV!!! These past few years have been great and we really do appreciate all you put into the show.

I was also a little surprised to hear you “adore me” but I assume it was meant in a brotherly sort of way………..NTTAWT 🙂

    Gary –

    Congratulations on #700.

A few episodes ago you asked for comments on anything (I’m running a few episodes behind…) One thing that I’ve been thinking about for a while is this: I think that you do an awesome job with the education end of things, and alongside your engaging personality, this makes for a fantastic show. That said, I think there is one area where you could strengthen the education, and that is in describing what you expect something should smell and taste like before you drink it. You have done this on your tv appearances, but not so much on the show. Without this, you don’t have a context for evaluating a wine against its place. If terroir matters to you (and I liked the QOTD where a guest asked if it should), then I think that you should add to your initial description of the wine (before the sniff and taste) what you expect from X varietal from Y region. Then, when you are sniffing and tasting, you can compare what you find against a standard – and not necessarily to say that and deviation from that standard is bad, but just to say, for example, that a wine has more red fruit than you would expect from a certain region. Then you can explain why that might be – vintage, time of harvest, techniques of the wine maker, etc. For me – a professional educator myself – that would take the education part of the show to the next level. As it is, I sometimes find that the sniffing and tasting can be just about how many aromas and flavors you can find, and not about analyzing them at all. For me it is more interesting to be less specific in the naming of the flavors (“red fruit” vs. “baby strawberry”) if you can offer more analysis of why it might be that way.

PS – A story: One of the first wines I bought on your recommendation was the 2004 Noblaie Chiens-Chiens Chinon. I had just discovered the show (episode 200!) and was excited to try it. I bought 4 bottles – and the first bottle was just plain awful. My wife called it acetone. I was so sad – I figured our palates were in completely different places. So, I put the wine away and just found it again recently, 18 months later. Opened the second one a couple of nights ago and – wow! – it was absolutely stunning. One of the best wines I’ve had. Don’t know if the first bottle was bad (other comments in the notes/forum said similarly bad things) or if it just needed time. Can’t wait to have the remaining two bottles.

Btw, QOTD my favorite episode was 182 in the cold because I was out in that mess that day as well.
