line of the day – ‘if I allowed anyone to pay $50 for this wine, you would come to the store and punch me directly in the face’

Meh, guests didn’t improve. Not GV’s fault but that’s the way the cookie crumbles

    great episode!

QOTD 1 Helen Turley is great. I used to really be into her fruit-bombs.

QOTD 2 Last night! I had been away at my company’s annual meeting, my wife had been away on business. We both got home last night and were so happy to be together again (we’ve only been married 4 months) We opened a nice crianza which my wife was ecstatic about. She’s Chinese and hasn’t been into wine for very long, but she is sure that it was the best bottle of wine that she’s ever had. Nothing could make me happier that to have a night like that! We were both totally excited for various reasons.

This was absolutely a fantTAStic 2-parter with some passionate guest tasters and a kind, generous (yet mostly honest) tasting audience.

QOTD 1: Favorite woman in wine? I GOTTA give it up to m’lady Jancis!!
QOTD 2: I once coaxed a very reserved, very attractive lass to reveal a previously unknown side of her personality after popping a German Kabinet Riesling. I had a feeling this not-too-sweet bottle would fit both of our palates. Thank you, wine.

  • Interesting to hear the different impressions of the guests to each wine.

    QOTD 1 Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan
QOTD 2 20th anniversary coming up next week. Maybe I’ll have a new answer for this question then!

Women have certainly made an indelible contribution to wine culture and long may it be so. Hedi Barrett, Mary Elke, Patty Green, Madame. Goisot (forgot her first name, incredible Burgudy whites). Jancis and Karen Mc Neil literally wrote the book. Alice Feiring whose contratianess I lke while disagreeing with many of her viewpoints about Cali wine (went on a coupla dates with her.
    Wonderful woman btw)
On a more personal level, an old flame from days of yore Susan W, rocked my wine world in part by opening me to the joys of riesling.
And of course, the delightful BabsHoney without whom the delights of wine would be considerably dimmed.

Bummer red wines in that bunch. I’ve had a couple Languedoc-Roussillon wines. They are certainly value driven. They do tend to be simple, everyday drinks though. Not that it’s a bad thing.

QOTD #1: My wife. I got really into wine shortly before she got pregnant. Through the whole pregnancy as my wine obsession grew, she “tasted” (not drank) every wine I had. Now our son is here and she is can actually drink the wines with me.

QOTD #2: Champagne. No specific experience, but it’s expensive so it already feels kind of special and naughty, opening it is fun and slightly suggestive, looking at it in the glass is mesmerizing, and drinking it just makes you slide back in your chair and say ohhhhh yeeeaah! Champagne is pretty sexy.

I enjoyed both parts of the Paris shows. It was fun to get 3 perspectives on the wines. I was influenced favorably by tapes of Jancis Robinson in various wine regions around the world. She helped educate me about wine and get me more interested in wine and wine regions.

Great show. This is the first time I have enjoyed a live show this much. The guests were both great (despite the “purple paint” reference … what the heck does purple paint smell/taste like?) and the crowd was respectful enough that I could hear the guests well.

qotd: Jancis Robinson; she’s classy yet not afraid to be opinionated, and I have immense respect for her.

qotd: enjoying a truly thought provoking red Burgundy with my girlfriend on her birthday alone in a beautiful location on a lake in Maine

Not sure but I think Karen McNeil, Leslie Sobrocco, and Jancis.

When Opus One came out they had a tasting in SF with Mondavi and some Rothschild. While we were tasting some guy said of one of the Mondavi, “It’s like sex in a glass”. Overstated of coarse but…

    Wonderful show, Sir Gary!

Kenny – My lady and I had finished the better part of a titillating bottle of Chateauneuf Du Pape, 2006, Domaine De La Janasse. With the remaining bit, we poured it atop our slinky white T-Shirts and rubbed it deep into the fabric. It was a deep, provocative red, and the color simply overtook our simple garb. We proceeded to lay on our backs, side by side, and pour Oxi-Clean all over our stained upper-bodies. And then, in a simple act of romance, we violently rubbed chests as the Oxi-Clean penetrated our T-Shirts and removed the stains from our clothes. Ahhhh… Amore….

QOTD #1 — Alice Feiring; because she’s got her own palate and isn’t afraid to say so. I like her precisely because she often swims against the tide, even though I don’t always agree with her.

QOTD #2 — Heidi Barret. Never met the woman; but ever time a drink a bottle of La Sirena . . .

Follow up thought: you like having guests on the show, so get Alice. Two very opinionated people about wine … I think she could very well by the yin to your yang!

    Hi Gary,

I’m so glad that a few weeks ago Tivo decided to recommend WLTV as a download for us. It, with a little bit of you, has changed our wine world! My wife has now put her powers of online shopping to good use at winelibrary.com, and I’ve just picked up both of your books. Good job on crushing it with a new media outlet to get two new fans.

QOTD 1: Now that I’m digging through past episodes, I see that Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan definitely has the complete package as a wine woman. She has the wine knowledge, knows nerdy science facts about what’s going on in the bottle, and completely rocked the saber opening with minimal spillage.

QOTD 2: If my wife drinks any red wine at a restaurant, it is a lock she’ll be asleep before the first stoplight on the way home. Maybe not sexy, but very endearing.

Good show overall but you need to let your guests speak. They were talking some culture differences and you interrupted. I believe we can learn a lot from other cultures.

QOTD: Winemaker would be Heidi Barrett and Wine Critic, writer, etc., Jancis Robinson.

Sexy wine experience—started out having the tasting menu with wine pairings at the Stage House Inn (around 10 years ago when it was a lot better). We were seated in a small cozy room in front of a fireplace and it began to snow. It made for a very romantic evening later on at home. I rated that night 5 stars out of 5 stars. Actually it was rated XXX. :):):):):)
