line of the day – ‘what I can do is just be honest’

Guest is obviously a good guy if somewhat overawed. Best moment is Mott making his directoral debut by instructing GV to ‘move the bottles’ out of the way of the guest. Who’d have thunk it?

QOTD: Orange County, CA. When I went to college, I realized that Orange County is REALLY different than most other places, but I still love it here! It’s hard to explain, but I definitely feel the OC “terroir” in me. I can’t wait to travel more and soak up the cool vibes from other places, though.

Please tell your guest to distribute Merlove to Netflix. That will make a lot of people happier for the holidays.

  • Keep on keepin’ ON! Rudy. And thx for the director’s cut copy of Merlove!

QOTD – my terroir: Born and raised in Canada of Italian heritage, living in Munich for the past 14 years. Kinda like ice wine made of Montepulciano enjoyed at Oktoberfest.

Look forward to getting out to London for the Crush It! book launch on December 8th!

I just recently worked a vintage in Washington State after traveling the world for 9 months. I hope that I took a little bit of AUSSIE with me. Hell, I know I did.

Can’t wait to see the movie.

I felt about this guest the way Gary felt about the last wine: It was OK, but I just wasn’t feeling it. A little awkward, a little off-balance. Great QOTD, though. Probably the best ever.

QOTD: I’m a negociant-product, personally. No real roots. I have pieces of Minnesota, Alaska, Seattle, St. Louis, California, and North Carolina in the mix. One of the most distinctive aspects is the Alaska part. Alaska is an experience not many people have, even as a tourist, and I spent a significant part of my childhood there. The value of open space and undisturbed country is ingrained in a way that it can’t be for most people.

    Happy thanksgiving, all!

  • QOTD: Standing with one foot in the forrest surrounded by a culture bulit on hard wotk, fear of change and distrust and loyalty for masters and the other foot in the city full of academia, brainfood, knowledge and holistic views I ‘m a strange character at any place. But still neccessary for this society. For what can a blend be without the blend?

  • Great show and guest but, c’mon, the great irony of sideways was that his most cherished wine contained merlot!

Hey Gary, great guest, smart and the ball. Thanks for continuing to carry the flag for Merlot. Love the comment by your guest on falling in love with St Emillion, so true. BTW, he down played being an Eagle scout. You need to know how much work and dedication is required at the age of 11 to 16 year olds to accomplish this goal. Not suprised he had the drive to make a movie. Great show!

QOTD: Sonoma County raised but followed Mom around Europe during high school. Like to think it added some depth and layers to my personal terroir as well as a better appreciation for the differences (and subtleties) of other people’s terroir. Awesome question!!

Thanks – hope the movie does well.

QOTD – I am from the northern suburbs of NYC… born, raised, and still live there today. I think it is one of the best places in the world since I am an hour away from the best city in the world, but still live across from a fruit farm that has been family owned and operated for about 150 years. I think what I bring with me is the big-city experience/familiarity/sophistication as well as the small-town friendly/unpretentious/family-focus qualities. Also – go Yankees!

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

QOTD: I have lived in Rhode Island for 20 years now, and the most unique thing here are colloquialisms, or slang terms. In most parts of the US, you ask for a “Milk shake” or “shake” and you get what is expected. Here you must ask for a “frappe” or more esoterically, a “cabinet”. No, not a piece of furniture, but ice cream, milk and flavored syrup in a cup and blended together.

  • Working in a tasting room in Washington, I always need new vocabulary so I don’t sound like a canned tour director. New word of the day “Grape Racism”. I never thought of myself as a racist…but I guess I might have been. I may give Grenache another try!

QOTD: I’ll pose that one at the Thanksgiving table today. How about this question: If you were wine in a bottle, what would the label say? GaryV, do you have an answer for that one?

Rudy, best thought provoking question yet on WineLib.

A: I’m originally from Idaho, even though I have been thoroughly and irredeemably urbanized I still harbor the sense of community that I have with my hometown, something I have yest to find and I have lived in six western states and two foreign countries.

I received an advanced copy of your documentary as a gift last year. I really enjoyed it, I hope its a big success for you and you continue to make documentaries as they are sadly becoming a lost art form.

    QOTD:

I am from North Yorkshire in England. I take around with me honesty, generosity and good old fashioned common sense. I think we have a ‘can do’ attitude and try not to listen to rules and regulations too much, we just get on with our lives and use our instincts. Of course that’s all the good stuff, we’re a bit lacking in the cosmopolitan sense and probably a bit behind the times. That’s North Yorkshire though, I’m writing this on my break where I work. http://www.thedurhamox.com check it out (website doesn’t do us much justice but the wine list is there)
