I have to say that Jeff Bundschu is pretty awesome. I’m digging the “Elvis Costello meets the Dude” look, and his personality/presence is a great blend, too. Anyone who can roll with the outrageous non sequiturs of the Thunder Show in the midst of his family history is a total rock star. Sounds like he makes good wine, as well.

Love that Jeff GunBun guy. Been to the winery in 2000 and had a great time. Super Gewertz and nice Cabs too. Punched the Pinot that year. The wine tastes like real wine, terroir wine. Looks like maybe he’s got a pretty good slapshot from all that wine punching. I could use a partner on “D” here in CT with a couple of screws loose and he’d fit right in. Great episode and ready for Pt. Deuce!

Good Part 1. Part 2 tomorrow I guess.

And GV thanks for all the great shows so far this year.

  • I have mixed emotions about Gundlach-Bundschu. They were one of my first favorite wineries. I loved the old Rhinefarm Vineyard Caberenets. I also had the priviledge of selling at the distributor level, the Bearitage wines when they were really good values. However, when they launched their Chilean brand Santa Monica, I though it was one of the worst wine brands that I had in my book. Very poor. On the recommendation of your guests father, we were put on quotas, which was a new concept to me at the time. The threat was that we would lose their estate (GB) brand if we could get enough accounts to take their swill. They lost me then and there. I have no problem with going for volume and even putting out a negotiant brand using the synergy of the your distributor network. But to leverage the quality of a good brand to drive the volume of a crappy one rubs me wrong. It sounds like Jeff is trying to turn that attitude around and I commend that.

Great show. Really enjoyed the guest.

However, on the history, his web site says they come from Bavaria–beer country. No wine to speak of in the home country and RHINEfarm?–no where near. So what is the story? Is there an Alsatian somewhere?

I do need to try that Gewurz, though.

  • GV didn’t mention the Jets loss. Oh well. Been to this winery 5 times in the last 10 years and always enjoy the tastings there and own several of their wines.

Great show so far. This cat has got personality to push a brand. Appreciate your ability to keep it real with him sitting next you. He looked a little ruffled by the Pinot score. Cant’ wait for tomorrow.

What do you think of the 09 Beaujolais for Thanksgiving? I’ve heard it is better than usual.

  • I like light PN’s. I will have to look for this one. Was your father Jim Bundschu? I think I met him in Rochester Minnesota in the mid 90’s.

  • Cool show with a great guest from the west coast. I look forward to part 2.

    Best,

I have been waiting a long time for a dry Gewurt, so I jumped on 6; only available at the winery.
Interesting stories from the guest. Show is always great with (knowledgeable)guests.

Hey GV, fun guest, really liked the flow of the show. Great job with letting your guests finish answering before the next question. Oh and BTW, “Sanchise” is a fraud, that guy is terrible!

Jeff B. is a good guy and has a great family. I ride my bike up to the beautiful winery and watch Shakespeare and sometimes a movie outdoors on the lawn on a hot Sonoma summer day with a bottle of their excellent Guwertz. Well worth visiting if you are in Sonoma’s East side near Carneros.

  • This is quite an interesting first part, I like it when you have winemakers as guests, they all bring such amazing insight to share. Never had his wines but I will add them to my list at cork’d.

    Good 1st part.

  • Great episode Gary. I was watching some older Thanksgiving episodes and in #585 you refer to the 06 Cleo as an agin quarterback with some gray in his beard that plays for a new team but still has it…is that like a Nostradamis Brett Farve prediction? thanks again for the great show…oh, when are you coeming to Hawaii?
