line of the day – ‘I know I’m making you guys vomit with all this camera action’

GV raw and unplugged. Absolutely love these spontaneous shows. Who else would have the balls to walk into a wine bar unannounced and start filming off the cuff? Answer – no one!

That place looked a little meh. Way too early in the day I’m sure.

Surprised to hear that your folks are moving to the city. Isn’t suppose to be the opposite when you get older? Must be the grand daughter.

QOTD: I honestly do not remember. I seldom, if ever, order by the glass and mostly go to byob’s to avoid bad wine lists and ridiculous mark ups.

QotD: I actually don’t drink a lot of wine by the glass because I’m part of the CKC so I tend to drink at home. It’s cheaper to try new things by buying a bottle then sharing with friends. We also enjoy expanding our palettes!

I don’t know if I would be so high on the Jets this year GV, rookie qbs seldom lead to much success, just saying.

QOTD: I never really order wines by the glass when dinning out, usually opt for a bottle.

Glad to have some catch up time! I enjoyed this episode- we haven’t had a wine list review in a while.
I just had a Dolcetto recently & LOVED it!

QOTD: The best was the ’05 Frank Family Vineyards Napa Cabernet, the worst (which wasn’t bad, just not what I was in the mood for at the time) was a Montepulciano D?Abruzzo that was a part of an Italian flight I had. Actually, the Dolcetto I mentioned above was the highlight of the same flight! I wish I could remember what it was.

  • QOTD: can’t remember the worst but, the best was an Adobe Guadalupe wine by the glass in February, quite tasty.

QOTD: I don’t really order by the glass, ‘cos I have no idea how long the bottle has been opened for (days?) But I like what you did by asking to see the bottle of wine. Maybe I should do that next time to make sure they pour me a fresh bottle.

Worst glass was trying a $7 (USD $4) glass of generic red wine at a very casual Italian/Japanese fusion eatery. I really wonder how long that bottle has been opened for.

Qotd: I can’t remember specifically over the whole year but i had a bad ass australian shiraz with steak Monday. It would have been a bit too hot with out the steak though so i guess it is more of a food wine. worst, a long time ago i had this really blah zinfindel but i couldn’t tell you the name of it.

Nice episode. Gary, you should do a tomato sauce pairing / taste test episode. Big $20 a jar sauces vs $2 bottles vs homemade?. Eh???

Great episode and great question. We have place in town that has a jazz night every saturday so I’ve been going through the by the glass offerings.

QOTD: the best was a Viogner but I can;t remember who produced the wine and the worst was a Coppola Zin.

QOTD: Can’t remember the last time I ordered wine by the glass, sorry. It definitely wasn’t this year.

  • Mott’s job certainly is safe. I had to look away and just listen to keep from getting dizzy!

QOTD: Best was an Amarone. Worst was a Chianti. Sorry, don’t remember the specifics of either.

Oh my gosh, every time you said “Todd Hollow”, I kept shouting at the screen “it’s TOAD Hollow, Gary…. TOAD Hollow”, you know, like the little froglike creature that is pictured on the label of the bottle. I don’t know if the toad’s name is Todd, but the winemaker is definitely Toad Hollow. Toad Hollow also makes a killer sparkling wine that is called “Risqué Methode Ancestrale Sparkling Wine”. Check out the website for Toad Hollow Vineyards at: http://www.toadhollow.com and see the listings for all their wines. The Eye of the Toad Rose’ is listed there among the wines they produce. Just an FYI.

The toad mascot of Toad Hollow is a cute little fellow (or girl?), and they even have a line of wines called “Le Faux Frog Wines”, including a chardonnay, a merlot, and a syrah.

By the way, neither I or anyone that I know works for or has any ties to Toad Hollow Vineyards… in case anybody is wondering.

Finally, thanks for providing us with each episode of Wine Library TV. We realize you put lots of time and lots of passion into your production of each episode. Thanks to Mott as well.

OK, this was a bad ass episode. I like the off the cuff wine tasting you just did.

To answer the question of the day. I think the worst wine by the glass (and it wasn’t horrible) was a house Chardonnay from Vera Cruz in Carlsbad.

The best wine by the glass I have ever had by the glass was a cup of Cava from the Boqueria venue Pinotxo in Barcelona Spain. WOW! It took a long time to order it, but what an experience.

Liking the way you’re mixing it up. Jim could’ve brought a little more Thunder, but you caught him unawares, so perhaps that’s not a fair criticism.

QOTD: I was at Veritas Vineyards this weekend and did tasting flights to try out all their offerings. Remembering your guidance from the Virginia wines show I was very excited about the Viognier and the Cab Franc. The Viognier delivered, best I’ve ever had (small sample group). The cab franc, one of my favorite varietals, was a disaster. Maybe not best and worst all year, but most memorable right now.

    Keep crushing it!

  • Hey Gary. Loved this episode. I was in New York last Sept and Turks and Frogs reminded me of a few places we stopped and had lunch.

It is sad but I have not had any wines by the glass lately as they are not offered at many restaurants in my area.

  • Nice episode! Good luck with your surgery…I am an orthopedic surgical tech and have scrubbed lots of meniscal repairs/removals. I’m sure everything will go very well, and you’ll be feeling better soon!

QOTD: I don’t order by the glass.

  • This show was awesome! I love doing video but I always feel like a dork talking to a camera. So just doing an impromptu show at a winebar? Yeah, you get props for that.

    QotD: none!

I just moved to Sonoma County so pretty much everything by the glass is delicious, sometimes a little overoaked (is that one word)? anyways I’ve enjoyed Sausal Zin, Dutton-Goldfield Chard, even Louis Martini Cab is a good bargain, Harvest Moon Winery has some great products. On the not so great side, Stuhlmuller Chard is way over oaked and over priced.

When are you coming to the Bay Area for your book signing?

  • Robin C

Is Toad Hollow a reference to Wind in the Willows? I know there’s a Toad Hall in it. It’s the best children’s book ever written. Set a copy aside for Misha.
Knee surgeries are supposed to be a cinch nowadays. Quick recoveries are the norm.
QOTD: I’ve had some good flights lately – a white flight included a verdejo, a Dashwood sauvignon blanc, and a gruner vetliner – I liked them all. More recently I had a viogner, a sangiovese, and a tempranillo, which I liked, but I can’t remember the vineyards. I had a flight of roses and I hated them all. I thought they tasted a lot like sherry.
