line of the day – ‘Big blackberry flavours exploding on my nose like a grenade’

Barnstorming episode featuring GV at his best. When he goes on about the nuances of different vintages his knowldege is scary. The visible wince when trying the last wine is classic Gary, and sticking the wooden box on his chair as an Oak Monster substitute made me laugh. A classic.

    QOTD:
On a wine nerdy level, the ampelos episode, with the blending and those kooky characters was awesome. Also, the blending episode on one of your bordeaux trips was great, although a little quiet and could have used some subtitles.
On a hilarious note, check out episode #439. A sangiovese show. Both wines sucked but GV was hilarious. At the end, he mixed the two together and made a better wine than either of the two individually. But the episode was so funny, I laughed out loud!

  • Good shout out to the forum greats, I’ll try not to take it too personally that the overseas contingent (and myself) were in absentia, at least OttawaB can fly the Commonwealth Flag!

Congrats on reachine 700, who would have thought it all those years ago?

QOTD – Episode 115, my first ever episode, the one that dragged me into the depravity!

loved the show as always…Congrats on 700 and thanks for continuing it for so long.

QOTD: My favorite episode was the one you did on Aglianico (i think it was episode 267). I was in Italy at the time for culinary school and bought a bottle of Aglianico del Vulture on a field trip the night before I watched my first WLTV episode. I shared the wine with a friend from class and the wine “blew our face off”. Somehow stumbled on your show and saw the episode on Aglianico and was happy to see that you loved the wine as well. I still love the wine immensely, and it always brings back great memories of the best summer in my life. At the time my friend and I were ballers on a budget and the Aglianico satisfied our need for the big Barolo’s and Brunello’s that we craved but couldn’t always afford. Thanks for making the memory that much sweeter by allowing me to continue to relive it whenever I watch that old episode.

P.S. still waiting on a Tintilia episode…that was the wine that changed the game for me.

Congrats on the 700 Gary; you will get to 1000 no problem! QOTD: my fav episodes are probably episode 600 with the Mott in full effect, Henrik Shoma kicking it German style, How does the weather affect wine? and of course the man Sasha in da house! Keep em up and yes keep em traditional at most times please. We need another Riesling show by the way.

Hi Gary, Congrats on your #700 Episode. I wanted to thank you all of your hard work, I really enjoy your shows.

QOTD: My memorable epi. would be my first one #645. I wish I could of find your shows sooner but I really enjoy your old shows too, when there is no new show I go to archive and watch the old one.
I may add that I don’t drink wine or any alcohol beverage but I really like the shows.

You are the man!!!, keep up the good work m/

Congratulations on reaching this latest milestone, Gary. You bring joy.

QQTD: Aside from watching you eat dirt, my favorite episodes continue to be your blind tastings. Thanks to you and that format, I have discovered some incredible wines that I never would have found otherwise, like Rocca Family Vineyards cabernet, Amayna pinor noir (from Chile!), and (my current fav) Sojourn pinot noir. Keep our palates expanding in the shows to come!

QOTD: #148 … i liked that you went back to the basics…the foundation of wine appreciation…the ability to identify tastes…

by the way…the Lamborghini Campoleone vino got me really hoping you do an umbrian or umbrian/marchigiano/tuscan (central italian) wine episode soon…please please please!!

  • QOTD: Most memorable episode?the one where you had AJ on to try his first wines. Great “Intro to wine tasting” episode with an awesome list of bottles to get people started, hone their palette and grow their vocabulary.

first off you are right on point with the idea behind this episode, it’s nice to change it up once in awhile but the classic wltv format that has gotten us this far is still the best and i’m glad you did this milestone episode this way. looking back was also a good call, a got a little nostalgic when you mentioned the us 1 flea market, i grew up in south brunswick. and even though the harrison cab didn’t have a great showing, that doesn’t take away from the episode, we haven’t seen the oak monster in awhile and he’s seemed pretty benign lately, but having him steal the thunder saddle for a moment was an important reminder. the retrospect was a good lesson in ageability of wine, it seems like #1 and #3 were past their prime whereas #2 still has a way to go.

qotd – 498, sancerre and oysters, not sure exactly why this one sticks out to me, perhaps because i love sancerre, equally likely because i love oysters, or maybe because finding a perfect food and wine pairing is one of the most magical experiences in the world, or perhaps because i probably watched it more than any other episode trying to find that one sancerre you raved about

p.s. i hope 300 more is just the beginning

Congrats on 700! Seems like we just hit 600 not that long ago.

QOTD: The most memorable show that comes to mind is the sparkling show you did last winter outside in the snow. Awesome episode! Ever since moving to southern california I haven’t seen snow like that!

Why can’t I find some of the episodes mentioned in these comments. The search doesn’t work very well by numbers. I’ve been all through the archives and there are still many I can’t find.

QOTD: Actually, as I recall, it was just this past fall or winter. There you are, sitting out in the crappy weather on the store’s sidewalk. Cold and windy as it could be…….might even had been snowing.
But there’s Gary, miserable you, sitting out there, tasting wines for us.
    What a hoot.
    Thank you.

What does everyone think about the inherent conflict of interest in Gary reviewing wines that he sells? I think it’s kind of suspect.
