Great episode; most notable for the worst wine story ever (told by Bryce) and a blossoming bromance between the old and the new. Well worth watching

Major pass on this guy. Keep it real Gary, you would of bagged that first wine for $50 bones. You could tell you were not overly excited about these wines. Boring.

Most recently a couple friends and I were drinking some decent wine and went to the fancy Italian restaurant down the street. I checked their wine list online and determined we could save some serious dough if I brought some of my favorite wines. I brought Rafanelli Cab and a Ridge Cotes de blend. We dined outside and the Rafanelli blew us all away with the color and fruity goodness. One buddy preferred the Ridge so that left more cab for me. Made even more memorable by the other friend puking purple stuff in my flower garden later.
    Great guest, better show.

Great Show. An honest to goodness man.

QOTD: Driving to our vacation condo in Angel’s Camp, CA we took the scenic route which meant driving through farmland packed with artichokes and other fresh produce. During our travels we stumbled upon Young’s Winery in Plymouth. A sign in front of the winery indicated they were sold out of their very popular Zin. We drove past and visited a few other wineries. On the way back a restaurant/bar displayed a large ribbon out front that proudly announced they indeed had Young’s Zinfandel. I commented that must be some kind of wine to be sold out at the winery and restaurant establishments advertising they have an allotment. The next day we stopped at a small market in Plymouth and decided to look at the wine assortment. Ironically, they carried the ’99 Young’s Zinfandel. Being curious, we bought a bottle to see what all the hype was. Later that evening, we grilled some burgers and corn and cracked open the wine. One taste, and I knew I was in Zinfandel heaven. That was the summer of ’01. We went back to the region in ’06 and had a great time also, but there was nothing like that first introduction to true Cali Zin.

Long time lurker. Killer QOTD. Thanks for all the information and excitement you share Gary.

Very recently, on my first trip to Napa with some good friends, we had the good fortune of meeting a farmer and tasting room hostess from Grgich Hills. After dinner, the 5 of us sat on their deck overlooking the vineyards, talked about biodynamic farming, and watched the moon rise bright and low over the hills. A phenomenal mix of old friends, new friends, electric conversation, and natural beauty. We were drinking 2006 Grgich Hills Cellar Zinfandel Miljenko’s Old Vines, which stands as a solid wine in its own right.

  • GV and it def is a smart move not scoring with the guest- it is a lot less pressure and you handle the tasting note better as you do not have to build up parts of the wine to over shadow a so so score-

Also Gary you will soon have to manscape down to your bellybutton if you keep unbuttoning that shirt

QOTD:The best wine I ever had was a 1995 Alexander Valley Vineyards Merlot in Key West Florida with my wife-girlfriend then- and we decided then that we would go to Sonoma for our honeymoon-Of course due to my dead sexy self and need to sexually disappoint as many other women as possible I did not have said honeymoon until 2002;)

  • Kevin K

QOTD: My wife and I took a German-speaking tour of the Amalfi coast in Italy. Neither of us spoke German, but we had a great time pretending that we understood what the guide was saying. Halfway through the tour we stopped for lunch at a restaurant on a cliff-side overlooking the ocean. It was a warm day and we enjoyed the best lunch and white wine I have ever had in my life. Whenever I think of that day, I can not help but smile.

Great show! Brice was terrific and was your best-prepared guest, by far! (I’m not swayed by the fact that he is USAF retired, even though my parents were in the Air Force when they met… )

QOTD: It was in Aqaba, Jordan at the tail end of our visit as part of a delegation with a bunch of my husband’s former classmates and their wives to view King’s Academy (www.kingsacademy.edu.jo), then under construction. It was a Jordanian-made white table wine we sipped while gazing out over the Red Sea, and even if I never again have the opportunity to taste something as wonderful, that memory will be enough.

  • Awesome episode! There is a deep truth which shows in this: listen to the elder, work together with them and build something great. The experienced bring the knowledge, the young the drive.

Best wine I ever had: warm summer night. I arrived late from work and stopped by at my favourite italian restaurant. He already closed the kitchen but for me and my friend he made a fresh foccachia and served a Lambrusco on the terrasse.

Great show today. Brice was down to earth and easy going.

QOTD: The best wine I ever had was with my girlfriend (now my wife, Julie) at Acquarello in SF and the wine was decanted – I think it was a Barolo. The whole experience was sensational and it was the first time I discovered what decanting a wine can do to the whole dining experience.

Fantastic episode, great guest. Loved the joke about the small fortune – that’s one of my favorite wine business sayings.

QOTD: My law school graduation dinner – 1985 Guigal Hermitage with my dad. He knew I was a fan of that bottle and had bought it and saved it for that occasion. We had it in a little quiet steak house in Lincoln.

Gary Vaynerchuk as National Director of Taste. I’m not sure whether to be delighted or frightened by the prospect?

Great show, thank you for giving us the chance to listen in on your conversation with Brice Jones. If anyone ever deserved a two-parter, it’s him.

Such an inspirational and passionate guest. Maybe it’s a war/military
thing. We (combat vets) go through the “fires” and the rest of life, no
matter how bad it seems, is gravy.

QOTD: Hands down THE BEST QOTD from a guest ever – REALLY makes u think.
    Answer:
Lenz (great LI winery) tasting room 2008 – dark, rustic barnyard.
Tremendous thunderstorm outside. Sipping ’05 old vines chardonnay
with a terrific local goat cheese and local baguette. The wine was
terrific (rivals a good Mersault) but the atmosphere and comraderie
    was priceless.

    – Great wine drunk alone pales to good wine drunk with friends

one of the best episodes and guests for sure. Would be interesting to hear him talking some more. Should have made it a two parter!

qotd: I already posted this once but here it goes.. It was new years eve 2008.. small family partie at my grandparents..a little while before i had read on the internet the best investment you could have made in that period was wine (meaning bordeaux 2005 futures at that time.. and what happened after that).
Anyway I didnt know much about wine.. just some things I picked up in school, and actually hadnt drunk alcohol in 10+ years! So I had bought some bottles to stock at home in a closet. A clos de l’oratoire des papes chateauneuf du pape 2003, 4 x chateauneuf du pape le vieux donjon 2005 and 2 Brancaia Il blu 2004.. both from which I had seen that it ended up in the top of wine spectator list that year.
Back to the party… So my family was talking bit about wine and what they were going to drink.. and I started talking along and telling about these ‘fine’ wines I had just purchased.. and they were like oh well, go get us one of those fine bottles then! At first I was like hesitating..I wasnt going to drink, was I? I gave in.. and got us the clos de l’oratoire des papes 2003.
We had great talks and a great time. Until now the best family party I can remember from last few years and just as well still the best bottle of wine I have enjoyed.
Now not even at the end of 2009 yet.. I still have a lot to learn.. but it has grown on me.. just as well as my collection.. of a few hundred bottles already. 😀

Thanks again for your stories as well Brice. & Gary, as usual. 😉

Great Episode. Very informative and entertaining.

QOTD: The 2004 Jordan Cab will always be a special bottle for me. While on a weekend getaway for our annivesary last year, we grabbed a couple bottles of this at at a shop near our destination to enjoy over the weekend. My best friend from childhood (and best man at my wedding) has a son named Jordan that was born in 2004 so we defintiely thought of them when buying these 2 bottles. Long story short, 9 months later my wife gave birth to our twin boys.
