line of the day – ‘Big blackberry flavours exploding on my nose like a grenade’

Barnstorming episode featuring GV at his best. When he goes on about the nuances of different vintages his knowldege is scary. The visible wince when trying the last wine is classic Gary, and sticking the wooden box on his chair as an Oak Monster substitute made me laugh. A classic.

Thanks for the shout-out, GV; I appreciate it.

QOTD — even thought you diss’d the wines, the Yadkin Valley show (I promise you, they do produce better; but also some worse) and #619, the Eagle rock show. I have a bottle of the cab, letting it get some age, and of the Riesling-Catawba dessert wine, which will hopefully go over the holidays this year

Fantastic episode Gary! I liked how you kept down to earth even though it was episode 700.
QOTD: 1. Episode 605 with Hendrik Thoma because it was my first episode I watched
    2. The two-part episode 629/629 with Nicolas Joly because he was my favorite guest by far and they also were my favorite episodes. The man is a genius.

Q: Episode 36, the first one where I was actually able to try all the wines.

  • Zube

Was that $33.99 or $3399.00 on the ’88?

    QOTD – #655 – when I realized that you were a bro’

    Congrats on 700!!

Great show. It was fun to watch the oak taking over…

    QOTD: The Nicolas Joly-episode

I am so sick of you not taking a stand on the wines that you review that I don’t know if I can keep watching 🙂

QOTD: 500, Because I was there and got to meet you. Thanks, again, for all you do.

Congrats on show No. 700! I couldn’t agree more with you about the 1994 Harrison regarding the oak. I was already slowing down on my purchases of California cabs by the 1994 vintage because of the rampant over-oaking going on in California. I bought a handful of 1995 cabs, and even less of the 1997 vintage. Then I quit “cold turkey.” To be fair, I had 650 bottles of California cab in my cellar at the time, and didn’t need any more…but the real reason I quit was the oak. I moved on to more Burgundies and into Italian wines, both of which I am still collecting. Neither of these had much of a oak problem then, nor today. I still have a few 1994 and 1995 cabs from the best producers of the time, but am trying to get them consumed. They all are reaching the end of their life. Most of the ones I have left are not nearly as oaky as the Harrison. I gave the the others away to charitable wine auctions, where they were bought by people that like the Oak Monster.

I have numerous Italian wines from 1997, mostly Barolos and Barbarescos, but including a number of top Chiantis and “Super Tuscans”, some of which such as Felsina Fontolloro, which also contains a good amount of Sangiovese. These are all drinking very well.

All my Vosne-Romanees from the 1988 era seem to have lost their fruit and now emphasize their tannic balance. I am working hard to get them drunk up. I try to drink them with grilled meats.

Congratulations on 700; all were enjoyable to watch and I was able to learn something from each one!!
QOTD: The recent episode with you and Sasha tasting Kosher wines and watching him fill up on the food before that evening’s Sedar. Also, the one with you, Bobby and Brandon doing more reminiscing than tasting their namesake wines. The theme to these episodes is FAMILY.

Congrats on 700, Gary. I can’t wait to see what you have planned for ep. 1000 🙂

QOTD: Hands down favorite episode is ep. 160. The playoff beard was still in tact, you went on a huge rant about getting flack for your tasting glass, and rocked it super hard with the simpsons plastic cup. It’s the only episode that’s permanently on my iPod. Interestingly enough, the first ever WLTV episode I watched was number 151 back in december of ’06 where you tasted a whole bunch of champagnes and announced the playoff beard. I thought “who is this crazy guy ranting on about the jets while spitting out Krug Grand Cuvee?”. I was hooked, and have been watching ever since.

Congrats buddy! Its been a great run, now lets keep it going!

QOTD: My favorite episode is the one I am looking forward to watching tomorrow (or the one with Charles Smith from K Winery)!

    RIP IT!

Great Episode, I appreciate the old format as well. I also liked how this particular episode was educational about how wines develop as they age.

    Anyway, congrats on 700.

  • Don’t remember the number but the one you did outdoors in the snowstorm and I agree 662 and 663 on the cruise were very memorable for me. Bit disappointed that you only acknowledged the people on the forum. I quit using the forum do to the discord a long time ago.
I do remember so many of the cabernets from 1992-recently from CA that are nothing but oak and huge prices to boot.

    Gary –

Congratulations on reaching 700 episodes!! Day in and day out, you bring the thunder to the world of wine. Watching your shows is always one of the best parts of my day, and if you keep making them I’ll keep watching and learning.

I am especially thankful that you have encouraged us to try new wines. In the year that I have been watching [and getting caught up on previous episodes], I have tried many wines that I would never have heard of if it were not for your show, such as touriga nacional, monestrell, tempranillo, grenache, and verdejo. A few days ago, for instance, I had my first Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and it was awesome. For your encouragement to expand my wine-drinking palate, I am especially indebted to you, and I thank you sincerely.

QOTD: Episode #148 for pure fun.

  • 700 is a good number – goin back to the roots. That’s what the show is all about.

QOTD: Don’t know what number but I think it was great when you got on that rant and did the whole garyissorry thing. Will always remember that. Here’s to you guys, mb

Thank you Gary for expanding my palate for 700 episodes. Keep doing this amazing job, you’re sensational.

QOTD: 271 because this is the day I started my WLTV addiction!

  • My favourite one was with Daniel Schuster the NZ wine guy, his stories and one liners were great 😀

I think you should do an episode 700.1 and select a different wine at the end.

The “Will It Blend” videos are awesome.

It would be great having the 2 guys on you mentioned at the beginning, seeing more of the vayniacs.
