Just saw the posting below on QOTD and nearly pee’d myself laughing. ‘Three words ASTI SPU MANTE! ha ha ha ha
    1) Its a white
    2) Its 2 words! Asti Spumante…

poster must have been having a laugh!!

qotd – i got turned on to Nero D’Avola recently, Barolo rocks.

QOTD: As usual I can only remember the situation in which I had it. It was a Syrah from Tuscany. I don’t know anything else. I had it at my Grandmothers 80. Birthday almost exactly one year ago. Really amazing stuff.

Nice to see a Dolcetto episode. You actually turned me on to Dolcetto about a year or so ago and I haven’t had one in awhile.

qotd – Great question, gives me a chance to talk a little bit about Italian wines, but first I’ll answer it. Specific – 2006 Occhipinti Siccagno Nero D’Avola, general – I love Amarone. Italian wines have always been strange for me though, I can’t quite figure it out. As far as percentage of what I’ve tried that I like (or I should say, would buy again or recommend), Italy comes in low, maybe 30%, compared to about 50% for California and Australia, 65% for France overall, 75% for Spain, and maybe 95% for Portugal. On the other hand, some of the absolute best wines I’ve had have been Italian reds. Also, one’s I’ve been most impressed with have been on the extremes of the price spectrum, I haven’t had much I’, crazy about in the middle – Solaia and some Barolos at the very top, and then lots of $8-12 Dolcettos, Neros, and other lesser known regions and varietals.

QOTD: Don’t think I have found it yet but I think I need to drink more Italian reds – usually hit the whites for some reason (price probably!) The best red that sticks in my mind though is the 2005 Villa Antinori IGT Toscana – it was super smooth and elegant, so nice in fact that it will be my Christmas wine this year.

QOTD: 1995 Tommasi Amarone, ’97 Bussola Amarone. I enjoy Dolcetto’s, Brunellos, Sagrantino di Montefalco, or is that the other way around? Italian frizzantes are high on the list. I’ll stop there.

  • I had a supper with Georgio Pelissero about 6 months ago and I had the same reaction to his Dolcetto. He is a really nice guy and he suggested trying it decanted, which I did and it opened up very nicely. You should try to get him on the show the next time he goes by New York!

QOTD: Recently I had a beautiful Aglianico del Vulture, Vigne di Mezzo 2004

  • Dolcetto wines are beautiful. Nebbiolo and Barbera both hog the rosso spotlight in Piedmont but Dolcetto deserves more recognition.

QOTD: I love Aglianico from Basilicata and Campania (either from DOC Vulture or IGT Campania). I’m Dutch and they pair beautifully with Goudha cheese.

I was so excited to come onto the site this morning and see Docetto first thing when my page loaded… made my day. Thanks Gary! I think my favorite wine at the moment is a Nebbiolo, I haven’t tasted too many lately but what i have tasted i have really enjoyed!
