line of the day – ‘The Vanilla Villain might have to make an appearance’

Didn’t think I was going to like this guest but he turned out knowledgeable and passionate…and did a good job trying to market obviously overpriced wines

    Damn top 12

  • NY Pete

no Vayniac discount on those prices Jason?

Agree with the FX and fake drama in most cases. I think I really got into it because my SO loves movies and syfy so much I was infected. And the fact that I hadn’t been to a movie in a year or two.

  • Suck it. Gotta give Cornell some love too. Right after I left WL, I found out they were ranked 25th in the nation, so I wish I gave them some props

  • wayno da wino

    PA Vino???? WHO DAT????

  • A very nice episode with a young man who seems to be energetic and passionate about his job. Good luck.

And you were right, well, I didn't vomit but my jaw dropped to the ground when I heard the prices. His answer to your question as to “why” should have been easy instead of poo-pooing “I don't know.” It's all about supply and demand and he wants to try and recoup some of his investment. Nothing wrong with that. As the saying goes, “How do you make a small fortune in the wine business? Start with a large fortune.”

Anyway, I will try and seek out that Merlot. And yes, the VaynerNation has your back my man.

    Cheers!

  • Didn't crack the top ten today, but we never do. Overall, this was a decent episode. Jason M., thanks for speaking up enough for us to actually hear you.

QOTD: During yesterday's game, we popped a bottle of 2007 Jumilla that probably wasn't ready to be drunk, but showed quite nicely nevertheless. I guess that was the most recent shock we've had, since we knew all along that the Saints were going to win. It's times like these that we wish we were going to Mardi Gras. Cheers!

We all wiggle our mouses sometimes.

  • Yea, I felt like a little bit of a jerk for not having a better answer prepared. Especially because I was an Econ major… Shows you how much I really took in from those classes… But between French oak, our rotary fermenter, and various consulting enologists, the costs add up. I don't want to make it sound like all PA wine is expensive, because there are definitely producers in the <$15 range. Also, just an FYI for everyone, our lowest priced wine is our Traminette (Gewurtztraminer hybird) that sells for $18.50. Another varietal that is really doing well here

  • Can't believe he only mentioned Nova basketball. They beat my Griz in the D1AA national championship (football).

Glad he knows the retails… He must have to pay for wine.

QOTD: Probably how rude some of the patrons were in the tasting room this weekend. I was tempted to take this old lady's glass and bank it off her dome.

  • cellarrat5

Decent show, beginning to come around on the other 46. There is a lot to offer that myself and other wine nerds here in CA have not heard about. I can?t say I have tried anything from PA, but that merlot and Gary's reaction to it gave me a little bit of a merloner (unintentional merlot inspired boner).

QOTD: I was at the Unified Wine Grape Symposium last month and was SHOCKED by some of the mid Atlantic wine that I tried. I also had a Cuvee from Idaho! I didn?t even know they grew table grapes there, let alone Vanifera. Also NY came through with two killer Gerwerts and a few Rieslings that blew my mind, major thunder.

  • I feel ya, buddy. There's been plenty of times when I've been shocked at peoples reactions in tasting rooms

  • What are the terroir of Penn? Very interesting that new areas can pop up, and 30 old vines, sounds very cool. No Pennsylvainian wines in Sweden so can you send me a case of the Merlot 🙂

QOTD: That' I can't reveal here.

  • NY Pete

QOTD … the giants beating the pats a few SB's ago …

  • cellarrat5

interesting, where is the hybrid from do you know? Did it Hybradize in PA, or did you get a stock from UC Davis? I would have liked to see Gary's reaction to that one.

  • johnfarrin

QOTD: This is just too easy. The pricepoint of $55.00 on your Ameritage! In fact, with the wine world in recession mode the $38.00 price on a 90+ pt wine is outrageous also. I am chagrined that wineries are buying the 2005 philosophy that more expensive means better quality. The only people pushing that philosophy were the psuedo-wine consultants who knew more about consumer spending habits than wine.

  • laurieinvt

Good job, Jason! Pennsylvania! Who'da thunk?! Nice to see a good merlot produced in the neighborhood.

Yup, we need a Chris Mott Wine Student Association and Mouse Wiggler T-shirt! 😉

QOTD: That I'm going to be a grandmother! oy.

  • NY Pete

good for you Laurie … my wife welcomes you to the clubhouse.

  • We have a continental climate, but it tends to vary a lot from year to year (for example, there will be no red wines from our 09 vintage, too much rain, so Gino just threw the grapes out…). People always like to make the statement that “we are on the same parallel as Bordeaux, but I don't know if that has any real impact… The growing season tends to be a little shorter because of the weather, so that's why early ripening varietals, like Merlot, tend to do a little better. We can end up getting a lot of rain near harvest time, so that can be a problem for ripening, and also diseases (that's why some hybrids, like Traminette, do better as well). On our vineyard specifically, I believe the soil is mostly sandstone, so we really get a very large mineral aspect in pretty much all our wines, especially the Sauv. Blanc. Makes some very interesting style wines, very unique.

  • It was a cross that was done at, you guessed it, Cornell of all places. It was a cross of Gewurtz and Johannes Sevye. They originally intended to make a table grape with that Gewurtz spiciness, but it ended up being more cold hardy and disease resistant, and the wines it made weren't to shabby, so they're starting to use it more and more in cool climate type places like the Finger Lakes and PA

  • laurieinvt

    Thanks!

  • castello

I think it was intentional on your part. Laffing out loud!

  • Good show Gary! Looking forward to more “other 46” …I'm glad that you kept a guest down to 1 show, let him talk, you imparted info too…really tight, nice work. Though, wanted to throw something out there, I thought a field blend just meant that you tossed the grapes together at the crush, not necessarily grapes all grown together.

    QOTD: I'm hardly ever shocked.

  • Hahahaha, fair enough

  • ChicagoMatt

QOTD: The freakin' onside kick to start the 2nd half last night. Ugh.

  • allanj

Exciting episode. Great guest. Again a region not that well known to say the least.
I applaud you for bringing the spotlight on it. Great.

Qotd: Shocked me bad: Avatar, for being such a poor a movie!
Qotd: Shocked me good: Last year i (was lucky) had some 1995 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill…. Freakin' amazing. BIIIIIGGGG tannins, but that inner core of sweet fruit was just like heaven…. i am not kidding

    Cheers everybody.

  • Great guest/great show. Definitely going to have to take a trip down and hit the wine trail to have me some Merlot!

QOTD: Like many, the game last night…

  • allanj

    Right on man!!!

  • Congrats!

  • Way to hang tough Jason M! You know you are going into the circle of fire letting GV cold-call rate your peeps wines to an international audience…I always figure folks are in a cold sweat every time Gary raises the glass in front of them. I'm glad that Merlot rocked it out! But was fully expecting a 55 bone Bordeaux blend to get bashed….sorry! It would have to be the equivalent of Pennsylvania Petrus to command that price.

Being from Virginia, I love the whole concept of finding the right varietals to match to our mid-Atlantic terroir…and glad to hear that Merlot may be finding a place in PA. Back the hell up Punxsutawney Phil, here comes the Merlove!

Shocking? That after our foot and a half of snow sleet and hail last week, we are getting another few inches tomorrow. Old Man Winter is punishing the Mid-Atlantic!

  • Thanks man. Let me know when you're back in Philly and lets make a Philaldephia Vayniac Offline happen!

  • Word to that shock Cellarrat. Want a bigger one? Every state in the entire US now has at least one winery producing vino. Yep, all 50, even Alaska.

  • Merloner = greatest wine term I have ever heard. Glad to hear people opening up to wine from “The Other 46”

  • Can't believe more snow is coming…

Yea, what can I say. I brought a 100% Cab to the show also, but I thought the Ameritage would be a little more interesting because it has a little story with the Sangio in the blend, and because Gary has been bashing Cabs lately, but I have a feeling the Cab might have shown a little better. Especially with the limited time to breathe. Either way, as Gary always says, “I didn't make it, you didn't make it…”. Just glad he liked the Merlot!

  • That can be a nickname for people that blindly hate merlot because of “Sideways.”

  • drt999

Show's been “in the can” for a bit, huh? Well, I was pleasantly shocked last night. The Saints pulled it off! And go, 'real wine' from PA & NC!

  • Yea, for all your sakes, I was trying my best to keep the show short and sweet. It even turned out LONGER than I wanted it too!

  • FingerLakesRVResort

I have watched the Finger Lakes go through many of the same growing pains Jason and GV mentioned. That said the prices of the Rieslings and Gevertz has come down to where they are very fair for the quality and in some cases a deal. Reds are so dependant on a real good summer that on average they seldom merit the prices(2007 was a real good year for reds however). Great job Jason.

QOTD: Shocked that GV hasn't done a WLTV epp from a Finger Lakes winery like Wiemer or Dr. Frank's. Only a 4-5 hour trip from the dirty Jerz.

  • Wow, Jason knew the prices of his own wines……oops didn't mean to set the bar that low….

Jason, thanks sooo much for coming prepared knowing about the show and sharing your wine knowledge.

QOTD: Last thing that shocked me would have to be how bad most of the Super Bowl ads are now getting. They all try to go over the top and most of them miss. Example for me, all of the Bud/Bud Light ads just plain sucked and are getting old and lame. Go Daddy? We've seen the same ad for the last 5 years and all I get from you running those is increased prices every year for my domains etc. (although kudos for pointing us to your website for more).

The best ads for me: Snickers add “Betty White” [go to their website for another one with Aretha Frankin that looks to have been planned to run but didn't (at least I didn't see it)]; the Google ad was great, and told an amazing story in 30 seconds with no words and using the “intelligence” of the search engine; the Doritos ads were funny, and what the Bud ads used to be; Kia ad was great (one with the toys partying it up in Vegas); the Audi “Green Police” was well done (and I'm an anti-tree hugger…..there I said it).

What was your favorite ad? Mine was the Snickers.

  • Hermann Wiemer's Rieslings are the REAL DEAL

  • castello

QOTD Seeing the “best quarterback ever” throw the ball to the wrong guy to lose the Stuper Bowl.
Thanks for chiming in Jason. Most guests just go away. GV please taste the blend again. A guy who makes a killer Merlot in Pa. isn't going to make a bunko/plunko Meritage. As with many Italian blends it may be austere and need some good cheese to bring the thunder. Yes, I'm saying it. Your palate couldn't handle going from a huge wine to an elegant one. That is why we go from white to red etc.

  • True that. What's the story on that Sangio anyway? I think that's the first time I've ever even heard reference to an East Coast Sangio. You guys use it just to blend?

And in terms of more snow….someone should have shot that damn groundhog before he even got out of the hole.

  • jenna35

enjoyable show. Good job Jason. I was planning on going to up to New York State vineries this summer, but I will be sure to check out what Pennsylvania has to offer.

  • Hey now, be nice. It's tough being up there in the hot seat. I was pissing myself all week hoping I didn't sound like an ass.

Definitely agree about the Super Bowl ads. Betty White and Abe Vigoda was great. Although, there was one before the game even started with a guy in a clown costume that comes downstairs, steps on a unicorn doll, and starts screaming and scaring all the little kids, thought that was great. Although I forget what they were selling, so maybe not… Game >>> Ads this year, though

  • castello

I avoid adds at all costs. Adds are BAD!

  • drt999

True; if GV can make it to Williamsport, PA, he can make it to the Finger Lakes! (You just needed to make a right on PA 220 and then a left on NY rte 17, Gary!)

  • cellarrat5

I hate to sound like a “Yes Man” but really? you think after tasting thousands of wines all over the world he cant handel going from a good Merlot to a “bunko” blend? You may have been watching longer than I have, but if he cant handel that, he should not call this the thunder show.
