line of the day – ‘The Vanilla Villain might have to make an appearance’

Didn’t think I was going to like this guest but he turned out knowledgeable and passionate…and did a good job trying to market obviously overpriced wines

Jason, Great job, I work on the tasting room staff down the street at another winery. Good shout out for the BV wine trail. I’ll be over one of these days and introduce myself. Sounds like you’d like to keep on learning, Check out http://www.phillywine.com I’ve been listenting to your tweets as well.

  • Gabe4455

What part of NEPA are you from?

  • winecrazy

Yeah, and could you please try fixing my NO EMAIL problem…….that I have had ever since this new DISQUS forum type started. It's starting to disqust me….lol

  • poconnor

Gary, you got it right! I checked my climatological correlation tables for the Chadds Ford area (Marcus Hook, PA), which compares its climate data with other important areas, and found out it has a huge positive correlation with the following viticultural areas:
    Dijon ? Bourgogne (Chardonnay) ? 95,50%
    Bourges ? Loire (Sauvignon Blanc) ? 95,40%
    Sablons ? St. Emilion/Pomerol (Merlot) ? 94,60%
    Gourdon ? Cahors (Malbec) ? 95,70%
And a not so high positive correlation with:
    Bordeaux (Cabernet Sauvignon) ? 89,30%
    Siena ? Tuscany (Sangiovese) ? 78,30%

  • hollisdevillo

its a character arc thing. the hatred of merlot shows his inability to change his life and what not, when he finally drinks his 61 cheval, he breaks through, blah blah blah, gets the girl, becomes happy and what not. it sucks everyone actually thought he thought merlot was bad. it was just a stupid metaphor. do some people not eat oranges either because everytime don corleone got near one something bad happened?

  • WOW, very interesting stuff! Where did you find this? I would love to show this to Gino. Who know, maybe we can start growing some Malbec!

  • Gary,
Great show today & I had a few comments:
I completely agree Lady Gaga was ROBBED at the Grammys! She is fabulous & you need to have her on your show. Also, I thought “Meritage” rhymed with “heritage”? What up with that? Along the same lines, what shocked me was how you dissed the guy's Meritage – but hey, it was only one guy's palate (um, YOURS). That Merlot did sound delicious though – so did the Vanilla Villain Chardonnay. I look forward to seeing you at the SoBe Food & Wine Festival at the end of the month! Fun, fun:)

    ;P !

I have not tried anything from PA. The last local winery I tried outside of the Big 3 in the states were from Florida, which were horrible. Though to learn about the wine process was very interesting. walking the vineyards and seeing the process was the best part.

QOTD: The thing that has shocked me the most was the SAINTS wining the Superbowl!!

  • Phredd3

Nice episode. Jason is a natural.

QOTD: I know we're not supposed to get political, here, but my answer is Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. I won't comment beyond that.

  • Swan Reach

@kungfu_sage, Gary uses Viddler.com for video hosting. Check it out.

  • missatiejacket

great episode. It's good to see that there is some potential in PA. I would expect as much based on what I've tasted so far from the Finger Lakes in NY. I love that Sadat X got mentioned here! If anyone hasn't checked out his show, search for it on youtube. It's hilarious.

qotd: I was shocked that I couldn't convince someone at a tasting room in southern CA to let me spit.

Gary, speaking of other wine personalities (Sadat X), it would be great to see Sir Gary come back. Madeira would be a fitting category for him to cover.

  • Rich

Great show regarding Pennsylvania wines! Nice job Jason, and thank you Gary for bringin' the thunder on the Merlot! I have some friends who live in Philly, and the next time we visit them, we're definitely going to have to make the 30 minute trip to Penn Woods Winery. I just checked out your home page, as well as your facebook pictures, and Penn Woods, reminds me of Doffo, which is in Temecula, and it happens to be one of my favorite local CA wineries, but as Gary said, Temecula is another 2nd or 3rd tier winery area in California. We'd love to come up and visit you and Gino Razzi. I can see how the prices run between 30-55, just because you don't produce that many cases. But, how many total cases do you produce?

  • Yes, bring back Sir Gary! Madeira or Sherry even, especially considering theres the Secret Sherry Society… www [dot] secretsherrysociety [dot] com

  • I believe our production is just aroud 2000 cases right now total. We're doing some new plantings right now (we have a 30 acre vineyard, only 8 under vine, so plenty of room to expand) so I think his goal is around 3000. We are actually producing a Viognier this year of all things! I'm gonna be psyched to try it. Definitely check our facebook (/pennswoodswinery) or our twitter (@pennswoodswine) if you guys want any more details about stuff!

yeah, it really is pretty incredible just how big of an impact sideways has had on the wine industry. people watched the movie and picked up two pieces of wine knowledge–pinot noir=good, merlot=bad. in the process, people ignored the fact that this was a hollywood film, not a wine seminar. pinot noir simply just fit with paul giamatti’s personality in the film (sensitive, finicky). and the ’61 cheval blanc part is really ironic and hilarious–only trouble is most of the moviegoing public didn’t pick up on it.

  • A pleasure to see PA wine make an appearance (As I am a PA resident). You guys could have done a whole episode just on the issues plaguing PA from a laws and regulations standpoint.

Great to see a show on PA wines even though I am from NY. PA represent!

QOTD: My 8 year old niece did the “10th Long Beach Polar Bear Club Swim” this super bowl Sunday for charity! And this is her SECOND year!

    GO MOLLIE! 😀

  • winemonologues

Nice job Jason. Tough spot to be in and you pulled it off admirably. As a resident of Michigan, I thank you both for the reviews of “the other 46” wines.

QOTD: Manning throwing the “pick-6” with the game on the line!

  • XpensiveWino

I’ve been to some of the wineries, but haven’t biked the trail. It’s not my bag. I’d rather play 36 then go tasting, if you know what I mean.

  • Richie

QOTD: My alarm clock this morning.

  • Yea that's a great site Jason – and their logo grape is killer. Also I may be seeing you guys this weekend for your valentine's day event, so keep an eye out!

  • mikebest

Gary just a quick one, guests rule!!! (just not all the time, but one a week is cool)

  • Phil G

Jason – glad to see a Cornell grad doing some wine-related hustle!

QOTD – I was shocked by Manning's 4th quarter interception, wasn't expecting that!

  • Scotty b.

Nice job Jason. Impressive showing for Cornell. Nice to see that you did your homework before coming on the show. Gino should be proud.

QOTD: Just got a HUGE promotion at work! Totally shocking…ok not really.

  • I'll be there all day Saturday! Let me know who you are if you stop in and I'll give you guys the hook up!

  • Thanks a lot! Gotta give big props to Profs. Mutkoski and Arnink back at Cornell, without their courses, I would definitely not be where I am today!

  • Vineares

Heh he pulled it off even after that last wine. I remember catching a bit of this on uStream and I felt so bad for him!

QOTD : my girlfriend said she wanted to move in with me 😮

  • mikebest

QOTD I just starting work for a massive company and we can only sell one case at a time…

  • teckdeck2008

Hey dude great guest. I will try and save up the money to try the wines lol.
Qotd: The a**kicking the saints gave the colts…i thought it would be a closer game.

  • Sounds good Jason, I hope the snow behaves.

    Best,
    Matt Apsokardu

  • kungfu_sage

    1. hey gary aren't you ever gonna do that sparkling week you were talking about a while ago?

    2. does anyone know what program gary uses to post his videos? I'm looking for something where I can post videos online that are longer than the average youtube video.

QOTD: My blazers lost to the Lakers on their home court for the first time in 5 years 🙁

  • GLrocks

Gary great work and I hope they can keep on making nice wines from PA …what is Melot and what is Chadonnay? New grapes from ???? Hah

  • Cool_Dave

    Awesome show! Great guest!!
QOTD — I was shocked once at work. It was only 120 volts. Oops!! Have been much more careful since.

  • abrams7

As a merlot lover I will have to say if I see it in stores I probably buy it.
Just to give it a try.

  • AnthonyManzalji

Gary&Mott, Thanks again for being so dedicated. When the video plays the intro is extremely louder than the actual video. I usually mute it until it starts but I wish your mic was louder like it is on UStream. Also, how to I get updates for when you are going on live with your show on Ustream?

Qotd: I'm shocked that more wineries don't include some sort of dining option to accompany their tasting room. Wine bars do it all the time. Ultimately people will be sitting down with friends, eating and opening your wine. Why not give them the space to do it? Give the consumers a chance to purchase another bottle and possibly join your wine club.

  • allanj

Yep! Great to see the guest being very involved in the conversation after the show.

Top marks from me Jason, and something for other guests to think about….

  • dream_team_sf

been a lurker for a while now. finally out. i just have to say that this show was great, but frustrating. too many american winemakers are just charging way too much for their wines–this being a classic case in point. if you are making wines in pennsylvania–a place that not many people associate with wine–don't charge $40-$50 for your wine! this is a simple rule. price your wine appropriately and allow adventurous people to just try your wine. that's the most important thing if you are making wine in an up and coming wine region. if your wine is priced at a point where people can just try it without even thinking about the price (because it's fair) then you can build up your reputation and brand, and then slowly raise prices. don't try to pay off your state-of-the-art winemaking facility in one year–it's a short-sighted business plan. if i'm paying $40-$50 for a wine, which i rarely do anyways, i expect to get a whole hell of a lot of wine. and at this point in time, it certainly wouldn't be a PA wine.

  • allanj

    I'm with you on this…
They are a bit pricey to say the least. It's also a hard time to sell those higher price-point wines, the way the world economy is lurking along ; )

    Welcome on board.

QOTD: HOW MUCH I LOVE FOOTBALL!
The Super Bowl 2010 was the first time I've ever watch an entire game of football.
(I live in Norway and over here it's all soccer, soccer, soccer…)
OMG!, that's what I call an entertaining sport!
An the fact that it was such an exiting game made me love it ever more!

  • richw1

It's nice to see PA get some love. Even people in PA think that PA wine sucks. I don't know enough about wine to know if that's true. But, it's one of the reasons why I never bought any wine from PA.

QOTD: Coming back to work from lunch and seeing 5 people watch as an older lady tried to get up after falling on the sidewalk into the snow. I ran over and helped her immediately. It shocks me that people don't give a damn anymore.
