Couldn’t agree more about the horrible packaging on the Pehu. Unfortunately I’m not a P Diddy style baller so won’t be trying it

Have not had much Champagne, just developing a taste for it really.
But my husband and I really liked Frank Family Rouge and I really liked the Blanc de Blanc. Also like Piper Heidsieck.

QOTD: CKCs can’t afford Champagne, I’ve found. Not me, at least. Going to have my first at my wedding in May. Drinking lots of Cava when I feel like some bubbles in the meantime.

    Hey Gary,
Thanks for the Jedi. Thanks for this champagne episode. My birthday is coming up November 8 and I need some bubbles. I will look for Legras.

QOTD All of the good sparklers I have had were in a restaurant and I do not recall what they were. This will no longer happen with my new found wine passion.

qotd; krug 1995 while on vacation in myrtle beach, sc. spent the day on the golf course, had some serious sushi for dinner, and drank the bubbly on the beach watching the sun set. “too much of anything is bad… but too much champagne is just right!”

It wasn’t under the Eiffel Tower but…

I proposed to my wife on the beach in her hometown with a split of Cliquot (I didn’t know better at the time.) I had nearly frozen the bottle at home, wrapped it in some heavy insulation and flown 1000’s of miles with the ring safety pinned in my pocket. After I had secured a ‘Yes’ to my proposal, we popped a nicely chilled bottle of bubbles. I have no recollection of what they tasted like though, I was a little distracted by my joy.

So…that bottle was the best I have ever had, even though I can’t remember much about the bottle’s contents.

Runner-up: The ’97 Laurent-Perrier Magnums you opened at DeLoach in April 08. Easily the best TASTING bubbles I have ever had. Fun night too.

QOTD: Best bottle of bubbles? No contest. My parents and I traveled to Europe when I was in my mid 20s, and at the time, I spoke German well enough to get by. We arrived in Interlocken, Switzerland on my folks’ 25th wedding anniversary. When we checked in to our nice but modest hotel, I explained to the manager – in German, while my English-only parents stood by smiling – who these fine people were and why this day was special. Then, I asked if, when we came down for dinner, he could arrange to have a bottle of champagne sent to the table. He smiled and assured me that he would take care of it. That evening, just after we had ordered, a man in an impeccable black tuxedo arrived with a bottle of Charles Heidsieck and explained – in lovely English – to my astonished parents that the bottle had been pre-ordered by their son. I don’t think I’ve seen them ever smile quite so broadly. THAT was a spectacular bottle of bubbles!

I’ve got lots of great champagne experiences. But one just happened last weekend. My wife Keri and I went to a tasting at K&L Wine here in Hollywood. There were about 25 vintners from Champagne pouring over 70 wines. All the big boys were there: Cliquot, Krug, Cristal, etc. It also happened to be our 1 year anniversary. So that made it all the more special.

We found something that I think blew them all the big names away. Champagne Aspasie. They had 5 wines and each of them brought HUGE thunder. Do yourself a favor and find Aspasie champagnes. And I noticed Wine Library doesn’t carry the brand. Get on it guys. It’s f-ing amazing!

  • I, too, love da bubbles but agree with you again, the most hideous label I have ever seen on a wine over 10 bones. Wow, what were those French thinking? Obviously, they were not.

QOTD: I’ve had a few memorable moments with Champagne which I’m sure most of us have had in our lives. I would say the most recent would be some DP bubbles with a very special lady this past month. It was soooo memorable.

    Cheers!

    Go Colts!

  • The best bottle? I would say Pommery Apenage or Gossett are right up there with DP. I stayed at Chateau Boyer (Les Crayeres) years ago and visited their cellar and this Champagne will knock your socks off!

  • QOTD: Best bottle: I was married in Paris and we had our close family and friends there. My father in law ducked into a wine shop and dropped 80? on a magnum of something sudsy. The cork was popped into the seine after the ceremony, and we even shared with the old french dude painting a scene a few meters from where we stood to get married. I have no idea what it was – it was pre-my-wine-geekness, but for certain, it was the best bubbly we’ve had.
