Great show, loved the guest; really funny, laid back and straight up said what she thought.

  • QOTD1) I have been trying to crush it in my day to day life by really figuring out what makes me wake up every morning. I am really trying to figure out what is the utmost important thing in my life and what is the thing that I am most passionate about, so far I think it is the fusion of food and drink, I’ve bought the url’s I have hired a web designer, I am working on my content and I am gonna unleash something soon. Keep posted!

QOTD2) The most integral part of the party is people, you know when you go to a party and the host tries to amalgamate two different groups of friends and they’re totally different or they’re totally the same and they’re just fighting over the spot light? I think half of the battle is creating the right mix of guests. I mean it is going to be the people who are interacting together, I mean the food and wine could suck but having a great time with you friends will make the event epic. I think the food and drink are equally important if you can’t control who you’re inviting, like a wedding, you can throw all the money you want into the event but you’ve gotta feed people and they need drinks to celebrate with you. I definitely agree with you spending the extra few bucks on getting some quality food / beverage is important, noticed, and enjoyed by the guests.

QOTD: I think the host often has a lot to do with the vibe of the party. Beyond that it matters most who is there and what conversations you can get into. Music, booze, food are all a plus…

She seemed a bit nervous at the start but a good guest. The railroading GV was in force some times just as she was warming up. But all in all a good episode.

QOTD1: Haven’t got the book yets so can’t say πŸ™‚

QOTD2: Hospitality πŸ˜‰ Actually I would say location. A good location doesn’t automatically make a good party, but a BAD one will scuttle it right from the start.

It was very a solid show with a terrible wine and some nice cava. going to try to find that one for thanksgiving.

QOD: its the theme baby! The theme determines who you invite and what style of party you have.

She is ADORABLE. Very nice foil for Gary.

QOTD: I would have to agree with some people above – the host’s effectiveness at getting everyone to feel welcome and intermingle is key.

Also, Gary, why couldn’t you come to Louisiana one week later, when I’m home from college?!!
Be sure to enjoy yourself in New Orleans a bit, even if your gig is out in the burbs.

  • Interesting episode. I agree with you and the Cava, very versatile wine.

QOTD: Sure hospitality is an important factor… however, you cans still have rude or bothersome guests even if you’re the nicest of hosts; I would say great guests to mingle with, because if everyone there is joining in the conversation and playing and dancing and singing and helping out a bit etc., the party is just that much better and becomes unforgettable. (a corollary to my comment would be remember to make a fantastic guest list. )

  • Nice show. Enjoyed the guest!
Hard to imagine the stress she must face in that job, and the insane people she must deal with.

great show and guest. You made her very happy about the plum. I guess I need to try some cdr and that sounds like a good one. Is every new vintage the best ever for somebody?
Check the bushes after Kahuna leaves the party.
Good food and booze always help.

    Gary,

Love the party planner – she was great. I loved the innocent, no nonsense approach she had on each of the wines – it was really refreshing.

  • Gary, when are you coming to Pittsburgh? I sent my sister to your event in Portland, but she doesn’t do an adequate impression of you.

    Great guest!

QOTD: Music! That’s what gets people up and dancing.

Awesome guest!! She does need to just trust herself and let loose with what she smells/tastes in a wine.

QOTD: The people. Great people can make a bad party fun

Great show…she was a really charming guest.

QOTD: I agree with her that hospitality is the most important aspect of a great party. I would add that finding a way for everybody to assimilate is important. Either through a theme, allowing for contributions from each person, or a lively atmosphere.

  • Oh, Gary, I got so excited when I saw you were tasting a Languedoc. TRAGEDY STRIKES. I gotta admit, there are some beasts around here. Oh well. I will have to find twice as many delicious wines around here to bring up the average!

Nice show… nice recommendations… and Marcy, well done. What I was glad to see was that, while it would be nerve-wracking to rate the wines live, not knowing what Gary would say, she and he managed to come to the same honest conclusions.

re: a party… I think it’s three things… 1) who you invite (chemistry counts and you need a fair share of catalyst types who are just excited to be there) 2) what’s on the bar (the wine, the liquor, the beer — if it’s all subpar, it isn’t just a quality issue, it’s a statement to your guests about how serious you are about making sure it’s a great event… sounds superficial, but it’s true) 3) the music (if it’s wrong for the crowd, if it’s too loud or not loud enough, if it’s not well played… it just hangs over everything else like a fog).

There are, of course, other key elements… like something good to celebrate (always nice to have a single point of focus for all the guests), great food (what else would you pair with all that great wine?), and a great atmosphere that’s not too brightly lit (nothing better than chatter and the clink of glasses in just the right shade of semi-low and warm yellow light).

But of course… I’m not really answering the question if I name EVERYTHING at the party, am I?

P.S. GV, thanks for the recommendations on the 2007 C. d. Papes and C. d. Rhone… I live some of the year in France, where I’m writing from right now, so I’ll be sure to pick some up.
