line of the day – ‘I know I’m making you guys vomit with all this camera action’

GV raw and unplugged. Absolutely love these spontaneous shows. Who else would have the balls to walk into a wine bar unannounced and start filming off the cuff? Answer – no one!

Like the freshness of the episode! I thought about you hustling your book and you need to get on Oprah! The “O” affect would make the whole nation Vayniaks! I wish I had a connection to get you on but I don’t. Get creative with your push to get on Oprah and good luck with the knee surgery.

Great interesting show – never know what you’ll do or where.

No wine by the glass for me this year.

I didn’t have surgery on my torn knee; had 10 years of a dull ache and it affected my walking. Now it seems fine like it just went away. Anyway…..

Prayers go out to you for your operation Friday. You’ll do great!

Great show Gary. Been lurking for about 2 years now and this is my first comment. Thanks for letting us be voyeurs in your wine life and for all the knowledge and passion you share.

Worst: Fox Brook Cabernet Sauvignon (from grandma had to taste it, realy can’t recall the vintage but I am pretty sure it is immaterial)

Best: Tie, Outpost 2006 True Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon & 2005 Elias Mora Crianza, different animals but both true to there game and equally enjoyable.

    Thanks again.

Not quite the NYC scenery I’m used to; nice to see the city in a tranquil state.

QOTD: Best: Pascual Toso Malbec Mendoza Argentina, 2007
Worst: Rust en Vrede Merlot Stellenbosch South Africa, 2006 (maybe because it was a Merlot?… Hmm GARY SHOW ME A GOOD MERLOT ALREADY!!! Dissapointment after dissapointment for me.)

  • Excellent hussle by FedEx to park the truck over your shoulder during the episode to get some free exposure. LOL

QOTD: I don’t buy too much wine by the glass in a restaurant/wine bar so I don’t even recall.

    Hey Gary,

Nice episode from the streets of Manhattan!

QOTD: Have not had any bad wines by the glass lately, but had two great reds. One was Anoro malbec, which to the best of my knowledge is only available in restaurants in Las Vegas. It was awesome with a filet mignon. The other was a glass of Valentin Bianchi “Famiglia” cabernet sauvignon [in the specialty – steak house – restaurant on a cruise ship]. Both happen to be Argentinian wines. Bianchi makes three quality levels of wine, and Famiglia is the least expensive. It was fantastic, so I can’t imagine what their top of the line would be like.

    Gary,

I forgot to say that I will be thinking good thoughts for you on Friday for the knee surgery. I wish you a speedy and full recovery, so you can chase after Misha! When she becomes mobile, you will need good knees!

QOTD – had a great rose with brunch at Perry St. right near your office a few weeks ago. had a terrible, undrinkable wine at a wedding last weekend. don’t remember any names…

  • QOTD: Don’t want to mention the place by name.
One of the local wine bars had several wines BTG that were obviously open for too many days. To their credit they dealt with my complaint immediately but I only told them about the 1st one. (i tried 3 different wines). After the 3rd wine, I gave up, paid and left.
I think in these slow times wine directors need to be very aware of rotations and pars. It is tough.

  • Madeline, I’ve had that Wild Earth before, it was pretty tasty. Quintin came through Dallas but the wines weren’t available at the time (’06) and I forgot about them. I guess I should look into it again.

Worst wine by the glass this year would have to be Satori Merlot/Malbec from India by the producer Sula. The best was a Chacolí called TXOMIN TXACOLI that I had about a week ago.
Gary could you do a tasting with a Chacoli and some other wierd and wonderful wines from unknown wine areas or grapes?
    Keep up the good work.

    Hi Gary,

QOTD: I don´t remember the worst one but the best one I do remember:
Knipser Cabernet&Co rosé (nice pure grapefruit)
I guess that´s the best summer wine I had in a while. Afterwards I figuered out that the bottle is less than 10 EURO!

  • Gary,

Loved the walkabout wine tasting, Jim seemed like and easy going guy. I don’t do many wines by the glass but here goes.

Worst – some swill at the Red Carpet Club
Best – Four Vines 2005 Zin

  • Love these flip cam -lets call them improv- episodes! For the people who get dizzy from the camera shake, this is the meanest of the mean shows. Not me. I’m used to all of Gary’s improvs; he’s like a brother to me. QOTD: Three days ago I went to the Wine Bar (here in Panama City) with Concepción, and ordered a glass of a NZ Sauvignon Blanc. It was a very good wine, but it gave me the impression that it was not completely well kept in the open bottle before serving. I also ordered a glass of a Spanish Tempranillo/Cab Sauv blend, which was pretty good.

    Missed the spitting.
Thought for sure you would give the sauv. blanc a ride.
I liked this format Gary. Two reviews in under 14 minutes, and the camera work wasn’t really that bad.
While Tribeca is a nice area (to visit), I’m sorry, but NYC just doesn’t do it for me.

Dizzy flip cam action. Hey, give Mott his job back! He needs to get out more anyway! Good show!

QOTD: Best Wine Dehesa de Rubiales Alaia 2006 from Leon. Interesting finish. It had 50% Prieto Picudo grape variety. It’s great to find a new variety or production method.

Worst Somebody put a glass of Blossom Hill on front of me which I had to drink to be polite. Sugar, watery tinned fruit juice and alcohol. There are good inexpensive wines out there but this is definitely not one of them.

hi GV–thanks for doing this awesome, authentic ‘takin it to the streets’ show! Are there ANY by the glass restaurants/bars in nyc where you can get a good glass for under $15? I think most places–even wine-centric places–offer wines that are not memorable.

QOTD: Gary- you are so right about restaurants serving wine too cold. I tried a Verdejo by the glass for the first time on a business trip down in Tampa. It was so cold I couldn’t taste or smell much of anything. By the end of the meal it had warmed up some and I could get a little something. The best by the glass was Educated Guess Cabernet- went straight from the restaurant to the adjacent wine store and bought a bottle or two.

In Manhattan in a few weeks and will seek out Turks & Frogs. The Flip cam casual rocks it!

    QOTD:
Worst: A Burgandy that the Wine Steward at a Bellagio restuarant recommended. Tasted like poop and not much else.
Best: Any wine with my wife!

Thanks for the show Gary! Slow down your camera pans and it would be less dizzying (is that a word?).

AotD: I don’t do much wine by the glass ….. only wine by the BOX !!!

Great change of pace episode. Loved your trip through the wine list. Always a tough choice, good for you for putting yourself out there to make a choice on the fly.
Sorry to hear about your injury, but was interested to hear you’re a tennis player. I’m still trying to figure out the northern Jersey tennis situation after my recent move, but hope to catch a day at the Open in a couple weeks.

GV – Don’t worry about the knee – tore both my ACL and Meniscus last year playing old man hoops – and am back skiing, coaching Pop Warner football and kids’ tournament basketball — you’ll be fine, though the meniscus will give you some pain when you exert and sometimes with weather – just be sure that you do the rehab and do it religiously

Nice job again GV! I was just wondering when you were going to do another restaurant episode.
QOTD: In fact I have only had one this year which I found fairly good. I don’t remember what it was called though. I had it at a spanish restaurant with my uncle a few months back.
