line of the day – ‘The Vanilla Villain might have to make an appearance’

Didn’t think I was going to like this guest but he turned out knowledgeable and passionate…and did a good job trying to market obviously overpriced wines

QOTD: The overwhelming disappointment I felt when the Colts lost the Superbowl. It just becomes such a big part of your life from August to February.

Good job Gary on your candor with the wines. Loved the show.

  • Will do!

  • Greg

Nice flow to the show Gary, it's cool to see some decent wine coming from the east coast!!

QOTD: That the SuperBowl didn't go OVER 56.5!!

  • Screw these blizzards! I'm supposed to go work an event for Penns Woods tomorrow at Capital Grille in Center City Philly, hoping it won't be cancelled.

Shoot me an email at jason [at] pennswoodswinery [dot] com when you're back up here, and I'll take care of you guys!

  • HOT mess on the nose gesticulation was awesome.

  • Hahaha, you don't even want to know… We just sent him some more Zaccagnini wine (featured in Episode V, Italia, which is wine Gino imports) because he is shooting his first music video off of his new album and wanted to have ours wines in the bacground. Sadat X and Will Tell are awesome.

  • Hahaha, nice catch on the Melot, didn't even notice. Shoot me an email and I'll see what I can do about getting you a discount if you want to try the wine.

I am from CO as well. Gary, if you are interested in this, call a shop called Mondo Vino. They have had a number of Colorado wineries come in and would have all the contact info.

  • carlo10

good work jason on getting into the forum here. i dont know why more guests dont do that. i know everyone in here appreciates you even more now that you are actually interacting with us.

  • Very ejoyable show…kudos for you Jason for following your instinct…I wish I had been sharp enough to start walking up on wineries when I was your age.
Gino, you got a good kid working for you.
I'll definitely plan to visit the next time I am in the neighborhood,…hopefully in the spring.

    QOTD: the electric fence.

qotd: that anyone would think Lady Gaga deserves a Grammy.

    anyone > Lady Gaga

  • Thanks a lot! Now I can see why Gary is so obsessed with commenters and with bringing out the lurkers! Been a real fun night getting to talk with everyone! And as always, if anyone wants any more info about any of the wines or the winery, shoot me an email at jason [at] pennswoodswinery [dot] com, find me on twitter @pennswoodswine or friend me up on FB at facebook [dot] com/Pennswoodswinery

  • Beyonce < Lady Gaga

  • SourGrapesFC

More Colorado, more Texas, more New Mexico. Do a Southwest show, Gary!

  • Waits

    Lol ; )

Hey Jason did a great job. Very good character. It is hard for a young man to turn away from the status quo and really follow his/her passion. I hope things work out well for you Jason. I am a little younger than you and am going to gamble on the American Dream as well. That is what it is all about. Good honesty Gary. Maybe we can keep an eye on PA in the years to come.

    QOTD:

Receiving my TIN number, llc papers, and company seal for my first business. How dreams become realities.

  • SourGrapesFC

Beyonce is a total rock star. There's essentially nothing she can't do and look good doing it. Lady Gaga is a circus act without the circus, and at least you can get some peanuts at the circus.

  • Waits

Agreed. Almost all music nowadays is all lip syncing, and that’s takin’ the soul out of music. The slipups & the fact that they may not hit all notes perfect all the time, gives the music soul… i’m a strong believer of that.
The Who have always been a good band, not sure about all those reunion tours though.
Seems like all bands go on reunion tours these days…. and half of it is not bringing anything new/exciting to the table.

  • That's awesome! I wish you all the best.

  • divyamistry

May be when I visit PA, I'll try to make a round through the wine trail.
QOTD: My latest shock has been my own cooking. I finally made something I won't mind eating and/or serving others. I am *that* awesome!

  • Pat__B

Love the fact this guy is 23, following his own path and making it happen. Best of luck to Penns Woods.

    QOTD: Who dat? SAINTS! WoW….

  • QOTD: Shocked at how Connecticut wines suck!

  • Mike_Nelson

Shocked by the complexity and balance of the 2007 Zaca Mesa Chardonnay Santa Ynez. But the last true shocker, as in “What the f***?”, was when I found out my younger brother dropped his job in Japan (that I helped land for him) like a bad habit then flew home. That was not a call I wanted to receive 6 am Saturday morning from my mother-in-law.

  • Nice blog with a nice video of PA Wine Tasting with Penns Woods Winery ? Episode #813. It was nice watching it. Keep on sharing.

  • Thanks for yet another great show guys. Looking forward to the Mott … medal … school … award … student … shirt

QOTD: Shocked to find a twinge of jealousy in myself in the midst of a giant love polygon which I'll perhaps write about one day.

  • briankaldenberg

QOTD: The last thing that really shocked me was how snow skiing in Utah is actually better and warmer than Colorado.

  • TropicalMBA

One of my favorite episodes of all time, in part because I grew up in PA and drinking local wine, but also because Jason is a big star! Good to see him on the program, you should have him back.

  • Michael D

    Gary & Jason,

Good show. I would like to try some PA wine, because I am convinced that the “other 46” states can and do produce some high-quality vino.

QOTD: The last thing that shocked me, in the wine world, was a bottle of 2008 Page Springs Cellars Vino del Barrio Arizona Red Wine [36% Syrah, 22% Mourvedre, 21% Grenache, 9% Zinfandel, 8% Petite Sirah, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Counoise]. I have no idea what counoise is, but the wine is “old world” good! The 2008 vintage is made from 100% AZ grapes! I know, it's shocking. The winemaker is Eric Glomski, who was a guest on WLTV a while back. If you search the WLTV archives for Arizona wine, you will find the episode. The guy seems pretty cool, but the wine he makes is way beyond cool. This is the second wine form AZ that I have mentioned. I want everyone to know that this state is producing some quality juice.

  • Yep, we are on the list there. Gonna be pouring the Merlot Reserve, Ameritage Reserve, and Cabernet Reserve (all ’05s) tonight. That is, if the snow doesn’t ruin everything haha

  • castello

    Ouch

  • QOTD: The onside kick

  • brianaf

    Hey Gary,
Nice episode nice to see some of the wineries from other states! And just a heads up Meritage rhymes with heritage.

  • jcrazy

Good show, too bad for the wines.

    QOTD: My electric toaster oven.

  • b777capt

    Jason
You are brave coming on WL. It takes guts to sit there while GV rips one of the key products your company produces but you took it well. I assume that PA wine laws make shipping wine difficult. Just what an entrepreneur does not need is bad regulations on top of the normal problems starting a business. I hope you and the winery you work for have many years together building a successful business.

QOTD: I can't remember the last time I was really shocked by something….maybe when Sara Palin was picked to be a VP candidate.

  • b777capt

Lady G is a total visual circus but if you close your eyes and listen to the music she has a great voice and definite songwriting/arranging chops.

  • audiofan

“Beyonce is a total rock star.” Really? REALLY??? Looks have nothing to do with talent but she CAN sing (with the help of pitch-correction).

  • audiofan

Dude, you need to get laid…

  • audiofan

I'm shocked that people still think the “Sideways/Merlot” connection is valid (or ever was). Ever tasted a mature Petrus? And wasn't the “star” wine of that movie (that the main character was “saving”) a '61 Cheval Blanc? A wine that's typically about 50% Merlot???

1st off – GO PA! I am from PA and very happy to see that there is some serious wine out there. I am used to seeing just plain old jug wine coming from PA, at least NEPA.

In terms of PA alc. laws….. pfff. the state stores blow. I think one thing is that maybe there needs to be a Pa section at the stores. a friend in NY told me that the guy at Sherry Lehmann told him that they are able to send btls to PA? is this true? anyone?

as someone who is not afraid to spend some $$$ on wine, I would consider $35 or so on the merlot. 55 on the big boy…. mmmmmmm no. at that price, I can get some really nice Bordeaux and Burgundy.

The nose on the Armeritage sounds like the woods in PA in the fall : )

QOTD – my 4 yr old shocks me everyday with his ideas, jokes abilities, learning.

  • gubbiotti

the whole irony is that the cheval blanc is mostly cab franc and merlot and that is what miles hates the most. another fun fact is that they wanted it to be a petrus but petrus would not let them use their name and bottle.

  • Kmurph

my bad Jason…spelling is not my strong suit. It’s fixed now! 🙂

  • SourGrapesFC

She CAN sing WITHOUT pitch-correction. In fact, you have to use auto-tune to make her sound off key: http://www.blender.com/blender-blog/79012/beyonce-warble-is-hoax.html

I’m not the world’s biggest Beyonce fan (not exactly my type of music) but you’ve got to give credit where credit is due.

  • Thanks so much! Let me know if you're ever back in your home state and want to make a trip to the winery.

  • Hey, like Gary always says, it's just one guys palette. I wouldn't have come on to the show if I wasn't prepared for the wines to get ripped! Should be interesting going to the office today, I hope Gino doesn't kill me when he watches the review haha!

  • Love to tell this story to the Merlot haters that come through the tasting room

  • Yea, definitely not too sure what we can and cannot do, but I am definitely going to see what I can do to ship the wines to you all and not break too many laws… If you are interested in trying the ameritage, shoot me an email at jason [at] pennswoodswinery [dot] com and I'll ask Gino when I get to the office today about a special Vayniac discount. I'll keep you guys posted on our Twitter page (@pennswoods), which also links to our FB (/Pennwoodswinery), so follw/friend us up if you want some more info about how to get the wines.

  • Not really sure what varieities they are pulling off up there….maybe they are making a Sarah Palin Rogue Rose?

  • Alvaro

For some reason the last 2 episodes of wine library tv are not available for download in Itunes. could you please fix it?

  • Anonymous

A place in the NY Hudson Valley is going Traminette, picked up a bottle or two last time I was up there (2008?)
