Awesome episode! Canadian wines seem unique.

What do you think makes them special?

    QsOTD:

I went to Toronto when I was five years old. As we were walking through the underground, I got burned on the arm by someone swinging a cigarette in their hand. I remember being upset, but we did eventually find some ice.

As for the wine, I just tried a $3.99 Torrontes from Trader Joe’s, which I’ll be doing a review of over on cork’d, but I’m giving it an 82 – nice aroma, but way to light bodied and not enough acidity for my palate.

  • GV,

Eight month lurker here. My wife and I are looking forward to your book signing in San Diego. We are celebrating ten years of marriage that week.
The last wine I had was my “last” bottle of Jacob Franklin 2004 #60 Mon Chou. Spectacular! 96 points!

    Keep changing the wine world,

    Steve

I floated by Canada in a boat in the San Juan De Fuca Straights when we went orca watching in the 1990’s – never set foot there. Last wine: Chateau Gloria Saint Julien 2005. I’d give it a 90 point score. Went well with Braised Short Ribs.

  • Lurker, no. Comment now and then, but being av swede it’s somethimes hard to comment on things typical american. Nevertheless I guess Canadian wine is like swedish wine, driven by the climate and therefore a bit different.
QOTD: Lomond Syrah 86 and have just finished av review on corkd.com I’m working 🙂

We’ve been to Calgary, Edmonton, and Banff and had a great time! Canadian ice wines rock! Last wine we had was a 2004 Chanson Vire-Clesse. White Burgundy that we got on clearance for $9.95. I (Andy) rated it 88+ points and it’s a great food wine. Great, fun, little show. Thanks for all you do Gary!

Blame Canada, Blame Canada. Caduceus Anubis 2006 – 91 points.

When I saw that you were actually doing a show while on tour, I was actually shocked. Now, I had asked a few shows ago if you were going to record any shows but I wasn’t actually expecting it to happen. This shows how much you care for your fans. I’m glad the tour is going well and I’m sure your family misses you as much as you’re missing them…

I’m also happy to hear that your still pushing to reach show 1,000. We’ll be waiting for you here in SF for that milestone show, just as you did for show 500. You told us at the Book Passage in Corte Madera, CA that you would love to come back and do your 1000th live so I’m counting down and will be there!

QOTD: The closest I’ve been to Toronto was in Georgetown, about 10 years ago. I was also in Vancouver a couple years ago for our 3rd anniversary and all I can from visiting both cities is that Canada is a beautiful country! Extraordinarily clean as well.

And about the most recent wine, I had an ’07 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Private Select that cost 9 bux. I decanted the lil sucker for about an hour and i was surprised at the results. It was unexpectedly better than what I expected. 87pts. Have had more expensive wines that haven’t made me feel that good.

    Hasta la vista, Gary!

Cool. Glad you could do a road show, even if the wine was an 84-point Pazzz.

QOTD1: Canada is great! I love it especially up by the Alaska-Canada border (Haines Junction, Whitehorse). Not so familiar with Toronto, which I’ve only seen in passing. Gonna have to make that trip for real sometime.

QOTD2: Quinta do Infantado Tawny Port. It doesn’t taste like a $40, 20-year tawny, which is fine because it doesn’t cost $40. Good value at eighteen bones, I liked it a lot. Nice depth, good nutty, caramel flavor with just a hint of the pluminess left over, and a very long, tasty finish. 90 points. 92+ on the inflated dessert wine scale.

I always appreciate the hotel room shows.

Right now I’m drinking a 2005 LAN Crianza Rioja. It has a slightly dusty sour cherry and raspberry nose with juicy ripe red cherry and strawberry flavors. There’s also a tealike component on the palate and a hint of the dustiness. It has nice (med+) acidity with decent (med) length. It’s not too complex but what’s there is nice and for a 15.99 retail I’d buy it again. 84 (good bordering on very good)

  • Andrew Stone

Hey Gary love the cAnAdA love, the last wine I had was a 2007 chianti, from trader joes, the $5 special. it was ok, I give it a 82, for the price, it gave my pasta what it needed! haha

Last time I was in Toronto was in 1990, beautiful city and beautiful people. Canada is a great country, I love it.

QOTD : Last wine I had was yesterday. An Au Bon Climat pinot noir 2005. Not great, maybe 87-88 pts, but QPR is terrible since it costs about $50 usd or so.

  • Remember traveling to play soccer in Toronto/Ontario for a big tournament as a kid several times and playing street hockey for 1st and only time between games. Great time.

People were super kind and I remember some fast food chicken chain commercial they played over and over (“Swish allay they make it fresh every day.” something like that – totally useless for me to remember

Happy Halloween Vaynernation. such a Cool night for the kids.

I’ve been watching a long time but am working on coming out of the comment closet.

Thanks for taking to the time to a do a show on the road.

As for Canada, I think it’s pretty darn great. Canadians are great people. Favorite thing I’ve found in Canada = the BIODOME in Montreal. Never been to Toronto, though.

I recently participated in a Chardonnay blind tasting (10 wines) and my favorite was Hanzell 2006, surprising because California Chards are often overoaked for me. I give it a 91.
