QOTD is easy, because i just had one brunello (2x) and it is -as you say- downright delicious.
we’re talking about 2001 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino. And after seeing this episode, i can’t wait for tasting any brunello of the 2004 vintage.

Good job, and thanks a ton for providing us w/ constantly great wine.
oh, and btw, my first comment ever.

All the best from (usually Hamburg, Germany ? but because of a little friendsy-friends visiting action) … San Fran, CA!

    Gary-

Another excellent show. I am looking forward to trying some brunellos. Barolo & vino nobile wines are fantastic, so I have great expectations for the brunellos. How about showcasing some Vino Nobile di Montepulciano?

Never had a Brunello, but I am glad to see you blown away for a change. Your dad is right that you are a tough critic! Serious fun, thanks.

……i just bought 12 bottles of Il Poggione Brunello about 2-weeks ago from none other than the WL! I love this wine and the producer……try the 2004 Rosso! I’m curious to know how you would rate the 2004 Il Poggione Rosso Gary? Why do they now certify this wine, prodotto certificato?

  • QOTD: I’ve only had a half-dozen or so, and so far a vertical of 97 and 01 Poggio Antico has been my highlight.

I can get half bottles of the 04 Il Poggione here, and I will be buying. After a few hundred episodes of watching, I had the gleeful moment of you showing up on my monitor to taste a wine I was already considering buying for the cellar. So glad to get another opinion – and a positive one at that means: buy.

I’ve spent a lot of time around Montalcino, and feel like a bit of a jerk for not being loyal to their wines. That is about to change.

  • Love brunellos, wish I could afford to drink more. Had Banfi of course, Donatelli? Castelgiocondo? Can’t remember or spell them all… So for the rest of us, I think someone already asked, what about the nobiles and rossos from 2004?

great show, nice to see you get excited about something for a change ;).

Loving the format, especially this ‘battle’ week. I find it very helpful and informative when you compare wines of the same variety in the one show.

Congrats on the book too 😉

oh yeah, for the record…regarding your comment a few episodes ago that people were enjoying a more wine focused, concise show; yeah they are great, but I am sure I speak for a lot of viewers when I say feel free to share with us whatever the heck you feel like sharing. Wine is great, I love drinking wine, learning about it etc. but I don’t watch the show just for that. If the show ran half an hour I would still watch; it’s certainly better than most of the crap on tv. Thanks for all the great shows, and I hope you keep them coming.

Based on my waning memory, I can’t remember which I have had, but cannot wait to try some 2004’s.

    Congrats on the strong release!

Haven’t had any ’04 brunellos yet, the ’05 bordeaux has exhausted my wine budget. Had a ’01 Valdicava in Florence on my honeymoon and to this day it is my favorite brunello!

  • Great show. Big brunello fan. Sometimes hate to admit it but some of my favorite Brunellos have been Banfi….1995 poggio Oro, 1997/1999 brunello, and the 1999 Mura within the last few years, all were awesome. La Fortuna 1999 and their 1997 reserve are also some of my favs.

La Casa is my favorite Brunello- had it in Siena in ’06 and again in ’08 when I visited Montalcino. Truly a fabulous wine.

Good luck with the book and the J-E-T-S will be back next week.
