Good show…glad to see you get excited over some wine. I have only a couple of Dolcetto, but really enjoyed them. Most recently had one from Ascheri that was quite nice.

Did I miss something…what happened to the taste along shows on Fridays?

QOTD: Favorite Italian red, though I haven’t had many, would have to be San Leonardo Vino Tavola 2001 (Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot) from Trentino.

  • Don Simpson

Solid focused show and some interesting wines.

QOTD: I’ve always liked Barbaresco, but after watching this show I started drinking a lot of Dolcetto about 6 months ago. I guess that means I’d have to go with Dolcetto… I haven’t splurged and tried any many Barolos and I haven’t had any Brunellos yet.

good show gary. the info you’re giving out on these fast paced shows is fantastic. i haven’t gotten into the italians enough yet to really know their characteristics. but i will, and when i do, i’ll be sure to seek out dolcetto. keep it up. you’re the man.

  • Great show Gary, tried a bunch of Dolcetto’s and only a couple
    have really brought some thunder.
    QOTD: Tabarrini Sagrantino di Montefalco

Like this quick shows – miss the read comments. You are maybe traveling?

QOTD – can’t pick a favorite, but I really enjoyed the Martinelli Sagrantino Di Montefalco that you tasted a while back on WLTV. Had it (BYO) at a local Italian restaurant, and it was great. Big wine – nice acid and tannins were great with our food. Thanks for the recommendation!

QOTD: As far as Chianti Classico goes my fav. is Fattorie Melini La Selvanella Riserva 2003. This is old school, very nuanced, balanced but with beautiful yet elegant fruit.
Gary, how about looking for the thunder with another Sagrantino di Montefalco tasting? I haven’t popped my Caprai 25 ani yet but I expect that to be a great Italian red when I do.

The two Italian wines that changed eveything for me:
1.Barbaresco, never found out the name or year. A friend of a friend brought it to a Thanksgiving dinner at my inlaws years ago. Would really like to give her a call just to see if she remembered the winemaker, but we got into an ugly drunk argument by the end of the night…never spoken to again.
2.San Leonardo 01 & 03. Had them both at a tasting. Never had a wine quite like them. First time I truely got “terroir”

    Favorite everyday wine:
    Vietti Barbera D’Asti Tre Vigne
    Luigi Einaudi Dolcetto di Dogliani

    Hey Gary,
It would be cool if you could let all of your “in the biz” wine buyer fans know who the importer is of the wines you review. Would love to bring the Gillardi Dolcetto and other wines you really like into our restaurant, at least so I can taste, if not buy, but always have a battle figuring out the importer and distributor…

’04 Sassacaia. Three sips in a local wine shop and it sang so sweetly and with such finesse, I almost wept. Very delicate, subtle fruit playing the melody, while the genle mid-pallete grip laid down hte chords. Bought a bottle from you and she is one expensive princess. I’ll have just one shot at this so will wait a couple of years to open her up. But this Super Tuscan definitely changed my mind about what Italian wine could be.

Keep shining a light on the less vaunted Italian varietals. Hope to see a Ligurian Rossese or a Friulian Refosco, Pignolo, Schiopettino, and friends.

QOTD: Cabreo Il Borgo. One of the most elegant supertuscans.

QOTD: Favorite all-time? Barolo. Nothing can touch it. Value-wise? Rosso di Montalcino. I’ve had some fantastic wines under this label recently with great expression of fruit and terroir that are fresh, vibrant and affordable.

Dolcetto is great, but let’s be honnest it can’t compete against a well balanced Sangiovese, nor has it the deapth of barolo or Amarone.

QOTD. My favorite Italian is Ornellaia. In second place Tignanello.

  • Very, very, very nice episode. That third wine you tasted, the Pelissero, seems to me like a wine that I would have scored higher than you. In fact, I encourage you to send that bottle as part of a secret pack, up for grabs, to see what the people think of it. Man! When are we going to get a secret pack? QOTD: I’m willing to think that there must be an Amarone out there that could make me insanely happy; however, on a very different direction, I recently had a Michele Chiarlo Asili Barbaresco that really knock my pants off, for its extraordinary finesse, classy style, concentration of high quality fruit, and harmony. Secret pack, please!

  • Great show – last few have had great pace!

QOTD: Going to answer this jointly on behalf of the Mrs, since our palettes converge on these two reds. Everyday: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo; Special occasion: Amarone
