90/100

lines of the day – ‘this really does smell like a sheep pooped in your nose’ and ‘I feel like “my tummy’s burning” like Ralph on the Simpsons’

Another winner, GV really on point during these back-to-back taped episodes. Mott looking for the correct response at the end and floundering as usual

Had a Foxglove Central Coast Chardonnay…thought it was very nice…a little butter and a little oak, but very balanced with good acid and citrus. So I was excited to see their Zin on this episode. Sorry it didn’t show as well.
QOTD: My in-law’s extended family, most of whom don’t drink…so I’ll be sneaking a few bottles on the side.

QOTD: Will be going to the oldest son’s home and having lobster, so I will be providing some crisp whites and some Pinot Noir.

    Happy birthday Gary!

  • Thanks again for chugging out some great content on Italy, and now this Zin show. I do like Cali Zins from time to time, although I tend to get a high-disappointment factor from “the burn” on some. Will have to try the Seghesio Rockpile, as it sounds like a Zin my wife would even enjoy.

QOTD: Spending it out in Jersey at the old crib with my side of the family before hitting up LI over the weekend to spend with the ILs. Will likely have a Rhone or a Zin for my fam, though I will have to shop for my ILs for a Kosher alternative.

Hope to see more zins shows later this year Gary!! One of my favorite varietals!

QOTD: MY wife and son to her aunt’s house, and then my grandmother’s house, and then to bro-in-laws house. Busy day. Wine will only be drank at last stop though 🙁 And maybe not even there.

I do better to have left overs on Friday and have wine myself.

    Gary, Gary, Gary…
For the LOVE OF GOD that place in the central valley in California where they grow grapes and make wine is pronounced ((Pa-so RO-bless)). Think Spanish, my friend. Letdown on the Zin’s today. Try and get your hands on some Santa Ynez Zins. I tasted a few last week on a trip up there. Was pleasantly BLOWN AWAY.

We always go to my wif’s sisiters’ house. I am always in charge of the wine. Before dinner, we have a NV sparkler from CA, with dinner I will bring a Paraiso 2007 pinot, ariesling-kabinett 2007 from Germany and a CA zin- not sure which one, probably Four vines- either the iker or the Sophisticate.

I cook my bird on the grill. It’s not dry! But I also put a lot of love into it. Brine it in an apple juice concoction for 24 hours. then cook it breast down in chicken stock for the first hour. then breast up for the last few hours. I have grossly overcooked it and it’s still not dry.
QOTD: I will be with my inlaws much to the chagrin of my parents.. Don’t know if it’s at my house or my sister in laws though.. should I cook or should I let them? Should I go to the football game?
    Ahh Decisions.. decisions..
    QOTD 2: AuBonClimat Pinot Noir.

Seghesio zin was given #8 wine of 08′ by Spectator so they like it as well. Ironically, no wine for me on Thanksgiving, but awesome Oktoberfest beer. Our family tradition is to go to a nearby German restaurant every Thanksgiving. They serve the various German Oktoberfest beers: Spaten, Haacker-Schoor fresh on tap. Mmm!

We’ll be with our in-laws sons and friends.

QotD: I am looking forward to joining my sister, her husband and our parents at the NC mountain cabin for Turkey, ham and of course perusing our “cellar” for a few choice bottles (Riesling/Gewurtz and something red as well as a Sauterne or Tokaji for my husband). We’ll probably find something in Asheville or Black Mountain as well as we cannot stop purchasing wine when we are there (TN choices are so lacking). Cheers!

  • Can’t believe that you would do a California Zin tasting and not include at least one bottle from Rosenblum Cellars- definitely my favorite zins come from there. You stated that you were going to do more zin tastings.Hope you get one of theirs on a future show. Tena Gallagher

  • Gary, thanks for the kind words! We think you were spot-on with the Rockpile Zin evaluation. Bold yet Balanced, Purity of Fruit whith Classic Structure is what we try to do! If anyone would like more info on this wine or the Rockpile AVA, we put together a cool marketing piece. See Seghesio.com under the “For the trade” then ‘Point of Sale’ the ‘Rockpile piece’. Cool breakdown of Rockpile’s history – not just our wines: http://www.seghesio.com/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=aY61h9fRr0w%3d&tabid=245
