line of the day – ‘I’m on fire with ‘quite’ and ‘quotes”

I love Port so I loved this episode. Two things stood out: Mott trying his best to ‘Crush it’ and a close up of GV’s nails – boy does he bite those poor fingernails…

Love, love, love the Porto wines. So under-appreciated. You mentioned the down-swing of its popularity here in the states. Why do you think that is? Are other wines taking over, ala, Pinot Noir. Is it too old school for the new generation of wine drinkers. Is it just marketed here? Not *cool* enough?

QOTD: I personally love port and bleu cheese. Your correct, there really isn’t a better combo out there…minus burgers and fries…hot dogs and onions. My last port was the Quinta do Noval 10 yr Tawney. So rich in butter cream, caramel, and nuts. At under 30 for 750ml, it was easily one of the best qpr’s I’ve ever had. Thanks again, G. I’m on the lookout for that cheese, too.

Quit? Long time vayniac knows that GV is going to fake right and go left because of his sore knee and a need for more comments?????

QOTD: I have never really gone beyond Fonseca but do enjoy it with Stilton around the holidays. I also make a great port, red cherry reduction for pork tenderloin that rocks flavor country.

Hope the doc makes your knee feel better.

Hey GV, did you notice than you were giving the finger to the first port you were tasting while trying to get the cork out of the glass?

QOTD: Port, it´s for old folks! frankly, I pass….

  • HD?! How long has that been around? ah… now i’ll have to rewatch the Heidi Barrett interview.
    Nice job Mott!

I very much enjoy port and think it is a great value and underappreciated. I spent several days in Porto a couple of years ago and have a better appreciation for it after tasting at many port lodges there. I hope others do not learn to like it or it will become like pinot and go up significantly in price.

  • I’m not really a port fan, but I think I’ll take your word for it and try the Port and blue cheese combo.

Hey, if its as good as Sonny and Cher like you say, it will be well worth it!

  • QOTD: When I was born my dad bought a bottle of 85 Grahams Vintage port (the year I was born) and he is keeping it until my wedding day. A couple of years ago we were at a restaurant in Toronto called George and they were actually serving the 85 Graham’s Vintage port by the glass, to say the least, we all had a glass and it will be one of the most memorable experiences of my life. That wine showed insane viscousness just like Gary was saying and I was enjoying every sip. Since my dad is a port collector I have always revered port and I for one am ALWAYS going to collect and drink the stuff.

If you don’t always want to sit and stare at the bottle I also like Tawney … taylor makes an incredible 20 yr old and it is something to drool over.

I have a question though gary, what is the deal with Colheita? I have had a couple of glasses of that and it is pretty damn good. What’s its story?

QOTD: I mostly purchase Port as gifts. Luckily, my cousin is a big fan of Port and I do get the occasion to try some. I’ve had the roaring 40’s cheese and port. Great combo! Dark chocolate is great also. Some interesting Ports to try that don’t break the bank would be some of the Australian brands, ie. Old Jonesy. Also Justin Winery in Paso Robles produces a nice port, called Obtuse–slightly lighter-bodied but not over the top sweet. Fantastic after-dinner drink.

Sporting a new Burberry shirt. Cool.

    Gary-
Fantastic episode! Want to get to port, do not know much about it, am now intrigued!!! Have a friend coming to town in the next few weeks and some cigars and port might have to be in the works.

QOTD: a young pup. I am working on my master’s thesis right now…I know nothing about port and my actual thesis. Better learn more on the former, right?

Ah, meniscus tear. Had one 10 years ago when I was 17. If it is, good luck, get it fixed. Have had no troubles since. Rehab was painful but worth it in the long run!

Great episode Gary. I wish I could give you more of a thesis on Port, but to be honest I have never tried any. After watching this episode I am going to turn over a new leaf and give it a try.

Love Port! It’s what really got me started with wine. Although, I’m not baller enough to be drinking vintage port. I enjoy LBV.

Gary – sympathy for your knee. I ruptured my ACL a few months back. Very painful. Can’t afford the operation so i’m still waiting for surgery. If it’s the miniscus that’s better news, but still a bummer.

QOTD: Port is widely considered an old persons drink here in australia. This of course is not helped by producers like Penfolds releasing their ‘Grandfather Port’. But, the way i look at it is that it’s everyone else’s loss if they don’t get into this stuff. I agree that port and blue cheese is a FANTASTIC pairing. It’s like champagne and oysters. I’m interested to find these wines, although it might be a stretch over here. Either way, thanks for the informative show. keep up the great work!

when i saw vintage port on the title i initially thought you were going to try the taylor 10, 20, 40 year tawny ports. I have only had the wallet for a 10 year so far, but i love it. it’s a fantastic sipper when lounging about late at night. when opened, how long can they last? they don’t oxidize the same way table wine does do they. on a totally different topic…have you ever had a wine from china? or more specific, from taiwan? i heard that they have some interesting rose, fruit wines.

  • QOTD: I love Port. I used to drink it at the end of almost every meal I had out, now it’s less so, but I still love it. I’ve got a question back, I never bought much Port for home consumption, but would occasionally. It seemed like I could just re-cork it an put in the liquor cabinet and store for weeks (if not months) without a problem. Is that really O.K. or was I slowly destroying my drink? My assumption was always that the fortification gave it a decent shelf-life even if it wasn’t lying down.

Thanks, Gary. Sucks about the knee. Good luck and good healing.

  • Port! Awesome.

There was a great lineup of port at the WBC 09; vintage, aged and regular tawny, even a rose port-(worth trying but I couldn’t see really going after)

Had a 6 pack of 94 port and drank it within 2 years, didn’t know what I had till someone said you drank that about 50 yrs to early. It wasn’t bad either, but now after having others, I see how good it can get.I still kick myself , well that’s how you learn.

Totally agree with you about good port and blue cheese. At the far end of a special meal with good wine, we bring out port, blue and/or stilton cheese, and some grapes or berries. But the guests need to know about blue cheese. Port and blue is a terrific combo for those that have learned to love it. A perfect desert and finish to a great meal! Haven’t popped any of my ’94 Taylors yet and won’t for years because of your comments. Thanks for that.

  • What an empty threat! You wouldn’t dare quit. But just to make sure, i’ll comment.

QOTD: Port is one of my favorite wine nights with the boys. I love Port/Cigar nights on the back porch in the Fall evenings. Great wine, stogs and conversation. That’s my take.
