line of the day – ‘The Vanilla Villain might have to make an appearance’

Didn’t think I was going to like this guest but he turned out knowledgeable and passionate…and did a good job trying to market obviously overpriced wines

Whatever is in demand… Iknow that was a lame answer but its true. For me Rock and Blues bring the THUNDER!!

Back on 11/24/09! Boehiem said, after playing NC that Cornell was the best team they had played.

You're just my kind of guy. I think we could host a great party together…. ; )
I know what you're sayin' about demand, you have to think that way as a DJ, I'm not much of a modern music fan though. Prefer the older stuff. I was born too late… But you have to at least keep up to date on the latest hits. That's what you've got to do…
Is there any real money in the business?

Question for Jason Or Gary Or the Nation….. Why is it that is seems there is one particular wine that is allways garenteed to give me a headache after just one glass, when i dont have this problem with most others Why????

I came so close to taking the Wines & Vines course this semester (I even pre-enrolled for it), but it had to be ditched at the last minute because it had a time conflict with another class I needed to take. *sigh* It just means that I'll read up in my own time and taste wine out of my own pocket, which I'm more than willing to do now that I've been bitten by the “wine bug.”

  • Michael C in MKE

Really good guest. I've enjoyed the comments he's leaving, lots of good dialogue.

Hey GV! I don't know if you've ever worked a tasting room in your life but Bachelor/Bachlorette parties are often massive a-holes who ruin tours and tastings for the other people who might be interested in learning about a product.

QOTD: Last night Lady Gaga?! WLTV disappoints me.

    Good job, Jason.

    Good show.

    Hey Gary/Jason,

Great show..It was great seeing someone younger along side of Gary who actually knows quite a bit about wine. Great job Jason.

QOTD: Recently I've been shocked at the amount of close-minded people online. It's a long story so I won't get into it 🙂 Take care guys.

  • Yea, sadly the wine is only available out of our tasting room and restuarants in the area. If you or anyone else wants to place an order, I can try and work something out, even give you guys the Vayniac discount. Email me at jason [at] pennswoodswinery [dot] com and I will try and hook you guys up. PA state laws are definitely a pain in the ass, but if you want some wine, we'll make it work.

  • Everyone should go to www [dot] freethegrapes [dot] com. Definitely time to rework some laws…

  • fatherthechair

It's pretty suspenseful to anticipate your reaction to the wines in front of a guest who represents the winery– good job being frank without coming off as insensitive. Great job Jason. QOTD: Recent lip/microphone/guitar incident, many musicians out there will know what I'm talking about.

  • Awesome! Definitely keep exploring and checking out lots of different stuff. Email me (jason [at] pennswoodswinery [dot] come) and let me know your address and I'll try and get some “samples” sent to you to help you “study”!

Shameless marketing MBA type. So we know his motivation, but nice guy. He did very well. excellent.
Pa wine? wow. snow plows and vines? smile. I'm open. So his price points are for coming to the winery and the experience. People pay premium for the experience. The backbone of the micro-winery, you know this, mr distributor? i hope. people come for the experience and memory. If I give them a memory, they will pay $30. A story they might pay $35. haha. But that is off the grid of distributors. smile.
This was a GREAT step outside of the distributor world. THANK YOU! Do more of these! Vintners pop up every where, not just in main stream wineries. I have many places in North Carolina that I can find good wines. off the grid for YOU. but good. and when I have visitors, I take them to the wineries, not the super market to buy a wine.

Learn globally, drink locally! YES! I am impressed you stepped outside the distributorship. Very good, Gary. Wine is more than just the label, it's the escape, the experience the adventure.
QOTD: shocked by Gary doing a non-distributor winery. loved it.

  • Well, who's to say, it definitely could've gone either way. I had also brought a Cabernet with me that day but KMurph made me choose between that and the Ameritage… I have a feeling the Cab might have shown better, but oh well. I will try and send Gary some of that, as well as our Sauvignon Blanc, and some of our 07 vintages coming out this Spring and we'll see what he thinks, WITHOUT me there!

    Whatever happend to Mr. Vay-Ner-Chuk??????
Is he hung-over from the last wine???????????

  • Hahaha, hey, if you could see the hustle that Gary puts in to bring episodes to you guys daily, you'll understand why he has to film several episodes a day. When I was there, he was a mad man, just getting back from Indianapolis, going on UStream, preparing for the Today show spot, tasting tons of wines, all so you all can see his smiling mug every day. Big props to GV.

It is interesting, isn't it? When I first moved to DC in 1998, and heard about Virginia wines, I laughed out loud! I will say that the DC locals laughed at the idea on NY State wines as well. But when we get used to an idea, it seems normal that good Cabernet Franc could come from Virginia, or good Riesling from NY State. So I was happy to see the Merlot come across well. Good for PA. I now actually look for VA Cab Francs, and am rarely disappointed. I also have a good sparkling wine from VA too, which is really nice stuff. Oregon seemed a stretch at one point to many people. Now, we pay $50 for a bottle! So, here's to PA!

QOTD: The last thing that shocked me…the price of leeks at whole foods. $4.99 per pound?! Jiminy Christmas, that's a lot.

  • Thanks for the props! Talking about Roger Daltrey, perhaps? Still think they rocked it out. I especially enjoyed watching Pete Townshend's belly pop through his shirt as he was wailing away

Nice show. Jason, my travel is taking me near Chadds Ford, Berwyn actually, near your home town. Going to be tight to get there but I'm going to try. Save save me a btl of the merlot?

  • Don Simpson

Jason – GREAT JOB!!! It definitely takes heart and courage to go out on a limb on the Thunder Show and represent the Penns Woods wines and your efforts paid off. You did a terrific job representing the wines, the winemaker, and came across very prepared. I think this put PA in a positive light (despite the lofty price tags) and I'm sure many wineries in PA are grateful for this. The Merlot Reserve made a STRONG showing too (I want to try). I live in Arlington, VA but my girlfriend is a grad student at Drexel so I'm up in Philly all the time. We've been meaning to do some trips out to the PA wineries so Penns Woods is on the list for this spring for sure! If you shoot me your contact info I'll hit you up before we visit.

Gary – thanks for having Jason on the show, this was fun. This episode gave Pennsylvania a platform and a spotlight and opened up many people's eyes to this area. Its time I give some of these wineries a shot.

QOTD: THESE BLIZZARDS!!!!! DC is projected another 10-20 inches tomorrow and the Fed Govt is closed for the 2nd consecutive day. Incredible…

Studying wine as a career!? Fun stuff.

  • Don Simpson

I think Daltrey forgot some of the lyrics in Pinball Wizard. The beginning was as disjointed as a 70 point wine 🙂 Picked it up a bit during Baba O'Riley.

  • Nate77

Sweet Episode as per I live in PA and about 20 seconds from MT.Hope winery but haven't checked out a lot of wines/wineries in the area yet as we only started drink wines around Xmas 09.

That song is da bomb…. “Teenage wasteland………

  • Well thanks for the reply. Very informative, keep up the good work.

Pretty sure I have never had a PA wine. QOTD – I was shocked like everyone else that a Republican won the Senate seat in MA. I was also shocked that the NFL would keep having such old guys as entertainment during the halftime show. The Who were good in their day, but can't the NFL find someone who is under 60?

  • corkscrew

Good show, Jason was interesting and a good advocate for his winery. I have tried wines from at least a half dozen Penn wineries, and have found just like Gary did some very good and some not so very good. Biggest issue with Penn wine outside of the stupid state laws and needing to buy at the winery is their price points…you can buy two great CDP's for the same price as the blend. Fun to visit in the spring since most have beautiful scenery where they are located. http://www.winelx.com QOTD-it will be shocking if we have another snow storm on Wednesday….hope they don't cancel the D.C. Wine Expo this weekend..

  • Altboy97

Gary, once again you are amazingly true to yourself. You say don't be afraid to ask, live your passion, and there he is finance wine-guy on the Thunder Show. Now time for some props for wines made right here in New Jersey. No I don't work there and have nothing to gain personaly. It just, in the six months since coming here from Calif, I see people doing what they love and making some great stuff (and I don't mean the fruit-flavored stuff). I'll spring for stuff right from my own basement and you will be pleasantly shocked. Also, thank goodness, New Jersey appears to be on the way to fixing our own backwards liquor laws.

  • SeanieBoy

QOTD: Oklahoma's big win over the Longhorns in NCAA hoops. Boomer!

  • Hey Gary great show! Awesome that you did this show with the LiveStream on. That was a pumped chat room that day! I love to hear that Jason came in with some serious hustle.

QOTD: The last thing that shocked me was my horrible attempt to fix my dryer outlet… my arm was numb for like an hour.

  • Beeper

Great show, thanks for keeping it real…

QOTD: 2nd of half Superbowl XLIV

  • CharlieTN

Hmm, was that a reference to something?

    Peyton gettin' picked…

  • castello

I thought he might have screwed up on Pinball Wizard but that proves(I think) that they weren't lip syncing. Perdy good for some ol farts.

  • amgryger

Cool episode. I grew up in the Downingtown area. Maybe one of these days when I am visiting my parents I'll head down to Chaddsford and check out your tasting room.

QOTD: I watched “Food Inc” on Saturday. I was shocked and appalled.

  • Michael C in MKE

Yes I believe that to be true. I appreciate the show very much and I'm really just trying to rib a little. Also, I miss the flavor of the football season.

Props again to you JasonM I think you were a classy guest. I've got high hopes for the future of cold weather grape growing. I'd love to hear more about cold hardy hybrid grapes being developed at Cornell. University of Minnesota has been a big player in these parts to bring the innovation. Next time your on WLTV bring the Traminette to the show.

  • Duncan9idaho

Living in a “The Other 46” area for wine (Colorado) I think it is great we see Pa. get some love. How about some Colorado wines to take a look at? We do make more then just beer here, you know. Thanks again Gary for another great show.

QOTD- I am shocked it has been over a year since I last posted and not shocked that I am happy to be back watching the Thunder Show!

  • QOTD: I was shocked at how bad the Super Bowl commercials were and how unmemorable they were!

  • WineWoman

QOTD: A little shocked at the price of those wines, but I'm still very interested in visiting the winery and that area. Impressive guest and impresive Merlot, or is that Melot.

  • Gabe4455

Wonderful episode, I was definitely shocked to sign on and see a show dedicated to PA wines. Being a native of the Pennsylvania and growing up north of this location, I feel the state does in fact have a lot to offer, but is still lacking the experience and maturity. I think in a few years we're going to see a lot of decent production coming out of of there. Jason was a great guest too, a young, informed, and energetic fan of wine. It is always positive to see individuals like that.
I was also shocked Peyton Manning threw that crucial interception, very uncharacteristic of him.

  • Anonymous

Parker scores what he believes the wine will be at maturity – how young/old was the bottle? And was it Parker or one of the over-excited (Miller) minions? ;-]

  • Great! That merlot sounds interesting, like I need to get two bottles two days ago. Good show.

QOTD: the last thing that shocked me, that I remember, is reading that apple demanded an ebook publisher to remove the ability to transfer files to and from the iphone via USB.

  • corkscrew

Gary, was reading some old emails and came across this on Robert Parker's December e-letter..so just in case somehow you have not read what he said (quite impressive)…QUOTE-“I also met the new video guru and You-Tube star, Gary Vaynerchuck who gave a dynamic speech about the place of the internet and wine, and who may have a greater future as a motivational speaker than as a wine retailer. He's the real deal and we should all be happy there is some young talent coming up as there has been a dirth of that for sure.” http://www.winelx.com
