Great episode; most notable for the worst wine story ever (told by Bryce) and a blossoming bromance between the old and the new. Well worth watching

  • I’m crying right now. You exceptional gentlemen gave an academy award performance and you weren’t acting. Maybe the transparency that was reflected between you shined like nothing else could. Wow!

best wine I’ve ever had was the 2009 Fuzion I polished off, while watching the incredible stories and magnificent ideas that were presented by you two wonderful spirits

emotion sings more charismatically than taste

Thank you so much Gary & Brice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vayniacs!! Long time follower, first time commenter…I am a restaurant manager at Cafe Bionda, a fine dining Italian restaurant in the South Loop of Chicago. I have made an effort to carry the Emeritus RRV for the past three years. It is my number one selling bottle of Pinot (among Adelsheim, Navarro, Dusky Goose, Orogeny, etc.) soely because I push it on the floor and get people coming back for more the following week. I truly do enjoy it and would love to be able to get my hands on a six pack of the single vineyard. It’s worth the search.

The best wine I’ve ever had actually was recently…it was the SUPER DUPER YOUNG, but fantastic 2004 Le Pin. After that would be the ’82 Mouton followed closely by the ’02 Hillside Select and ’03 Alban Reva Syrah

QOTD — 1918 Château Malartic-Lagravière — an 88 pt wine what fell apart after two hours, but served New Year’s Eve, 1999 to my then new girl friend, now wife for 9 years, the first meal I cooked for her

    Awesome show!

    Great guest!

Brice is a story teller, maybe because of his age (hi, hi), but he is fun to listen to. Gary was quite attentive for the better part of the show, as was I.

Wine is more than a beverage. I tastes best when shared in the best circumstances. The “soul” shines bright when then ambience is right.

    Rock on!

QOTD: My best bottle of wine was a Washinton State Merlot while fishing with some friends this summer. My worst bottle of wine was a Penot that set me back $50+ that my friend loved, but I thoght was just okay. Boy was that a wired dinner.

COMMENT: Whats wrong with making a value wine? I would buy 4 bottles at $100, but question buying one at $50 based on opinion of others alone. I believe people will purchase more wine based on value than hype.

  • Ben

Fantastic episode, I can’t see how people bag the eps with guests when you get gems like this!

Awesome work by both of you, really enjoyed it.

WOW! Just when I think a the guests can’t get any better, you hit another home run!!

Brice is awesome, and his personality and enthusiasm for making great wine shows…

Now on your mailing list, Brice…

And to echo Gary, Thank YOU for your Service to our country… that dedication and sacrifice, along with your entrepreneurial spirit, is what makes this Country GREAT!

QOTD: A 1993 Chateau La Pointe. Picked it up by chance from the local Trader Joe’s on a whim… Being new to the wine scene, I had never had a French wine… drank with my Father-In-Law during Xmas of 97… not the greatest wine, but made even better by the company and season involved as he was the person who got me into wine… Went and visited the Chateau in 2001 after many months of negotiating with the Owner’s Mother (we MAKE wine, we don’t have time to TASTE it)… again, not the best like many 1st growths in the region, but it’s been my favorite Pomerol ever since…

Brice, Thank You for being a great American.

    QOTD:
By the way the best QOTD ever.

The best bottle of wine was with my wife in 1998.

I had just started getting into wine and had planned a visit to the Naoa.Sonoma Valley’s on the back half of a business trip to LA. One night we found a wonderful restaurant for dinner and asked the waiter to recommend a wine to have with our dinner. He recommended a bottle of 1996 Chateau St.Jean Chardonnay, which I had not heard of before.
I’ll never forget it. Needless to say we loved the wine and we added a unplanned stop to the Sonoma Valley. Out of the 20+ wineries we visited that weekend, the St.Jean visit was the best. The wines were absolutely fantastic, the prices were unbelievable, the old house tasting room vs the new layout was overwhelming and the hosts were memorable.

Loved the reference from Brice regarding selling his grapes to St.Jean in the 80’s.

GV ,Thanks for sharing and show casing the story of Brice,
a great american with a great spirit.

    I’m on the list.

  • What a cool dude! No sniffy sniff today Gary? Im gonna have to disagree on the fact that the human factor is the most important thing in producing good wine. The human factor is the only thing that you CAN change in wine production. For me, and what Ive learned from wine producers in Italy, especially Juri Fiore, is that the climate and soil are THE most important. (Ok you can add some stuff to the soil and break up the ground a bit, but you cant change the physical composition). Basically, these are the 2 elements you CANT change and ultimately determine the quality of the fruit produced. It is up to the wine maker not to screw up the rest. Take for example the recent episode with Kanzler Pinot Noir. They sell their fruit to Kosta Browne and both of them produce exceptional wines from different wine makers…

QOTD: 1986 Lafite Rotschild:Not my favorite(close to) but definitely the best! It was Christmas day with my family, friends and good food. It was the event that made the wine unforgettable not the wine. There is nothing better than sharing wines with the people you love the most!

Brice reminds me of my father-in-law; awesome, passionate about what they create, and can make anyone feel comfortable.

QOTD – Silverado wine. My father-in-law is living in the San Francisco Bay area for business so my wife and I went out to visit her parents. They have become hard core into wine and they took us to Napa on our first visit and told how it was beautiful and the wine is amazing. The first place we visit is Darioush, and I only liked one wine and it was an $85 bottle, and my wife and I thought the winery fit better at Disney Land and were wondering what her parents had taken us to. The next place we went to was Silverado which had a simple tasting room with a patio overlooking the hills and vineyards while serving very good wine, many half the price of Darioush. Plus, they had merlot filled chocolate balls that we still crave to this day.I bacame hooked on wine that day and every time I taste a new wine I wonder if my wife would like it and if my in-laws would like it and if I think yes, I make sure to share it with them.

The best bottle of wine We (my fiance and I) ever had was a bottle of Moet Champagne. At the end of a cross-Canada, 31-day, 4500 km cycling fundraiser (raising over $25,000 for SickKids in 6 Months), I proposed at the Empress Fairmont in Victoria, BC in the Rose Garden one year ago today (August 1st, 2008). I proposed in Polish (Marta’s native tongue), just before the stroke of midnight. Awaiting us back in our suite was the Moet on ice 🙂
After a dance in the rose garden (with only the music in our heads, as well as a traditional Irish lullaby I sang), we shared the bottle to a toast to the rest of our lives together!

Gary a top 5 show for sure!
Brice- my greatest bottle was a 97 Pian Delle Vigne. My wife and I were in a great little place in Florence and I asked our som to bring me his best brunello and this is what I received. I was so struck by the wine that I pushed my porchini risotto to the side, for a while, enjoyed the wine and ordered another. When we returned to the states no one had any available but a year later a case went up for bid at auction. Yes it was “priceless”- and every year when my wife and I celebrate our anniversary we open another bottle and I make porchini risotto. Thanks Scott

How timely! I had Emeritus at a restaurant in Washington DC a few weeks ago, loved it, and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t find it at a store (online or otherwise). Now I know…That’s why I love your show…I always learn something.

Gary, Brice was THE best guest EVER! No one has ever been able to outshine your personality, but this guy comes real close, in MHO! Passion, charm & integrity; the “real deal”! (sounds like someone we all know)!

QOTD: A glass of California Chardonnay, with my wife, at the kitchen table, to celebrate her return home from the hospital after her battle with breast cancer. Chardonnay is her favorite & probably my least favorite varietal…but that was the best damn glass of wine I’ve ever drank.

    Gary,

Brice…The best guest to date. So real and full of “charm” That I watched it a second time. Why? Not without a struggle. The path of most resitance. We should all walk it more and to be so humble through it!!

QOTD: Ben Marco Espessivo 2006. 10 bottles, 2 days, one long story.

    PS- Don’t forget episode 737, it’s a comming!!
