line of the day – ‘The Vanilla Villain might have to make an appearance’

Didn’t think I was going to like this guest but he turned out knowledgeable and passionate…and did a good job trying to market obviously overpriced wines

Waiting to watch it on tv.. will be a few more minutes

  • allanj

    Allrightythen!

  • castello

We'll have to buy tap water in a bottle for 4 bucks to stay hydrated. Next they'll close the bathrooms to keep us safe.

  • Liked this episode – very curious to try the Merlot if I can aquire it. But way to be honest Gary and not give wines a pass just because the guest is there. Appreciate that you can pan something in a very polite but honest way.

BTW, I think it was really cool to watch you guys tape the episode on UStream first, then watch the final. Please continue to do that.

  • castello

How do you watch it on tv?

  • allanj

    Lol

  • castello

At least the poop would be wrapped in 1000 dollar bills.

  • bfr1028

Its available on Tivo's but a week behind or i download the quicktime version and move it to the tivo and bingo real winelibrary TV

  • carlo10

haha, i love seeing this guy trying to backtrack in some spots…i think this is how i would act if i were on the show though lol

  • scottEJ

    Thanks guys.

QOTD: Peyton Manning sulking off the field and not shaking hands with the Saints guys.

  • XpensiveWino

Jason, great job. It's nice to see the Vaynernation being exposed to some more domestic wine! There are so many great wineries in states like New York, Virginia, and Missouri that just don't get enough love. A little more domestic coverage would be appreciated. Now if I could just get my domestic sparkler show!?

  • A dumb Rhein king

Great to see the other 46 make an appearance and a good one too. You totally need to make the Mott t's, Gary. I'll buy one if they look good.

QOTD: That you can't own hens in Elk River (borderline suburbia and rural MN), unless you have 5 acres. I understand needing neighbor consent and all, but why completely outlaw it?? Even Minneapolis residents can own chickens with neighbor consent.

  • carlo10

i really want to ride the katy trail in missouri and try the wines there…have you, or anyone else in the vaynernation?

  • carlo10

QOTD: i was walking home today in the snow. i had my hood up and was focused on just getting to my house from school. out of nowhere a little dog came out and started chasing me and barking me and jumped on my leg. i jumped like a german shepard was about to attack me, and then realized it was a dog the size of my foot.

  • carlo10

    did you ever play sports?

I think this is the best some Pennsylvania wines could hope for… boy, those price-points might be problematic; dozens of outstanding Chards, Merlots, Bord blends, et. al. up here in WA state for less. But, I wish Jason (and his employer) much luck, he seems to be in it for all the right reasons.
QOTD: Manning's interception last night. Shocked, but in no way appalled!

  • adrums

    The guy has no class.

  • SF BAY SWIMMER

Stepping out of a lurkerdom, but it's a slow process posting a comment. Jason was a terrific guest and the show was well paced with a nice catch by Mott to get the Meritage out of the way to keep the guest in view. Wondering if Jason has visited Dr. Konstantin Frank's winery in the Finger Lakes.

How can I find WLTV live on ustream?
QOTD: reading @slave2thevine saying he had an 86 Allegro Vineyards Cadenza. From Missouri (a fellow other 46), had a few of their too sweet wines, some are pretty good. Had a couple of whites I liked, haven't found a red from MO I like.

  • allanj

Welcome man, great you've come out to play…..

  • adambunnell

The guest really had a good young feel to him, and he didn't jump all over the show. He did handle the criticism well and seems like he is going to be a big part of the future of Penn wines at that winery. I agree that he should bring back the bachelorette parties(what do they hate money and women over there?), but I do think he would be a phenomenal tasting room host. I could see him having enough knowledge to fulfill an advanced drinker's appetite for information and questions, but young enough to slide in with those his own age. Good guy, great show, and I think although the wines didn't show well except for the merlot that someone like him will be good to have on the team that is working to improve them.

  • Great show guys!! Its always interesting so learn about these “off the beaten path” wineries.

    P.S. Love your shirt Gary!

QOTD: Still Cant believe the Saints won….I am so happy for them!!

  • bwine

Nice show, and good job by Jason. I live a couple of miles from Penns Woods, and am a frequent visitor for tastings and to help with harvest. I've had the 2004 Ameritage and it was pretty solid; they do need air, though. The Sauvignon Blanc is remarkable. They're having wine and chocolate tastings this weekend for Valentine's Day; I'll have to go grab some of the Merlot Reserve.

QOTD: 25 inches of snow in Wilmington, Delaware.

  • Neil

QOTD: Like other posters, the Saints pulled one out in Miami!

“Ameritage” from Pennsylvania at $55 US Bones, gimme a break.

  • SF BAY SWIMMER

I loved Dr. Frank's Rkatsiteli and wish Gary would include it on the show alongside a Georgian wine. I've yet to see any Georgian wines featured on the show. At least have one before show 1,000.

QOTD: I won a container of Hammer Energy Gel at my swim meet this weekend. I had thought I had got touched about, but I had a surge at the end to take the heat.

    GARY!!!
    Jason!!

    Great show…
Wanting to try that Merlot now… 🙂

QOTD: I get shocked often…sometimes by wonderful things..but unfortunately, lately..Im shocked by horrible things… Read the newspaper today, it just made me cry…such inhumanity… On that note, I think I will open a bottle of wine! LOL

xo Love ya Gary…thanks for taking me away from the horrible things. 😉

  • ERog

Gary, I may be in the minority, but I wish you would go back to not scoring the wines when you have a guest from the winery. I think people still would have gotten the point that you really liked the merlot even without scoring it.

QOTD: Just to try something different, I went looking for an under $17ish white Bordeaux, and I was completely blown away. I appreciate what NZ sauv blanc did to get me interested in wine, but, wow, I've had fun exploring old world whites lately.

  • boomy13

The last thing that shocked me was hearing that PA produces good wine. The second to last thing to shock me was the interception thrown by P. Manning.

  • bfr1028

I think ill go get a bottle or two… would make a nice drive for the day!! You know we have some wine here in CT as well though i havent tried to much of it..

  • FingerLakesRVResort

Great to have a guest so involved in the comments. Oh yeah, 'Cuse 88, Big Red 73……

  • If Gary makes the “Chris Mott Association of Wine Students” shirts, I expect a cut of the profit! Hahah, jk, but I WILL buy one!

  • DionysusPrincess

Jason, you have been my favorite guest by far…I've started looking for flights to PA for spring break 😉

QOTD: One of my third graders burst out singing Pit Bull today…can't remember multiplication, but knows every word to Hotel Room Service 🙂

  • castello

    Scores are overated any way.

  • howitzer

I liked Jason and thought he did a great job representing his company and wine. It's obvious he has seen the show and has a passion for wine and the business. I also like that he is reading and responding to the comments. He showed class by sticking up for Helen and providing a link where she was able to explain what happened on that episode from her perspective for those who want to check it out. I hope his appearance on the show will result in lots of wine sales for his company. The Merlot sounds great and I will look for it but I am guessing it is not available here in Georgia…
QOTD: The devastation in Haiti and the ongoing situation has shocking.

  • late_start

I'm happy he knows the price 😉

  • jmbujz

It was FANTASTIC to see a (third, I think) PA winery reviewed Gary! I'm sure you know this but, there are some really fantastic wineries here in PA owned/run by really knowledgeable and passionate winemakers. Please please please PLEASE don't let the plcb (PALiquorControlBoard) sour you from what PA wineries have to offer.
From my experience, CabFranc and Riesling appear to be very well suited for the PA terrior.

  • Yes! Bringin out my first lurker! I have in fact visted Dr. Frank's winery. Makes some real good stuff, and he was a HUUUUGE driving force behind Finger Lakes quality wines. Fun Fact, in one of my viticulture and enolgy classes, I was in a lab with Dr. Frank's 2 granddaughters!

  • Thanks so much for the compliments! Have been rocking out in the tasting room now for a while, and it's definitely fun! You can definitely be sure we are working real hard to improve our quality. We are going to release our 07 reds later in the Spring, and I almost wish I waited until then to bring em to Gary because they will be gooooooood.

  • SamKw

A Vayniac reporting from Cornell here! So I'm guessing you must be Class of '09?
Man, wish I could work in the wind industry after I graduate (which is pretty soon!).
    Keep up the good work!
By the way, did you take any viticulture classes while you were here?

QOTD: Just heard that two of my friends, who married each other while they were here at Cornell, got divorced. Really rather sad and surprising, because I never figured they'd have problems.

  • allanj

What sort of music do you play when out on a job? old, new? Just curious! ; )
    Probably new….

  • I know, the price point kinda sucks. Email me at jason [at] pennswoodswinery [dot] com and I'll try to get you some at a special rate if you want to try it

  • Not a chance

  • Thanks so much! Shoot me an email at jason [at] pennswoodswinery [dot] com and let me know when you'll be here and I'll make sure to give you a tour of the vineyard!

  • bfr1028

Thanks Jason for coming on the show.. it was refreshing having and energenic youthfull guest with good facts and being able to understand a guest and having the volume on the guest good as well (Nice Job Mott) Im going to look up your brand and come see you sometime and im sure to leave with a bottle or 2 or 12..:)

That being said i think gary went easy on you on the last bottle since you were there….I think if it was just gary tonight and no guests the last wine would have been torn apart harder than it was.He looked like he was trying to find somthing nice to say about it.

QOTD:The last thing that shocked me was hearing that most people would go green if it was made easy for them to do!!

  • Yep, class of '09.

Took Intro to Wines in the Hotel school with prof. Mutkoski, and Wines and Vines in the Ag school with Prof. Arnink

  • howitzer

I agree. I just had a wine that Robert Parker scored a 91 that for me was just meh…
I am sure it was technically a good wine but just didn't do anything for my palate. GV is right, trust your own palate.
