line of the day – ‘The Vanilla Villain might have to make an appearance’

Didn’t think I was going to like this guest but he turned out knowledgeable and passionate…and did a good job trying to market obviously overpriced wines

I think we may be out of luck today.

I think you might be right again Castello…. If only he would do some Rioja this time…. Some value Rioja please…. Gary V

I live in Philly, I'm definitely going to go down and check the wines out.

All the snow we are getting here is shocking the hell out of me!

  • davidfrommichigan

I enjoyed the show. I'd like to see Left Foot vineyards in Michigan.

  • Mott

    I don't do Facebook, I don't do Twitter.

  • Great show. Glad to see some East Coast wines on the program. Maybe you can do some wines from Bedell Cellars in Long Island? I'm getting married there this spring and I'd love some insight from you and the vayniacs. Thanks GV.

QOTD – The last thing that shocked and pleased me was the Colts choking on the big stage. Jets in 2010!!!

  • carlo10

    haha, fair enough.

  • DFbwp

Great show! Love it when you do the other 46, break down the knowledge and tell the truth.

QOTD: What shocked me: Manning getting rung up with a pick six.

  • DFbwp

I will buy that t-shirt if you make it.

  • DFbwp

    Welcome to our world, A_S.

  • DFbwp

I agree about the homework. If you're going to come on the show, know what it's about!

  • DFbwp

Have been scrolling through to see who also was shocked by that p-6. Shocking!

  • Coleman

Good show but at those prices I won't be seeking out PA wines. I was last shocked when I heard they were planning on closing the Cactus Cafe in Austin. It is the best spot in town to hear acoustic singer/songwriter kind of music.

QOTD: All of this snow. I have to dig myself out tomorrow morning in order to sell wine and spirits 10-6.

QOTD: lack of good wine shops in boston – gary, interested in a satellite store? please.

    I WANT MY (NEW) WLTV!

  • zrm

What a great guy to have around. He knows his stuff pretty well. Gotta love any bottle that brings the east coast thunder. That Merlot sounds very exciting. As a VA guy i can certainly see the hit and miss as well as the to be frank crappy price points that the other 47 states bring.

QOD: All this damn snow in VA!

  • Hahaha, thanks a lot! Always fun to try an swing a positive light on a <80 pt score. I feel like a politician!

  • IndyWineGuy

Have you been to Round Bard on the MI wine trail? Was up there last summer and enjoyed what I saw there and at a few others.

  • I know, definitely agree with you both. Would love to see the prices come down a bit myself, as I think we would ultimately move more product, but it is what it is. I gotta do what the boss tells me. Hahaha as Gary mentioned in the video, very “old world”, when he wants something done his way, that's the way it must be done. Fortunately, the same holds true for his winemaking policy, so we end up with a pretty darn good end product

  • Love these kind of reactions!! Saw tons of them tonight when I was pouring our wines for an event at Capital Grille in Philly. Best part of my job!

  • Nice, Bedell is great! Trent Preszler from Bedell was the TA for one of my viticulture and enology classes, great guy! Congrats!

  • davidfrommichigan

No, I haven't, but I live up here and I like to keep my eyes open for good everyday vinos. Whites are pretty good, and some of the cabernet francs seem promising, but expensive.

I think I saw Mott twittering just a little bit on episode 620, or was it 420?

  • Grill Factor

    Try:
Blanchards Wine & Spirits (W Roxbury, Jam Plain, Revere)
Ralph's Derby St. Wine & Spirits (Hingham)
    Salem Wine Imports (Salem)
Spirit Shoppe (online, store in western MA)

So you have a rv resort or what? I need a good road trip.

  • Thanks, it's good to know that they have good people there. We have been very happy with our experience so far.

  • Grill Factor

Forgot to mention Dave's Fresh Pasta in Somerville

  • Don Simpson

Jason – glad to hear you were able to have your event in Philly tonight because you guys are about to get DUMPED on with about 16-24 inches of snow! Sounds like they're projecting about 8-10 inches in DC area now. This is out of control.

  • Damn groundhog

  • Don Simpson

    Amen brother…

  • cpal

Of course I have to watch Winelibrary TV to find out about a winery less than two miles from my home….I'll be there to pick up some of the Merlot as soon as the snow gets plowed!

Great episode and glad to see the local Chadds Ford wineries getting some attention and quality continuing to improve.

  • hypersomnia

That's the difference between someone who likes doing something and someone who knows how to run a business doing what they like. Sounds to me like he is trying to experiment with wine making but doesn't have the money to back his experimentation so he is trying to get some people to support him (by paying for overpriced wine) until he can work out the kinks. I can understand his motivation but there are better charities out there.

  • Like learning about the second, third, fourth, etc tier locations that produce wine. However, the price-point for that merlot is a bit much even though it may be good. It's like Wolfer Estates on Long Island trying to charge $100.00 for a bottle '05 Merlot. It didn't work well for them.

  • hypersomnia

As a side note, Gary great show, it's got to be hard to be brutally honest with people when they are sitting right next to you. I think we all respect you for being honest though.

They should also heed your advice on maybe focusing on the Merlot. And maybe they should stop playing with all the other grape varietals or at least use the Merlot as the foundation of a blend.

Make something good that you can sell first to build a base/foundation then you can go play around with other grapes and see if you can come up with something new. But you need to pay the bills in order to pay for your play time.

  • johnboston

    Good guest.
qotd: How sore a friendly game of tackle football before the Superbowl can make a guy.

  • Awesome! Love to see local Vayniacs. Let me know when you're coming and I'll make sure I'm there to say hi

  • I was shocked that a cornell grad brought up basketball with no mention of his very own Big Red. They have been doing great the last couple seasons and are continuing to do well this year…

I am also a cornell alum and grew up in PA…crazy stuff. I was glad to see the Merlot do well, but I can't afford to buy wines at these prices.

  • zrm

Question to you Vaniacks. The show title mentions the other 46. So i know Washington Oregon and California. What is the other state thats not part of that 46?

  • terranceshtev

My girlfriends finger. East Coast wines are getting better and better!

  • Greg B.

Big G, I like it. It just opens up ideas for travel. When you go to other states that are not known for Wine, you might just say “Honey let's do a little Wine tasting here. We might just find something we love”. Very cool.

    QOTD: Da Saints!

  • adrums

New York. Finger Lakes and such, primarily for Riesling…

So much potential for wines in the US. When we talk in their limestone hills and gorges hectares of this varietal or appelation in France what is the poetential here in the great wide open spaces of the midwest. For example look at the terroire of Misouri and ketucky with their limestone hills and gorges. Already many wineries opening up some already establisowledgehed. With the 'crush it!” passion and knowledga, as exemplefied by your guest today, the sky's the limit. Shocked.. Wisconsin Prarie fumee try it with some walleye!

  • mattgmann

being an ohioan (sp), I'm quite familiar with bad/overpriced regional wine. I've had some drinkable juice from the buckeye state, but everything decent is priced through the roof. Most of the wines from ohio come from the poorest parts of the state (northeast and south), so I don't understand the insane markups. The wineries here also suffer from the white zin/wine fruit punch theme aimed at tourists who don't know wine. Finding a serious regional wine is hard, and when you do it's not worth the price.

  • castello

    TMI!

  • castello

I like it. I may have to pull this off for Vday while setting up camp at the beach. Maybe some special evoo!? Extra capers and some sour dough to dip in the sauce.

  • castello

Yes the man gets busy. I just had what I think is a suedo Rioja but I liked it. Biga Tempranillo from Luberri. I've had the very old school Lopez de Heredia which came very highly reccomended but it was way old school for me, I think.

  • I know cash is king and speed queen in the US, but sometimes it pays in the long run to turn a blind eye to price. Italian wine would never become as good as they are today if the italians had turned away from high prices, it would still be cheap chianti sour cherry yuk. so sponosr your local manufacterer now and then, that will be good for development, quality and price in the long run. Good things comes to those who wait 🙂

last thing that shocked me: GV not asking the QOTD in the last ep!!
