Sounds like all the Vaynernation Crazies out there only want someone to throw out some made up tasting notes. If she gave some price points and talked about the nose, (whether accurate or not), you’d all think she was great–an up-and-coming wine maker–instead she was honest and said she liked the wine sans any pretentious wine double-speak. Gary is the one who is evaluating the wine, the rep can’t be objective.
Get over it people!! It was 20 mins of chatter and wine tasting, it’s just an internet blog on wine…make your own decisions…be daring and go out and try the wines for yourself – who cares what Helen or Gary says about it – taste is very individual!!

Will someone please re-post Lisa’s comment or at least paraphrase for the people who did not see it!? I really would like to know what she said. This is by far the most heated commenting on any guest in WLTV history! All the lurkers have come out of the woodwork, although I suppose its not the best time for them to do so. In the end its just wine, but @ Kirstin, these “esoteric” terms are actually useful to people who MAKE wine. I am sure you will never read this because apparently you are too good to post on wine blogs, but your better off on the flag football field.

  • So I guess it’s safe to say that if I want to easily locate this episode in the future, I should only look to the bottom right corner of the screen under the “Favorite Episodes” column?

But seriously, as I stated in my previous post, I do share some criticsms with a lot of people on this board, but I think that the bashing has also gotten a little out of hand. That’s why I left my email in my initial post… If I am bold enough to (semi) anonomously leave a harsh post about someone, I would at least want it to be a 2 way conversation and give that person a chance to respond. And you know what, to my surpise, I’ve had a few emails from people agreeing with me, I had a few very thought provoking emails from people saying what I said was mean, I even had the general manager from HdV email me, but you know what, I read and responded to each email, and took all the criticsm to heart, and I know Helen will be able to do the same.

With that said, where’s Episode 797?

Always interesting trying to control the quality of the “live” episodes outside of the WL office, she was interesting and pleasant for a Valley girl but really should know more about her winery’s price point etc to be a effective rep. Buheler makes a solid Cab, have had the 2005 and it was solid, closer to $22 than %40. winelx.com GO JETS

  • Watch Gary’s first WineLibrary TV episode and see what you all think- Many would not watch another- I remember getting the email from Winelibrary about it and a bunch of us watched it in the office and laughed- not so much at Gary but the fact that this winesalesman was going to talk about wines his store sold-

Yeah pan the wine we have 6 bottles of praise the wine we 60 cases -I didn’t even watch again for another 40 episodes- The elf won me over eventually.

So give the chic a break- Who cares in the end, it is a show about wine hosted by a guy who doesn’t even like wine 😉

Been drinking Buehler wines for ever and they are solid all the time-besides she has a nice rack of lamb!

This comment “smack down” is NOTHING compared to the time that “The Aussie” attacked each and every Vayniac by name (at the time, there were only 14 Vayniacs)…. it was a decidedly unpleasant experience.

And the more disturbing this is Julius picture on the Wine Library website

    that is all….

I didn’t think she did too bad.

Sure, she doesn’t know anything about wine but it’s OK for Gary to have guests like that sometimes. I also happen to think that Gary should taste some specifically flawed wines sometime. We can all learn from this stuff.

P.S. I would be happy to provide some flawed wines for tasting purposes. I live in the land of flawed wines…China. I love to spend between $2 and $30 for a bottle of wine and play “What went wrong?” trying to guess what went wrong in the process of making the wine. (doesn’t matter how much you spend on Chinese wine…it won’t be very good.)

No, but seriously…Helen did OK…she’ll learn more now that she has returned home and gotten a kick in the pants from GV’s crew.

Yes Brandon….I think you’re right… I do remember the acronymn “BLN” being thrown around… and also “KaD” which Gary even wrote on his chalk board … but can’t quite remember what they mean.

Hey Sonoma Guy, with all due respect (I love Sonoma), if a principle in a wine biz sends a representative who is r poorly educated, unprepared, inarticulate, elitist, gets by on an ok rack and a wan smile, never-did=a=real=job =in-her-life-ist, is so incurious about what she sells that she would never buy it, has poor taste in city life and oh by the way, she’s her daughter then proceeds to insult the people on this board–THE GREATEST GROUP OF WINE LOVERS IN THE WORLD!–then yer darn tootin’ I’m gonna go after her. And I’ll be damned if I’ll buy her product.

Based on many of the comments from self-proclaimed Vayniacs, I can’t imagine ever wanting to sit down and have a glass of wine with you. Do you realize how you come across with all of the negative comments? I don’t think I’d want props from any of you…that would mean that I am like you. Wine should bring people together, be part of an enjoyable evening not a basis for trashing someone who was just sharing with us. Let it go.

  • I think what has everyone so irked is Helen initially presented herself as being part of the industry, and as a representative of the winery, yet the industry speak and knowledge isn’t there. This is akin to an Andretti offspring not being able to drive a manual and operate a clutch. Yes this is completley different than an industry outsider such as Tim Ferriss, Jake/Amir & College Humor peeps etc. who clearly profess they don’t know much about wine actually not knowing much about wine; you don’t expect anything from them.

@Scotty if you’ve read “Crush It” you’d know why I said that. The whole book is about building [a] personal brand and using tools to engage and have a two-way communication with your customers/followers.

I watched the whole episode a second time just to validate my initial thoughts, and they haven’t changed. In fact one could theorize that she WAS coached on what to say…the whole exchange on using social media etc. *almost* sounded like it’s from prior conversation with Gary when they were trying to find the venue to film at. If she’s such a social media power-user what’s up with a total of 69 Tweets going back to September 9, of 2009? I also think the reason why she’s looking so intently at Gary is she’s trying to learn from him on the spot, so kudos for wanting to learn but you can’t build an airplane in the air.

It’s unfortunate because this winery has such a historied past, Heidi Barrett was the first outside winemaker; and I’d be curious in her response to this. http://buehlervineyards.com/story.html

This episode was taped on Decmeber 3-5 because Helen tweeted she was heading to NYC to visit Wine Library TV http://twitter.com/HelenBuehler/status/6308244865 …so it seems the whole trip was for this purpose (and to visit/shop in the city) and it’s too bad more preperation and research wasn’t done into what the show would be like and what would be expected of her. It’s not as if Gary hasn’t ever had a winemaker on before talking about their wines.

Also it appears her brother Page is in the industry and would be infinatley better to represent the family business: http://buehlervineyards.com/people.html The harvest and crush should have been completed by early Decmeber.

I know for certian (from another site/blogs/forums) that Peter Wellington (Wellington Vineyards) and Scott Harvey (Scott Harvey Wines) and others DO pay for wines from other vineyards/winemakers so they can try new and different things.

If her TRUE passion is traveling, then do that and see the rest of the world. Again I think Helen is articulate, and I hope she uses this experience to grow. I also like how she doesn’t want to waste any of the wine she likes, I’m the same way.

PS-At the 9:10 mark Gary says “you have to care about the customers”; in reference to a talk he gave in Napa a few years ago. Guess I’m just a “pathetic wine groupie”

PPS-I always add a hyperlink to my Twitter on my handle, so I’m not hiding for those that want to @me a reply.

  • Good episode Gary, I had to skip through some of the banter to get to the tasting, but overall a decent effort. Did we ever get a price on the Buehler Cab?

The guest sure was throwing back the leftovers of the Chard. She definitely prettied up the show.

QOTD: The Jets should hire whoever they want to teach whatever they want. They’re going to need it. They may want to hire a shrink with how Schizophrenic the season has been.

And what’s with saying she has no taste in cities? She has traveled the world and doesn’t like Paris or SF – so what? I’ve traveled extensively myself and have been to Paris many times – it certainly is not on the top of my list of favorite cities, overrated, expensive, rude people – haven’t been to Berlin but I do love SF and Chicago.

And Sonoma is most definitely a superior wine region compared to Napa–great wines for A LOT less money. You pay for the Napa name, not worth it.

I agree with you about Sonoma. And it’s a far more interesting place to vist thatn Napa.
So that makes it all the worse that this condescending Napa chick basically treats her audeience (us_ contemputously with her lack of prepaaration, incuriosity, and passionlessness then her mom comes on and insults us for calling a spade a spade. Well, it’s worth noting.
