I started out thinking the guest wasn’t too great but he won me over in the end and it turned out to be a fascinating and entertaining episode.

  • It was German law for a long time, and many Bavarian breweries stick by it, although they all use yeast as their fourth ingredient. Nevertheless Bavarians make world class beer, so simplicity works too.

  • bfr1028

A law on how to make beer WOW….. Nothing wrong with keeping is simple…less to go wrong too 🙂

  • Frank Zappa…. Genius!
    Captain Beefheart…. Equally great…..

    Love TROUT MASK REPLICA!

Seek it out, love it (Not at first) but eventually. Give it time, like wine….. ; )

  • bfr1028

How many solar orbits have you been around for??

  • RANDINTHECITY

    GARY!!!
    Garrett!!

Im not a big “Beer drinker”..but I always seem to want some when I see it being poured…hhhmmm. lol

QOTD: Not sure if you do this already, or if its even possible, but …Can you offer the opportunity to let others brew beer? How about a class every week allowing people one on one time, to tour, taste, bottle & brew? Would make a great gift to give to a Beer enthusiast.. 🙂

    Great ep..
    xo

(Using her best comic book guy voice) Best Episode Ever!

My true love has always been beer (sorry wine) It's true, beer is looked down on. I go into a restaurant and I ask for a beer and I get that snide look that I am social “heathen” or the always favorite “we make a great Cosmos” No, If I wanted a Cosmo, I would have asked for it. Now give me my cherry wheat! Ugh…frustrating!

I haven't had much Brooklyn Brewery beers (StrongIsland Girl. Love my Blue Point Brewery!) but I think I would steer toward the Weisses. That Local 1 looks good as well.

Now I have to find some and try them out!

  • I'm so excited to go, out here in San Diego we have some of the best small breweries in the USA, Ballast Point, Alesmith, Stone Brewing, so going back to my hometown and tasting some beers from another stellar brewer is a dream come true.

  • ChrisNY2

Fantastic episode! I just visited the brewery a few weeks ago and had a good time there on a saturday afternoon. Didn't realize the brewmaster was a fellow BUer, small world.

QOTD: Bring more of your beers to more retail locations in westchester. Brooklyn lager and the winter ale are easy to come by and I'd like to see more offerings! Thanks

  • bfr1028

QOTD: You should call one of your beers “Mugged” LOL 🙂

  • Not many. Only 29 years old. So…..

Think the new (if there was ever gonna be one) theme tune to WLTV should be: “Limehouse Blues” by Ambrose & his Orhestra. Really Cool stuff…. Swingin' & Comic at the same time…….. like the great host himself…….. The tune is O-L-D, i know man, but what the F*ck………….. It's smokin'
    ; )

  • C's missing.

  • fisch08

Great show guys, homebrewer in New Brunswick Canada. Have a buddy who has brewed with Brett, love the horse blanket but you have to be careful with the infectious nature. Would love to see a belgian brown.

  • Finally some stuff we can also get in Finland! =) Hehehe…

  • Orchestra!!!!! ; (

  • Ps. Finland WILL ROCK THE OLYMPICS!!!

  • Oude Hendrik

This should be one of the classic episodes. Not only educational and entertaining, but so cool to see the symbiosis. Gary, I give you a diploma for being a good interviewer. Great job. I have to admit when I first saw it I thought.. argh beer the world I came from.
QOTD: Having found the Wine World, I guess … I don't have an answer but the last beer looked cool.

  • fisch08

Goose Island makes a lovely hef, there was another in Wisconsin but cannot remember name

  • amgryger

Great Episode. I drink the Brooklyn Lager and the Brown Ale fairly regularly. I also get a little bit of the Black Chocolate Stout every year.

QOTD: I was at the brewery in December '08 and had the Brewmaster's Reserve “Savoire Faire.” Can you make that all the time?

  • amgryger

I've also had the Local 1 and Local 2. Good stuff.

  • Go for it Man! That's all….

But keep in mind… you have to taste those belgian beers…. they're like the Bordeaux/Burgundy of the wine world… Keepin'… it…. REAL! Rock ON! ; )

  • WineWoman

QOTD: Too much into wine to have an answer to that one. 🙂

  • Oude Hendrik

I remember seeing Zappa at the Capitol Theater in Passaic on Mother's Day, 1973. They finally shut it down at 2 am. Fantastic.

  • bfr1028

Gary has a lot of Zappa Attitude in him.Dont ya think???

  • b777capt

Great episode! Let's work on getting your beer out here to the left coast.

    QOTD: Love the triple Belgians.

  • StevenL

Sorry- I greatly dislike yeast re-fermentation taste in Beer.
Always use your powers for good.
QOTD- Brett and sour beer is not for me- only G.Brett.
Great Show btw- 2010 is on a Roll- Roll Tide Roll.

  • b777capt

    GV
Did you like any of the beers? You never said a word about the flavors, you just mentioned the noses.

  • Oude Hendrik

I dislike attitude of any kind.

  • I litterally just bought some Local #1 of his Brooklyn Brewery beer because of this episode. The reason is because I see it every week in the beer aisle at Harris Teeter and I still haven't tried it, UNTIL NOW! Try this beer with some Spanish peanuts and it's GAME OVER! (that's a good thing!)

  • Incredible show, Gary! I am a longtime homebrewer and beer geek (got into wine later). Have been reading about Garrett Oliver for many years now – what a creative and cool guest!

QOTD: So unfortunate that we cannot get Brooklyn beers in WA…I am personally not a fan of the sour beers, but love the Belgians – hope to be able to try Local 2 someday!

  • aaroncello

Loved the show. Really have been wanting to work in a brewery. Guess I better quit delaying and start home-brewing.
I'll have to hunt for more of Brooklyn's more interesting beer down here in miami.
Anything I'd suggest I bet you've already done.

  • cpal

    Great episode and guest.

Gary gets a little handsy with the guests lately…kinda odd but amusing. thanks for the great show!!

  • thanks for the suggestion guys, i’ll look for them both!

  • yacoub

Cool episode. Loved the guest and the beer knowledge!

  • I live in craft beer heaven, one of my favorites Double Mountain, great beer show. Life is good.

  • grellot

Thanks for the guest Gary! I actually got into wine, through craft beers ( Stoudt's beer, Adamstown, PA !!) I love Garrett's Black Chocolate Stout! Go get some and enjoy!

  • Have a great weekend all!

Success in whatever you do, all around

  • JOEYdaMUSH

    that guy is cool.

  • aaaaaarrrrgh!…somehow hit refresh on accident while doing something else…a whole episode reload over the satellite link…..aaaaaaarrrgh!

First comment to WLTV, and it's because Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout is THE brew that got me into craft beer. I had been drinking Brooklyn Lager, Pilsner, and Pennant '55 for a few months, plus some Harpoon, and even a sixer of Stone, IPA. And then one day I picked up a sixer of BCS, and I remember drinking the first one and thinking, 'what the hell is this – this doesn't taste like beer.' And then the next day I drank another bottle and thought, 'you know what, this pretty damn delicious.' Since that 6-pack there has been no looking back. In fact, as I type I've got a three year vertical of BCS in the fridge just waiting for the right night. So thank you, Garret Oliver, and whoever else at Brooklyn Brewery, for turning me on to real beer.

As to what you haven't done yet – you guys were pretty early to jump into the bourbon barrel stout fad, and apparently you are going to be pretty early into the Brett fad (though I doubt that will be as big as the bourbon deal), but you never really got into the huge-ass American style DIPAs and barley wines. I know you make Monster, but let's be real here – that brew is good, but it starts to come apart after about 18 months at most in the bottle. Maybe hops aren't your thing Garrett, but if you've got it in you I'd love to see a Brooklyn brew that glorifies hops, and tests their limits, the way DFH 120 does – something so huge, and so ambitious, and so reverential to the hops, that the mere thought of uncorking it is daunting.

  • reloading…and the speed is good. Thank the lord….this guy is awesome!

  • Oh yeah that’s right… I missed the boat completely.

They can be large and heavy & they are great with food i think.

Mixing food and beer is much more difficult than mixing food and wine, the beers can have such a wide range of different styles…

  • prohibition did a number on some serious artistic work…kudos to those that are bringing it back. Props to the Long Trail Ale!

  • hey, Sam Adams hit their craft brew limit with regards to volume per facility…I gather that that contracted out with the old Utica Club/ FX Matts people in order to spread the love…the Saranac labels came out of that project. There is greatness in keeping it small…keep doing your thing.

  • mmmmm unagi and biru!

  • a little long but entertaining, Garrett has a great voice….I bet he's a good announcer….watch out James Earl Jones;)

  • Moving to NY soon, and Brooklyn Brewing (and WL, of course) are only making me more excited.

QOD: *Love* the sour beers, would love to see more of them with the passion of Brooklyn supporting!

  • the takes on the industry, as well as the business process are priceless.

  • Omemgang!

  • Hollis, Queens… Run DMC… that is all

  • LOVED this ep…love the passion from the both of you. BTW, I'm happy to make some good trades from the East Coast. 😉 Had Local 1 and 2 and also loved the aromatics and balance in those beers. Just had the Cookie Jar Porter at d.b.a. with some buddies, though I REALLY want to try Black Ops.

QOTD: I may not be the biggest sour fan (see my buddy Dave), but lambics/geuze seem to be the “in” thing right now after super-hop loads. Since India was represented through Cardoz' beer, and others through the Local series, perhaps getting a little flavor from other countries/regions?
