lines of the day – ‘There’s a little bit of stinkiness going on, like a pig farted on a farm’. and ‘a lot of guys are wearing eyeliner now, Mott’s been rocking it’

Chilean Cab bit of a boring category for me but GV entertaining as usual.

I enjoy the change in setting for the episode…it was nice to add to the setting which is Wine Library.

QOTD: Wifey wears Estee Lauder. Hubby wears a smile.

My wife and I visited Santiago, Chile last year on our way to Argentina. Awesome beer drinking city, so you really need to do your homework and go beyond the city for wine tasting venues. Carmenere is the signature Chilean wine varietal. I highly suggest that while in Chile, taking a short 45 minute flight to Mendoza, Argentina!…rent a car and check out some wonderful vineyards. Some will serve you parrillada or mixed grill for lunch. 5 hours later after eating and drinking, you’ll realize why the the Argentine’s eat dinner at 11pm. We enjoyed our South American tour very much. I’m certain you will love Chile… just don’t miss out on their next door neighbor! That’s where the real deal is happening! 🙂

I agree with you on the Montes.
I think some of their wines come through as a value ‘play’ for the broad consumer market. we sold a truckload of the stuff, especially their sauv blanc, at the store i used to work at. in fact that was our most popular sauv blanc ahead of the new zealand efforts.
when i started out drinking wine i loved the oak. now it stands out as something that just shouldn’t be there so much. it is so overbearing and yes, living in australia i’ve sifted through my fair share of oak monsters. that being said, i think australia sometimes gets maligned for this by you and i’m not sure your opinion truly reflects the great wineries we have here that don’t do this. i’m talking in regions like the yarra valley, tasmania, hunter valley, mornington peninsula etc. – all great examples of cool climate winemaking that relies on the nuances of the terroir and unique climate. that being said, sure, go to barossa, coonawarra and some of these regions and oak is dominant. but i’m pretty sure this is the state of the wine industry worldwide, not just australia. perhaps these great regions and wineries i’m talking about are not present in the international market. i know it’s all about the penfolds, which is disappointing as an australian because we do better than that.

sadly i don’t wear any makeup, how about you gary?

Well I am getting pretty gray, I have to admit I have thought of doing the jet black Ronald Reagan thing but so far I remain a is.

Going to see if I can track down the Unico. The mention of your trip to Chile made me wonder what folks in Chile drink in terms of brands and varietals. So often these kinds of things have one set that is for outside sales and a whole other ecosystem locally. It was one of the things I noticed with coffee in Costa Rica.

QOTD: As a guy, unless I am on stage I don’t wear any.

QOTD: None. Never been an actor, or I would have all the time, I’m sure. The only time is I tried some red lipstick once to go with a vampire Halloween costume but couldn’t stand it.

THANK YOU for mentioning that Chile’s biggest potential is with the cooler, higher-acid varietals (Pinot Noir, S. Blanc, even Chardonnay) that are being grown more and more in the coastal appelations such as San Antonio, Leyda Valley, Casablanca Valley, etc.

QOTD: Ummm I guess if I had to choose… It would be Maybelline, because I’d want people to wonder “…Maybe he’s born with it.”

  • Craig

Gary!! My man, breaking out the classic WWF references. Quite epic. Nikolai Volkov and the Iron Sheik, vs blackberry and mulberry. Awesome tie-in. I was expecting you to say the Oak Monster punched them all out and ran off with the title belt, but running off with our chicks is a far graver offense.

Your duty, should you choose to accept it, is to track down a Rowdy Roddy Piper (sometime ally of the Sheik and Nik) figurine (or a wrestler of equal legend) and have it on prominent display for the next show. Evil-Lynn’s not gonna cut it this time.

As Providence would have it, I will be in NYC hanging out with my best friend during the NYC Wine and Food festival. I’ve already got tickets to one event, and I’m considering getting tickets to your show. Can you put up a persuasive word or two to convince me to drop the hefty weight in bones for your show? Or maybe you’ll be at your store during that weekend? A dude’s gotta save bones wherever he can, ya know?

    cheers,

    Craig

I tried some Zany Zin after it had been open for about a week. It smelled a little like a pig fart, or maybe a sheep buttttt.

Love the Gene Simmons analogy. I think I’ll start using it to explain the oak monster to my overly wood-obsessed Cali Chardonnay/Cab drinking family.

QOTD: Don’t wear too much makeup seeing as how I’m a dude. Too much makeup on women is no good, though. Makes it look like they’re trying too hard.

weird to see a respected wine in South America get an average score… that’s how palates work, and that’s why I love the show. Montes Alpha in Brazil is in the 40-45 dollars range, and it’s got some great reviews overall. Waiting on a new show about argentina malbecs!

QOTD – not wearing any makeup, despite my girlfriend being a beauty professional ;]

    cheers from BRZ!
