line of the day – ‘I’m on fire with ‘quite’ and ‘quotes”

I love Port so I loved this episode. Two things stood out: Mott trying his best to ‘Crush it’ and a close up of GV’s nails – boy does he bite those poor fingernails…

Gary, I have been waiting on another Port episode, and you have delivered! Taylor Fladgate is one of my favorite portos and just seeing it on your table makes me want to go get a bottle of LBV or ruby right now (even though here it was 91 today). Thanks for the episode, it was awesome! By the way, no mention of the 2007 vintage in your show today…I thought that you would have touched on how it is being talked up right now just before it’s release…

QOTD: I truly enjoy a good port, and I love to have it while the weather is cold. It is truly a wonderful drink, even if it is probably the most overpriced wine for the amount of time you wait to enjoy it. Taylor’s, Graham’s, Fonseca….bring them all on now! I thirst!

  • Port is at least once a week at our house. $200+ is out of my ballpark.

QOTD: Port rocks! end of story. The current lack of interest means better deals for those of us that love it. Another legendary Port pairing, black forest cherry cake with whipped cream frosting.

QOTD: I don’t have it much (in fact have not had any for years). But port always makes me think of my English grandmother. Right into her 90’s should would go down to the Red Lion Pub every evening and drink the farm hands under the table and all she would drink was port. Funny the things that stick with you 🙂

Legendary combo: Mott and GV! True and Awesome.

QOTD: I don’t know squat about Port, and generally shy away from the heavier wines, but you description of it with the blue cheese has peaked my interest.

    Thanks

  • QOTD: the first time I tasted port was when I had an accident while on vacation with my grandparents, I was a very nervous kid and had just fallen on some rocks, nothing serious but the contemplation of near death takes its toll, needless to say my grandfather, a Doctor, had a bottle of Port and he gave me some to ease a bit of the scare in his mind. It didn’t work but I though it tasted like cough medicine which for some reason I was a bit fond of. When I graduated college a friend of mine opened a bottle his dad gave him for finishing grad school and that’s when I truly started tasting for the love of it. I find it still reminds me of that children’s cough medicine I loved when I was younger but furthermore the sweet and bitter you get from better quality wines is what keeps me coming back to any and every glass of Port.

The loopage of Michael Jackson in the background was awesome. Commented just because I don’t want to see you quit anytime soon.

QOTD: Never had a port, something else added to my list of wines to try.

Good show, nice to see some high end port up there.
QOTD: You often speak of wine as an experience to be had with friends and family, and I agree with that. I can’t think of a better type of wine to share with family and friends than port. It’s a very convivial libation. Opening an aged bottle of vintage port is an event in itself, and unlike many quality aged wines that can turn a lot of people off with their rustic, earthy characteristics, port is a crowd pleaser. It has the power to seduce wine snobs as well as beer guzzling grandpas. It’s a lot of money, and it’s a long time to wait, but in this life of special moments, it’s totally worth it.

  • QOTD: I like Port. Don’t drink it very much these days (maybe once or twice a year). Been to some of the Port houses along the river in Porto – a great travel stop for anyone interested in wine. Portugal in general is a terrific destination: good people, good wine, good weather, good surf spots.

    Gary,

Great Show. My wife and I love port, we’ve got about a case of it in the house. It is the one wine my wife can kill a bottle of by herself in a night. Have had Dow and Grahams, and we really like the 99 vintage port from V. Sattui in St. Helena, and the Ports from Prager Port, also in St. Helena (They make a dynamite white port called Aria, and their Royal Escort is amazing and very age worthy). I do really like the fact that huge vintages of old port are so affordable, relatively speaking compared to the big french guys. It is nice when you can get historically acclaimed wine and it does not cost $2000 or more. And being teachers it is nice when you can pick up a special bottle, for that special day, and not have to take out a second mortgage on the house.

  • The last time I had Port was ten years ago, when I first got into wine. It was a good effort. I find Port to be heavy. I could see it going well with a nice cigar (or cheese). I’d rather enjoy a nice Single Malt- I find that more refreshing. I live in a warm climate and that probably prejudices me. In a cold/rainy climate, I could see myself enjoying it more.

    Cheers,
    Mike

    “Gary”
    “QOTD” ‘Port” “is” “Kewl beans”!!!

“I’ve a QOTD for you” “Gary, what do you do with the rest of the bottles after each episode?” “Does Mott re-cork them and have an amazing collection of less then full bottles”?

“This Quotes for you” “If you believe you have a foolproof system, you have failed to take into consideration the creativity of fools” I can’t remember who said it but…it gets me by.

Great episode. I love port with Stilton. While Vintage is expensive and needs aging, I drink the Niepoort Late Bottle Vintage (LBV), for about $15 for a small bottle. Has those higher quality port tastes and easily impresses big wine fans. I don’t recommend Tawny port at all.

    QOTD: I love it.

I had a chance to try the 94 Fonseca several years back, about the same time Wine Spectator gave it and the 94 Taylor Fladgate their perfect 100 scores. I have to say it was definitely a memorable moment. Rarely, have I ever tasted a wine so well-crafted.

  • I love Port and being married to a Portuguese girl means that we always have Port in our house. We love it with strong cheeses and it comes out whenever we have guests over or can find an excuse really!
I know that Taylors has an amazing collection of high end Ports which I’ve not had much of an opportunity to try yet but this episode has prompted me to go out an indulge so I’m going to pop over to Odd Bins today and see what they have!
Thanks Gary, great episode. Haven’t watched for a while but I think you’ve just sucked me back in.

Great episode and for the QOTD, Port is so damn underrated, especially in my generation of wine drinkers who want to experience but when the talk is talked the walkin isnt exactly matched up and Port is one to get left behind and they dont know wut theyre missing . . . AT ALL haha. (Even further behind is Madeira! which is magical). . . My favorite is pairing a good NV port that is strong on the sweet coffee notes with a delicious fresh Flan. . . oh yeah, its bangin

Nice show GV! Nice polo too, my brother-in-law has exactly the same.

QOTD: Port is the meeting point for tradition with deliciousness.
    Portugal Rules!
