    Hi Gary,

When I saw the theme for today, I just had to stop everything and watch it. Really great show. By the way, have you ever considered tasting Japanese wines? Not rice wines, although I am sure that it could be an interesting idea, but wines from Yamanashi prefecture. I just went there last week on holiday(I’ve been working in Japan since 2002) and tried some of their wines; I really liked some of their Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blends, although what they are really known for is their Koushu and Bailey-A varieties. I am not sure if there are many Japanese wines available where you are, but it would be cool to hear your opinion.

QOTD. You know it has been a really long time since I ate cereal, as most of them are unavailable here, but I would have to say that when I was a kid, I loved Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Gary, this was a joke. Who drinks wine with cereals?
Here in Europe cereals are for green guys, for vegetarians and other weirdoes. You can’t be serious; cereals are no food.
But, if you like it, ok.

BTW. You learn people how to smell wine, how to taste wine, …
Someone should tell you how to eat. Not with a plastic spoon and do not talk while eating.

QOTD. There is to much real food, so I don’t eat cereals.

QOTD: I think I have said this before but it’s Kellogs Crunchy Nut Corn Flakes. In fact, haven’t you asked this question before? Anyway doesn’t matter! Have never drank wine with cereal before but I can see how Chardonnay would work with the milk as well as the cereal. From your comments at the start of the show hopefully people will stop telling you to stop interupting!

Cereal is the best thing ever invented – how can people think it’s weird to eat it at night? I can eat it at any time. It’s a shame we can’t get Captain Crunch in England – I could compare it with the Grand Cru Crunchy Nut CF. I had the Kabinett Riesling of the Von Kesselstatt (2004), still got 2 bottles left but saving them for about 5 years time. It’s one of the best Riesling’s I have ever had. You had the Kabinett Gary?

  • Very clever idea, Gary!

As for a favorite cereal …

    Fun: Reese’s Puffs
    Serious: Honey Nut Cheerios

Would be interested to hear what you’d pair w/Reese’s Puffs, since they’re peanut butter and chocolate …

Good show, Gary V. Can’t say I’m ever going to have a bottle of wine with my cereal in the future, but then again…why not?! A dram of whisky in my coffee maybe!

Riesling seems to be pretty low on the radar at the moment, certainly in the UK. Even I myself tend to completely blank riesling in the supermarket. Maybe a resurgence is due?

QOTD: Corn pops (do they still do these in the UK?), Crunchy Nut Corn Flakes, Weetabix (with added raisins).

QOTD: Growing up was all about the sugar. Sugar Smacks, Apple Jacks, Lucky Charms and going way back, Quisp. Loved the alien.
Now I usually eat cereal as a snack. Flax Plus Pumpkin (seed) Granola or Optimum Bluberry.

QOTD: I don’t eat cereals. They are full of sugar and other odd stuff. I usualy eat Muesli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muesli) with yogurt.

  • James S.

Ahhhh…cool episode. I really don’t eat breakfast much anymore so that means I don’t eat cereal very often. When I was younger, Apple Jacks was always my favorite sugar-buzz cereal. These days if I eat cereal, its usually apple-cinnamon or honey nut Cheereos.

QOTD: I usually like to blend my cereals together and eat it out of large cup, Im not a bowl guy. One of my favorites is a Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Cocoa Pebbles mix…another is Golden Grahams and Reeses Puffs.

Hey Gary! I loved this episode. Crazy pairing indeed but I can really imagine it works. I need to try this as soon as possible.
QOTD: Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Though I have to edmit that I have never had Cap’n Crunch. Shame on me!

  • Singularly the most unusual tasing I have ever seen and I am facinated in the pairings. One difficulty was that being from Australia, I am not familiar with the different cereal’s and thus cannot work out what the pairing is eg is Captain Crunch a corn based flake covered in sugar?

Seeing your picture in the NY Times this morning (congrats, btw) made me come back to see what you’ve been up to. Still awesome, as usual.
I’m making my own wine for the first time this fall. Maybe you can do a show on picking grapes for amateur wine makers.

Great episode. You always manage to keep us guessing at what is coming next. Cereal? Awesome!

    QOTD Life Cereal

Its not wine, but you should try Mountain Dew and Fruity Pebbles. Old college studying favorite. Keep it up Gary!

Many years ago I would retreat to my parents basement/cellar and play my drums for long periods of time. One day as a snack I found myself enjoying Miller High Life in 12 ounce glass bottles WITH those cheap ass cookies in the grocery store that were mini chocolate chip cookies with oreo stuffing inside. The pairing was insanely good! So I guess I understand the cereal wine thing as funny as it sounded

Interesting episode. But curious, what kind of milk were you using: Whole milk, 2%, Skim, Soy, Soy Vanilla. I would think that the choice of milk would greatly influence the pairing of the wine.

Keep up the continued dedication. It’s inspiring.

    Cheers.

QOTD: My all time favorite is a Cap’n Crunch Crunch berries. A twist on the iconic Cap’n Crunch. Not too far behind are; Lucky Charms,Alphabits, (remember them?), Quisp and Frosted flakes. As you can see I am a fan of the sugar cereals!

Love this site. Looking for wine podcasts and found this. It’s like crack. Actually made a purchase from Wine Library to help out Drew from last week. Love it.

QOTD: Crunch Berries as a kid…rarely got it, but when I did, I’d eat nothing but Crunch Berries until the box was gone. Now, I like Shredded Oats (by Barbara’s Bakery)…I’m older and need more fiber 😉

Side note: I had a friend in college who was the biggest fan of Cap’n Crunch ever. We started adding it to meals and foods. Best one was the Cap’n omelette…3 eggs, american cheese, add Cap’n Crunch right before you flip it.
