line of the day – ‘Cabernet drinkers are gonna freak’

Really enjoyed this show. It’s always more fun if GV loves or hates the wines and he luuuurved one of these.

QOTD – my first date with my current fiance we shared a 2001 Justin artist series…. It was one of those nights that the wine could not taste better… SOOOOOOOOOOO good. I tried to buy more but the vintage was no longer for sale… but to this day, even though I drink wines of much greater petigree now, it is the cab I will never forget

  • NY Pete

    is that kitty secure?

  • Wow, that's a pretty exciting price point! QOTD: WOw that's a tough one, It's been so long since I've been totally blown away by a cabernet, that I can't even remember right now!

  • D_Rod

QOTD: Tough one, but I gotta go with one of the first experiences that got me a little excited and more into wine. I believe it was the 2004 Raymond Reserve Cab (or maybe the 03, not sure), but I had it at dinner with my parents and a famous Hall of Fame baseball pitcher. Booyah.

  • D_Rod

P.S. That wine is actually 8 bucks. I already put in my special request, so you better get me a case BW! πŸ™‚

  • DaveyJohnson

How can I not order the $9 bottle right now, GV you are losing $$!!

QOTD: When I went to Napa a few summers ago, Cab is King. Burgess, Vincent A, Sequia Grove etc

  • you better get more of them villa des anges GV, otherwise I might have to betray you and go to Clark, NJ.

Awesome show, short and packed full of goodness.

QOTD: Del Dotto winery/cave barrel tasting last year. had their 07 cabs right out of french oak barrels and missouri barrels. had their 100% cab franc as well. was shown around by an awesome guide (Rick). it was pure joy for about 90 minutes I spent there.

  • laurieinvt

Aaarrgh!! Just because I was out shoveling the second installment of our 15+” of snow, and then had to get supper on the table, the Villa Des Anges is sold out!! Rats! Hope I can find it around here…

  • NY Pete

to quote KAHUNA … never trust a wine taster, only trust a wine drinker.

  • Jay

    Cool episode! Very informative.

Heard Mott stifle a laugh at “jiz-oke” πŸ˜€

Oh and Etranger is, roughly, “eh tron jhey”

  • Nice show with the “gizzoak” Cabs. I'm sure to order some of the Anges only to be told it's not available.

QOTD: Lemme guess given my screenname. I believe I've told this story before so what the heck. Near the end of a holiday party of a wine friend/collector/chef I had a tap on my shoulder and I turn around and my friend is walking away into the living room waving his hand to follow him. He goes to his cellar and returns with an '88 Dominus which at the time I had never had the pleasure to have tried. Well, needless to say, the rest is history. I was enthralled and overwhelmed by this experience and will never forget it.

    Cheers!

P.S. Canada is spanking Russia like a newborn in hockey tonight! Wow

  • I knew it . . . SOLD OUT!

  • cellarrat5

NY Pete, you have to love the swig from the bottle at the end though. Classic.

  • Dave B

Best cab for me was a bottle of Caymus that I received as a gift and saved for my 5oth birthday. It was astonishing.

  • cellarrat5

What beers are you into? There are some out there like double chocolate stouts or oatmeal stouts that have somewhat similar plays to wine!

  • NY Pete

    loved the swig but … he's a spitter … πŸ˜›

  • cellarrat5

Awesome. I swore you were going to rip the Auzzie Cab apart, but it came back with somewhat of a subdued vengeance! Nice and tight, good showings all around for the most part. That Anges, as an avid Cab fan of all shapes and sizes I will have to try that one. NEVER seen a cab for 9 bones jump out of the glass like that.

QOTD: That is a tough one, great question. There was a 97 Cakebread that I was given for a birthday present that I had a few years ago. We had it with NY strips marinated for two days, garlic and Dafinouis (sp?) herb encrustation Brie stuffed mushrooms, Heirloom tomato salad and a double chocolate moose for desert. Fuc*ing fantastic meal, gave me a foocaboner (food and Cabernt inspired totally intentional boner).

  • nitaT

OLD world CAB!!! LOVE IT!! I will try and get that french cab when it comes back.
    thanks for finding a gem!

  • johnboston

    sold out. damn.

  • BFR1028

QOTD: Would have to be the first one i really enjoyed “Sabastiani 2006”

  • ZachB

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The Languedoc and the Roussillon are producing the greatest wine QPR's in the world. Im thinking a show of just languedoc-roussillon wines, maybe blind, just to see if you can find a bad one.

  • TDFord

cab s was the first kinda wine that got me into wine. I dont remember what kinda, it was probably a grocery store brand, but lately i find myself hesitant to by a cab because i also get bored with them sometimes.

  • Pat__B

    QOTD:
    Outside = Wind, snow, ice
Inside = Fire, couch, huge California Cab decanting

  • Don Simpson

Exciting episode, value plays are where its at (got 2 turntables and a microphone)

QOTD: Bordeaux. I guess thats not really a story… but Cabs I've enjoyed the most (and Merlot!)

  • Don Simpson

Canada hockey team came out w/ a VENGEANCE tonight! WOW!

  • K is for Kate

I have the Villa des Anges, which I bought on WL a few weeks ago, and was considering giving it away to a friend of mine to take to a wine tasting this weekend since I didn't pay much for it. I'm glad I watched this so I can keep it to try for myself!

I don't know that I could recall my best ever, but my best Cabernet Sauvignon experience in the past week was at a tasting of French wines last Friday at a local wine shop. They had the 2007 Les Jamelles, which I've been curious about for a while because it's inexpensive and the label is very approachable and appealing to me. I found it incredibly smooth and balanced and just so very… nice, which is not what I expect a Cab to be. I would actually say that it's probably too nice and friendly and yummy to be an interesting wine experience most of the time, but right after work alone and going to this tasting for the first time, it felt rather like random kindness from a stranger when I expected to be punched in the mouth. So, while it's not the best Cabernet Sauvignon I've had, it was a very enjoyable experience at the time. And actually, this may be what I will suggest my friend take to her wine tasting since she is a bit afraid of big tannic beasts.

  • calmonte

I don't know – Languedoc wines are they really trustworthy at all now? Is it really Cab in the bottle? When you're talking value play fro that region and the Pinot from the region isn't Pinot, how do you know the Cab is Cab even if it tastes good. So it tasted good, did it taste right for a Cab? If this wine scandal had been wines imported from China it would be front page news, but the French attitude about it has really pissed me off.

  • KW

Finally a real great buy and SOLD OUT!
The 04 Colonial Cab was a little better – a bit smoother but I though they were both great buys. Put it back at the CW price and I'll get another case.

QOTD: Robert Mondavi – 89 Napa Cab. Drank it in 99 and it was fabulous. The extra time made the wine super smooth, lush and velvety. That convinced me to start buying wines and holding onto them for a few years before drinking.

  • GYHTBT

Great show. Call me a Cab! I love it, Love it. Especially love finding a “bargin” Cab. Great tips thanks!

QOTD: Cab tasting in the '05 Sherwin Family Cab in the Spring Mountain AVA sun and then moving to their bocce ball court for additional sips. Great wine, great times and perhaps most importantly Great People. Donna is the Best. A must stop in the St. Helena “zone”.

  • corkscrew

Good show when you find a gem, will search it out. Hands down best Cab value is Louis Martini Napa Valley-$18 drinks like a $40+ bottle, have had many of their 05's and just tried the 06' and it too was great. QOTD- hummm love Altamura had it one NY Eve, had a 2000 Stag's Leap Cask 23 for Super Bowl and it was elegant, was in Napa a few years back and bought a 96' and 98' magnum of Sequoia Grove Reserve and they were awesome. Have some great Cabs in cellar in waiting for that future memorable Cab experience. http://www.winelx.com

  • QOTD: A bottle of Nine points and a ribeye off the fire.

  • My best Cab experience was based off of your WLTV Episode #74. You were raving about the Match Vineyards 2002 Butterdragon Vineyard. I bought a half dozen bottles and had one left that I drank with my family this past Thanksgiving.
As soon as I put my nose in the glass, asparagus was all over the place. Crazy nose, and a damn smooth wine. That was maybe my best WLTV recommendation. Damn great pics. That wine made the meal.

  • Phil G

My brother and sister-in-law like Cabs, so I would have to say drinking some with them would be good…

Like the quick show – good stuff.

  • thedreamweaver

I am officially coming out of the closet. The lurker closet that is. I have been lurking since the beginning of 07' and its just way beyond time. Anyway, enough of that…what brought me out about this show was the QOTD: it was a cab that made me realize that I didn't love cab but actually F***ing LOVED cab. It was the 06' O'shaughnessy Howell Mnt. cab. It might as well have been herion.

  • KVM1985

QOTD: Cabs make me think of my mother, because she likes Cabs. She is so timid and funny when it comes to buying wine (and would be APPALLED to spend more than 10.00 on a bottle) so whenever I come home she wants to go wine shopping with me because then she feels like she might as well try new wines (since it's not just for her). It's really fun πŸ™‚

  • My best cab is one I never drank. I put a bottle of '60 BV George de Latour into storage with my furniture – not exactly a climate-controlled environment – while I went off on a 2-year European assignment. I totally forgot about it. Now the bottle sits on top of my bar as a reminder that great cab can make pretty decent vinegar.

    Carlo P.
PS. Liked the show & Villa des Anges (veela dezAhnzh, approx.)

  • ONUMello

    What luck for me-
QOTD: To see an wine I randomly ordered from WL last week along with a Cindy order arrive today, only to find a brand new episode of WLTV featuring my wine… and it scored 90 pts GV (and sold out, of course!) Now I wish I would have bought a case at the time! Shame on me.
GV, what's your recommended drinking window for the Villa des Anges? Drink now or hold onto it for a couple of years??

  • Sycamore

QOTD: I try (emphasis on “try”) to seduce my wife with a '97 Napa cab every year on our anniversary. We got married in Napa in '97…….

More importantly: I want one of those cat shirts! Email back appreciated….. πŸ™‚

  • JoeyZ

wow…really stoked to buy the 2008 Villa Des Anges Cabernet Sauvignon and was really bummed it is already sold out??? Any chance you are getting more in ??

  • vinoreviews

QOTD best Cab experience was trying the line-up of winemaker Mike Smith's 2007 cabs Quivet, 12C and Myriad last summer when visiting he and his wife and later barrel sampling the 2008's. I do have to admit I am a little biased though as I am a investor in Quivet.

  • happynothing

QOTD: tasting alexander valley vineyards cab, it consistently continues to amaze me.

  • Enjoyed the ep

  • Jared Levy

Hey Gary, excited to check these wines out.
For some reason though…I feel like the Villa Des Anges was scored higher because you went into the tasting wanting it to be good rather than objectively tasting.

QOTD: Hands down, 1997 Neibaum-Coppola Cask Cabernet at Etoile Restaruant which is in Domaine Chandon in Napa. Drank this past year (2009) just as the '97 Cabs are hitting their stride. This was probably the best wine I have ever had to date and I got it for an outright steal!

  • stancolts_2010

Like the show Gary will be looking for the French cab. I can remember preparing for a tasting I was putting on and squeezing in a tasting with the Ramey rep that had come to the island. I was power tasting the wines, taking quick notes and spitting until he poured me the 2005 Larkmead Vineyard Cab. OMG it stopped me in my tracks. Unbelievable balance, laser beam of acidity that drives the flavors to a peak that was almost hard to handle. I was nearly late to my event because I had to try it again and take time to ponder what I had just experienced. I also had to invite some friends over to the table to give it a try.

  • Jared Levy

Awesome site to get married….you certainly picked an AMAZING vintage!

  • Fun episode, we expected the Susana Balbo to do a little better.

QOTD: We've been kind of down on Cabs as of late ourselves. The one 'good experience' that comes to mind is actually a $10 Texas Cabernet from Texas Hill AVA (in between San Antonio and Austin) called 'Becker Vineyards Texas Iconoclast Cabernet Sauvignon'. We had the 2007 vintage which we wrote up on our blog.
Today we reviewed another $10 Cab, this time it was a RosΓ© from Chile. Pretty good stuff, especially for the price. Cheers!

  • WineWoman

Had the first 2 wines a while back. I agree on the Villa Des Anges. Good Bang for the Buck! The Crios Cab was okay. Had another Susana Balbo blend in the same price range–can't recall the grape percentages but there was another Argentine varietal that started with a b(too lazy to look it up) and the wine tasted like bubble gum–not in a good way.
QOTD: Cab experience. Probably the Waypoint Cab at a cousin's dinner–everyone saying uuum this is gooooood. It did taste at least twice the price. We also continually enjoy Justin Cab–almost as good as the Isosceles. Most recently had a 2000 Markham Cab–certainly not a Big Boy in price or style, but I was impressed–the age definitely ironed it out and it was balanced with good fruit AND vegetables.

If laughter is the ‘best medicine’ then thanx…that last sentence was the “fix” I needed.
    ;-}

Most memorable cab experience . . . I was visiting my son who was living in NY, and we went to CLO Wine Bar in Midtown (just after seeing your show on the place). We were done tasting and about to leave, when the owner very generously allowed us to finish a bottle of 2005 Opus One, on the house. Maybe it was the surprise, maybe it was my uncharacteristically good mood, maybe it was the generosity, but the aromas and flavors of the wine are still with me to this day. Deep, complex, rich, and completely satisfying. And it was your show that alerted me to CLO.
