  • Thanks bfr1028.

QOTD: I like snow after it has settled, I guess nobody like a blizzard.

  • Thank you cellarrat5. here it is courtesy of Garyvee and bfr1028

Question of the day? What do you think of Snow? 1st thought? Pls pass this on and repeat to peeps as this will get lower and lower

I gotta call a spadey, spade, spade here….that analogy was not one of your better ones. I got it, but, it was subpar for you. Thanks for the show. I'll check out a Banyul. Sounds fun and who doesn't like tiramasou.

SB – I find it impossible to go against Manning. But, he/they can be beat. More like, they can be stopped. I'm uneasy about this, but: Saints 34, Colts 31.

  • Mike_Nelson

Gary I am so excited about the frequency of the shows you are doing. I am pumped about the wines being from different regions I have heard little or nothing of.

    Keep up the good work!

By the way, don't you think Hulk Hogan should get more credit since he kept his career going far after he stopped wrestling?

  • It's just a game, have a glass of and smile.

  • Feartec

I would love to get the wife's take on this, unfortunately in Japan the wine selection isn't great if you aren't a millionaire. Basically, I'm boned.

  • johnfarrin

No, I'm NOT going to go thru 800 odd episodes to research this but I think that we have a precedent here. I personally don't ever remember an episode that didn't end with a QOTD. I think that it must have had something to do with GV taping multiple episodes AND concentrating on changing his shirt before each one that he totally had one of my senior moments 🙂

  • SeanieBoy

The second one. A more serious wine, but only average.

  • Cool_Dave

I just have to say a Michelan star chef is worth a cord pile of CEO's.

  • Big week for shows and the chalk board is totally right, OH YEAH.

QOTD: Colts haven't lost when they have played the entire game. The Colts defense has been one of the best at points per game besides the two games they didn't show up. I think a hindered Freeny will make this closer than it would normally be since you can key on Mathis. Colts 34 Saints 30

  • larbear

I would like to share my thought that late harvest Grenache is great with a cigar. It doesn?t beat Louis XVIII but I can?t afford that pairing more than once or twice a year.

  • A dumb Rhein king

lol. Yes we are; whether we're pissed off … or not 😉

NQOTD: Even though I don't follow football, a little voice inside of me wants the Saints to lose because they beat the Vikings, but whatev.

  • jaredlevy

I like this new comment forum format, much more “Apple” if that makes any sense.
Gary said there are really no other good matches for dessert wine and chocolate.
    Um…Tannat?

    QOTD: Oh…wait. 🙁

  • A dumb Rhein king

b-t-dubs … for anyone wondering aboot the question of the day … Gary asked one earlier in the comments.

  • A dumb Rhein king

    Randomness …

I almost would like to see a rolling thread at the bottom rather than the Twitter reactions. Imho, the tweets are better in the right nav … not really as a center piece item.

Another idea?? Of course! Have a way to log into and view Cork'd on this site with Disqus. That way I can quickly access what wines I've had recently; seems to come up every now and then … just a thought. Maybe make the site more configurable so that users can add components and move them around.

  • Pat__B

I feel educated beyond my intelligence. Thanks Gary.

  • I was hoping you were going to ask us what our favourite desert wine ever was! In my case, I was stunned (in a good way) by an Australian desert wine – Baileys of Glenrowan Founder Series Liquer Tokay NV. At around US$20, this is also flying way below the radar. Lots of other great desert wines made in this region of NorthEastern Victoria as well. Guess not many make it to the States?

  • mclurker

I love how you wear your feelings for the Jets on your sleeve, Gary.

    I'm going 20-17, Colts.

  • Maybe you could consider moving to Hong Kong – a tax free wine paradise! Just a few hours away in a plane.

  • Dominic C.

I have to say, I kind of enjoy seeing the defeated GaryV. Though, being a Cubs fan, defeat is something you need to enjoy and as Conan O'Brien once said, “You know you hit rock bottom if a Cubs fan is showing sympathy for you.”

    Perhaps, misery loves company, ne?

I'm going to call it 3-7 Colts.

    Hello Mott! 🙂

  • audiofan

Gary – I love sports too, and was somewhat bummed when my team lost in the playoffs, but you have a new baby girl and life is good. By the time she's old enough to share that glass of wine with you, the LAST thing you'll remember (or care about) is who won the Super Bore in 2010. And trust me, bro, she'll get there FAST! Peace.

  • bfr1028

Malbec and Chocolate Chip Cookies dont Pair Well!! 🙁

  • QOTD: Snow 1st thought…We're glad that we moved somewhere warm that rarely gets snow, but we miss NY. Also, snowball fights!

Liked the show…quick, and concise. Red dessert wines (meh). Last night we had a 2008 Dornfelder which was pretty good. Young, and fruit forward, with a nice distribution of sweetness, but low alcohol (8%). Definitely a grape to keep an eye out for. Another one of those 'under the radar' wines. Cheers!

  • Phil G

No QOTD? Have a great weekend, enjoy the snow!

  • DPnCali

LOL. The end of the episode had me crackin up. That is all….kthxbai!

  • DPnCali

Oh and about the chalk board…please, Hogan was the man! Did Macho body slam Andre the Giant?! No, he didn't. That is all….kthxbai!

  • NIce blog with a nice video of Banyuls Tasting ? Episode #812. Enjoyed watching it. Keep on posting some more blogs like this.

  • Rich

I love this show… I've been drinking wine since the late 80's, and this is the first time I've actually found out what Banyuls was! Thanks Gary! I've had a late-Syrah dessert wine, but not late-Grenache. But for the Superbowl? Saints 31, Colts, 27. I heard Wayne is kind of injured, along with Freeney who is injured equals 2 top Colts players injured, thus my guess. It is an 11 man, team game. 😉

QOTD: I live for snow. I'm from CA, and I wait all year just to go snowboarding once or twice if I'm lucky. My ideal honeymoon would be in Whistler, BC Canada. Snowboarding all day, cook some amazing meals at night, hang out by a fire a drink some VINO Bitches! (uncalled for, but I had to say it)

  • Domdomi

In the same “spirit” of Banyuls, u could find Maury AOC, or some wine desert i tasted like Pedro jimenez Solera in Spain, perfect with dark chocolate, Or some Port's but and only but, absolutly vintage, and absolutly 20 years old.
    Cheers ….

  • Michael C in MKE

It’s pretty when it falls, then it just gets in my way.

  • YoungDave

Banyuls is a great, highly underexplored category, and I'm glad you attacked it today. I serve a 1989 Grand Cru Banyuls by-the-glass at the restaurant and it does massively well with a chocolate pot de creme dessert with a hint of espresso and housemade cardamom-flavored whipped cream. Cheers.

  • Christian Jessen

    Hi Gary !

Gattya …. never tell a frenchman Banyuls lies in the South West of France …. You have all the Pyrenean Mountains in between. As a matter of fact the region lies not to far away from Barcelona/Spain on the frensh-spanish boarder and on the Mediteranean Sea.
Very beautiful area btw …. with a lot culture – Catalan Region, I think it is called – home of famous artists such as Picasso and Dali ….

Typical for a Banyuls or Maury, which could be considered the french answer to port, is the “goût du rancio” – which is a typical, almost rancid type taste. What you did not mention was the fact that – alternatively to ageing in barrel, comonly the wines are aged in glass balloons – outside … thus it matures in all types of weather – from extreme hot to extreme cold – until it is bottled … There are a few stuning pictures on the net portraying that …

Amongst the fortified wines of the Spanish Halfpeninsula, some of the Atlantic and Mediterranean Isles – a real treat !! For – as you mentioned correctly – small money !!

Looking forward to enjoying you tasting-comments on : Marsala and/or Madeira !!

    All the best …

    CJ

p.s. : I have a case of 1996 and 1997 each lying around somewhere in my cellar – and no clue when to start opening them …. maybe in 30 years ;-)))

  • Gonçalo Correia

Thank you for “one more expanding palate tip”. As a portuguese i´m learning a lot about the wines out side of my contry, thanks to you.
Do you know why a magazine such as WA dosen´t taste port wine for more than 2 years?

    Gonçalo, Lisboa.

  • JasonGonzales

This edit option doesn't work. I can't fix my typos!

  • JasonGonzales

    Gary,

X > Randy the Macho Man Savage > Hulk Hogan

    The Ultimate Warrior = X

  • Thomas_DK

As othes have mentiones, Maury is the deal! it could be fun to se a show with the different types of wines from the app.

  • StevenL

Very Informative- never even seen a Banyuls. Great Match with Chocolate- Pedro X.

  • Anonymous

I would take another sloppy/lucky wins by the Saints! Better than a well-played defeat!

  • Anonymous

I can’t really argue with you, I was just sayin that they didn’t win very convincingly….at home. If the Vikes can put up 500 plus yards on their defense, that doesn’t bode well for them playin the Colts.Still, the Saints are playing in the Superbowl, and I do hope they win.

  • Thanks Gary, I'v never tried it! I can't wait.

Check my recipe pick for the superbowl ,Mozzarella Tomato and Basil Skewers http://bit.ly/8ZntOW, I can feel the LOVE!

  • Waits

    Everybody!!!!!

  • Altboy97

Definitely agree the QOTD should have been comments on our favorite dessert wines. I nominate Tobin James Cellars “Liquid Love”, late harvest Zin from Paso Robles. Great stuff and what a great name (way to crush it Toby).

  • Waits

White…. But nice. And after a while, no thanks. A bit like those Australian Shiraz’ s
delicious at first, but then it gets a bit too much……. It’s just water, and i mean that with the greatest sense of respect.. ! Snow that is

  • Waits

    He-Man Rules. R-U-L-E-S! Period!!!!!!!!

  • missatiejacket

I love Banyuls. You know what other dessert wine I love? A good Malmsey Madeira. I think you know, Gary, where I'm going with that. Yup, it's time for me to start bugging you again. Thanks for another good episode.

  • johnr

They are all over at Cinderellawine.com complaining about the “deal” offer last night!

  • WineWoman

Banyuls–good substitution for Port, though many would say there is no substitution for Port, but Banyuls is something nice to change it up in the dessert wine category.

Woke up to the tease for your Today Show appearance yesterday. Nice way to start the day watching your wine picks for the SuperBowl.
