line of the day – ‘The Vanilla Villain might have to make an appearance’

Didn’t think I was going to like this guest but he turned out knowledgeable and passionate…and did a good job trying to market obviously overpriced wines

  • Gary,

I am glad that you brought up the Liquor Control Board of PA. I think it is time to put their feet to the fire. they just changed their new item listing policy; which on the surface seemed to me as a good thing. I was sorely mistaken. I posted a long rebuking of them on one of my websites. If you want to read about why your choices in Pennsylvania will likely decrease; read my rant at http://www.teacherspetwine.com

They are a disgrace to Democracy.

  • I know! I felt bad! Right after I left WL was the day I found out Cornell was a nationally ranked team for the first time, ever!

  • Love it! This is exactly the type of idea I want people to start getting in their heads!

  • jmacc

It is good to know that there is good wine produced 1/2 hour from my house. Those prices seemed a little steep, but I think this will lead me to check out these wines, so thanks. Yes Gary, the PA wine rules are pretty rough. WL is a long drive from here – although I have been there once

Ha! Nice Mott, way to rage against the 2.0 machine!

  • ewb

Great episode Gary. Not only expanding palates but also expanding my mind.

  • Biff

how many times does this guy drop “cornell” during the segment?

  • Hahah sorry. Hey, Gary asks for my story, so I gotta give it to him, and a big part of that obviously involves the school I went to that shall reamin nameless…

  • Great show Gary. I like to see some of the other 46 make some good wines. We have a local place here, that blows away all the other wineries in TN, and there prices are higher then you would expect. They have one or two that are definintly worth there price point though. Chateau Ross winery. And they are only 30 mins from where I live.

QOTD: The last thing that shocked me was the heat lamp I have outside for my outdoor cats. Did you know that within an hour of it falling face down on the deck it can burn a HOLE IN IT!!!!! Yikes. glad it was wet outside as I think it may have done more then burn a hole in it. BTW I have fixed the problem of it falling now. Nails, and a cage.

Has NY fallen off the map? 46/3?

    HELP!
I WANT TO GO TO A CHAMPAGNE BAR IN NYC FOR VALENTINES DAY– WHERE SHOULD I GO???

  • Anonymous

You really nailed it then Jason.

  • cellarrat5

they also make a killer gerwerts from time to time. Cool long island climate, growing season is short, but for early ripeners it works out perfectly. They also make decent ice wine as well.

  • cellarrat5

these recipies your posting sound fantastic. Keep it up. As soon as I can taste food again I am trying this one, easy and would go well with a few choice whites.

  • Nice show. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am not too far from Penns Woods living in South Jersey. May take a ride up one weekend to check things out.

I agree with most that the merlot sounds good. I appreciate Jason's willingness to sit down for the review, but even ore so for making himself available to respond to the commenters. That will go a long way for your business.

    Good to know about Pennsylvania.
QOTD: My last shock was when my friend and I were walking her dog, Oscar, and we passed a yard with a new pit bull mix who barked at us quite a bit. When we rounded the corner he appeared before us, had apparently jumped the fence, and jumped on Oscar (96 pound German Shepherd) knocking him down. Oscar was shocked, we were shocked, much tussling and barking and screaming. It seems that the pit bull was just playing, and we were able to get him back in his yard. We hadn't been this shocked since Oscar captured a goat in the ditch and we had to slide into the water to pull him off of the goat who was absolutely in shock.

  • Thanks for the compliments! Shoot me an email at jason [at] pennswoodswinery [dot] com and let me know if/when you're coming and I'll make sure I'm there to say hi.

  • cellarrat5

Has Gary fallen off the map? He must be road hustling.

  • Cool_Dave

Ok. I have a problem. I just did an experiment with an 05 chateau Poujeaux red Bordeau. I drank it fresh after poping and it was good. I decanted some and tried it after 30 min. Lost half it's nose but still had some fruit flavor. After two hours it lost all it's nose and had no flavor except stems and tannin. Every type of wine I have done this experiment with has proven that decanting does nothing but HURT THE WINE.
I don't want to be controversial or insinuate anything but I just do not see ANY benefit from decanting. It does not make a tannic wine smoother. It just makes it tannic with no other flavors.
GARY please help. Realy be unbiased and open minded and help me and others who have noticed this. Prove if you can that decanting does anything to help wine because I just do not see it.
I have tried five different varietals from different regeons and tasted at several points in time. All got worse. It is not my decanter.
I hate to say it but from where I am sitting decanting looks like a bad thing. What are you all tasting??!!!
    Very frustrated and confused.
    Cool Dave. : (

  • richritterinny

Let's just say NY. Lots of wine country, lots of varietals.

Thanks for having another PA wine on your show!
Why didn't the owner of the vineyard come on your show himself? I think that would have better served to promote Penns Woods Winery than your guest did. I live relatively close to Chaddsford Winery and have visited it, but never heard of Penns Woods, not that that necessarily means anything.
I am a Pennsylvania resident and cannot see myself spending that much on a bottle of PA wine.
You are totally correct about the draconian wine/liquor laws in PA. Fortunately, I live close enough to Delaware and a Total Wine so my wine choices are not limited to what Pennsylvania thinks I should drink.

  • joelmchenry

GV, love that you continue to present unknown places and wines. Nice job.

  • cellarrat5

Well Dave, I personally do not know what to tell you. What were the vintage of all these varietals that you tried? Have you had this problem in the past? Often times specific wine with a specific structure and flavor profile stand up to decanting differently. Allow me to nerd it up a little bit. Often times when tannic structures, alcohol, phenol compounds and other components of wine interact with oxygen they change dramatically. It is possible that the vintages/styles of wine you had did not warrant decanting. But this is far fetched based on the info you gave. I have always found decanting to be good for most older reds, particularly the more tannic varietals. But who knows, like Gary always preaches if you don?t like it, don?t do it/drink it.

  • allanj

I don't think i can help.. but, right now i'm enjoying a 2004 Paulliac, which has sat in the decanter for 7 hours. Had a the exact same wine a few days back, and it's a completely different wine. Much smoother/open than the first experience, which was a bit more “rough” (well tannic). It has to be said that, the decanter is narrow at the top, just like the bottle. I don't know about your decanter, if it's has a bit more air coming through, but if it's only been decanting 30 min. i don't think that that would make much of a difference to the wine.

My best to you and your wines/loved ones

    Hey Gary

I am a long time viewer, I ve been through all of your shows by now. Great stuff, really enjoy watching; it s a great way to spend my lunchbreak. Thanks for the efforts gary! First time that i write a comment though. Gary, just want to ask you something: could you please give the organic / and or fairetrade wines some more press? I truly believe there are great wines to be found in that area; and so little has been said about these wines in and throughout the wineworld. Go gary, do something about it in WL-tv!

    David – Brussels / Belgium

  • allanj

    Welcome out lurker….

Yessss! orgainc wine should definitely get more press….

Gonna taste some this weekend: Spanish wine called: Bodegas Habla no. 5. Looking forward to that ; )

    We're all mad here….

  • CharlieTN

Snowstorm… doubt there will be an episode today.

  • carlo10

agreed…fair trade and organic is important to me, and a bunch of others out there. i know one of your past guests from spain (dont remember his name) said he didnt put organic on his label because he thought that was the way it was supposed to be (which i agree). but on the same hand you might as well help out the fair trade community as well

  • allanj

    Too bad then

  • carlo10

Gary, if you are at home from the snow storm you should do a short show on ustream or viddler from your home with wine you have laying around (i am sure you do have wine at your house…right?)

I went to a “green” winery up here in Oregon a while ago. got a bottle pinot noir and held it for 5 years. When I drank it I found it was the worst tasting thing I'd ever drunk. Now I suspect it might have been corked, I don't have enough experience with that to know what corked wine tastes like, but does anyone know if there is a higher rate of corked wines in organic, or no sulfides wines?

  • allanj

    Lol

  • allanj

Don't think so….. you were just unlucky man, that's all

  • drt999

Snow day for the show? or a no-show planned day?
