As far as a value Cab Sauv, I really enjoyed Fetzer for a while…but after 19 of them (over a few months) I grew tired and tried something else.

  • QOTD: After a long evening of food/drink a good friend and I sat down to a bottle of 2006 Erna Schein Cemetery Cab from Napa. Without question one of the most eye-opening, paradigm changing wines I've had in my life. Everyone I've talked to who has ever consumed this wine has been blown away on a nearly spiritual level. “Haunting,” complex, and port-like – I imagine it as a distant relative of the '47 Cheval Blanc (based on the legend and lore of the '47, not personal tasting of course). 06 Cemetery flew under the radar in critic/napa terms, but those in the know or lucky enough to try it found a whole new side to cab they never knew existed.

    Cheers

  • @QOTD
FOr me it was a sip of a 1998 Chadwick/Mondavi Sena a couple of years ago on a small wine fair. My first step into “high end” wines!

  • teckdeck2008

Qotd: It was this one wine I had in south america in this small italian restaurant in rio de janiero. wow, that trip is when i first started getting serious into wine. it takes me back too because it was 10 days of drunken partying at night and tours by day lol. fun times with some of my best friends.

Glad I could brighten up your day a little bit, but I’m a college kid and that’s what I can afford at this point. I’m sure once I’ve got a full time job and can afford it, I’ll be laughing at myself for making that comment.

  • ex_Cuse88

QOTD: On our Fifth Wedding Anniversary in Napa Valley. Frank Family Vineyards Tasting room is closed for renovations so they are holding the tastings in double-wide trailers, tres chic. It was the first time I tasted the Rutherford dust; I was in love……all over again.

  • MarcBelgium

Nice show. I just ordered Villa Des Anges, after watching the show.
Looking forword to taste it myself.

QOTD. One of the best was Pahlmeyer and Caymus.

My QOTD. Why do I always have to fill in my name and email before I can add a comment?
I have an account on Disqus.

    It took 19?????

    Hi Gary

    Awesome show.

Why don't you feature some South African wines? I think you may enjoy having them on your show and besides the Soccer World Cup is happening soon, so 'soccer vayniacks' might want to spend a litle time in the vineyards over there….

    Keep up the great work.

Regards from a South African in Poland,
    Chris

It is of course very difficult to taste objectively, when one is always subject to a day's given feelings and the circumstances around them. For example: Gary says he'd been eating cheese before the tasting which may well have affected his palate as well as his mindset on going to the tasting. Or maybe Gary could indeed give wines lower scores because The Jets had just lost.
However, he did qualify his 90 point rating by saying it could have been an 89+ and that it could be a hair light for some people. Ultimately, the only way to find out if you agree with Gary's opinion of Villa des Anges is to taste the wine yourself. Hope you enjoy it!

  • Slowwinelover

Thanks, really enjoyed that show. Loved the insight provided by your thought process on each wine, for example giving both the positives and the negatives for Etranger and Villa de Anges.
Mott's analyses of the wines seem to be getting stronger and stronger. Watch out Gary!.

QOTD: Most memorable Cab wud have to be a recent one: Clos du Val stags Leap District 2005. This is still in their old school style (which I like) but they seemed to have tweaked up the quality a notch from recent vintages. There are many more happy cab memories though.

  • Hey Gary

    Good show, thanks.

QOTD: Tough one. But probably drinking a awesome bottle of Wirra Wirra 'Angelus' 1996 Cabernet from the Mclaren Vale. I bought this bottle on my first ever cellar door visit when I was at university and carried around half of Australia in the following ten years. It drunk beauitfully and was a grea texample of age worthy Australian Caberent.

    Cheers
    Andrew

Gary, I watch your show on TiVo so I haven't seen this yet, but a big THANK YOU for reviewing wines at these prices! I live in a fairly upscale area in northeast Bergen County, NJ and the local wine merchants I know say the vast majority of the wine they are selling now is in the $15 – $25 price range because of the economy. PLEASE review more wines like this!!!

  • ben from boston

qotd – the experience i have drinking the anges.

  • The 2007 Caymus Reserve is mine too! Amazing nose, great complexity. Waiting on a bunch more Napa 2007’s.

  • Droppin' at bit O Beck there?

    NICE ; )

    Values ROCK!

  • BFR1028

We cant seem to get around that 🙁

    Keith

  • MarcBelgium

    lol

  • Thanks for bringing the Thunderlicious value show Gary! Kudos.

Qotd: Best Cab moment? That's a tricky one…. soo many….

All-time would be 1995 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill (AMAZING!!!!)

I've also enjoyed Don Melchor alot (ConchaYToro), they are always good….

Oh by the way must also mention Mentor from Peter Lehmann, although a blend, you need to seek it out, it is Superb.

That's all from me… take care all..

  • damn good show. i have a few bottles of the Anges at home, had one the other night. it is a little on the light side, but it didn't bother me at all. I don't drink cabs normally. Really not at all, so I was apprehensive on this one. Loved the low oak play, and the old world style of it.

We had it with some gnocchi, some shrimps, some olives, and then the rest out on the front porch.

  • aeggert

Gah! I really hope that you get more of the Anges in soon. I have found that my palate is very similar to yours and I really want to try it now. I suppose that's what I get for watching a day later.

    QOTD:
Best Cab moment is hard to say. I don't drink much, but when I do I always enjoy it. And I'm looking forward to having an occasion to open up one of the Cabs from the secret packs you did right before Christmas.

Most frustrating would be getting on to try and buy the Anges and finding it sold out =p so you should fix that one for me!

  • Stuart

Gary, you are a genius in more ways than I can count. THANK YOU for the passion!

  • woooooo Languedoc.

  • Ken

I was really excited about this show but don't drink a lot of Cab anymore because finding a good one at a good price is next to impossible. I honestly think you can find a decent Pinot Noir at a good price easier than you can find a well-made Cab.

I am really intrigued by the Villa Des Anges. I like the fact that this is not an ?oak monster.? I really want to buy some of this and it sounds like a great bottle of wine.

The Crios only sounds “OK” for my palate. I had the Crios Bonarda/Syrah a few years ago and really liked it. This does not sound as good. Another wine that I had that was made by Susana Balbo is the Ben Marco Malbec and it was killer.

The Colonial Estate definitely does not sound like it would be good for me. I did buy 3 bottles of the Colonial Estate Syrah when it was on Cindy last year. I rarely drink Ozzie wines anymore but I liked the Colonial Estate Syrah and it was much more balanced than I expected. Maybe I?ll give this one a whirl but the oak factor scares me a bit.

QOD: Drinking 1997 David Arthur Elevation 1147 with David Long from the top of Pritchard Hill and looking out on the valley. We had about a 4 hour visit to the winery and drank a lot of great wine. I am glad that I was not driving.

I’ve heard lots of folks will mix a not so good wine with coke to make it palatable. May have to try that.

  • darren28

    Great show G.V.

Q.O.T.D – A friend and I had a 1994 Moss Wood late last year. It was a great night and this wine just added to it. Just one of those times where the night made the wine, and the wine made the night.

Louis Martini Napa or Sonoma Cabs are a good buy under 20 and 15 bones respectively. As someone said “tastes like a 40 bones wine”. Owned by Gallo now but still reliable.

  • Anonymous

    Agree. It’s a great qpr!

  • Richie

QOTD: 1998 Sterling Vineyards. Had it with my mom and aunt about a month ago. Great wine and even greater people.

  • Love to see that old school unbridled excitement on that 1st wine! Good show.

QOTD: My friends hosted a blind brown-bag Cabernet tasting in which everyone in attendance was to bring a bottle of Cab Sauv in the $15-$25 price range. We tasted 15 different Cabs that night and MINE was the almost-unanimous favorite! It was a 2007 Owen Roe Sharecropper from the Columbia Valley of Washington. It beat out Coppola, Avalon, Beaulieu, Wolf Blass, Ravenswood, and others. I was proud. 🙂

  • englishexlurker

Its always nice when you review a wine that is also available here in the UK. Anges is £6.99 here! Better be good Gary cos im gonna buy a case! It would be awesome if you did more value shows like this.

    QOTD

Gruard Larose 89 that i had at a tasting the other day. F me it was good. Ever tasted that one Gary?

    cheers man.

  • Fonzie1568

really hope you DO order more of the Villa Des Anges Cabernet Sauvignon. The biggest complaint I have is that you promote great wines, but only have a limited amount of it, especially when you find a gem in my low end budget/price range, that is the time i really want to go out and get a bottle or 3, but cant because you are sold out and no one else nearby sells the wine.

  • sam1984

I feel like I've seen that Des Anges on the bottom shelf at my grocery store.

When I was a sapling, my parents kept around a steady supply of clos de bois and smoking loon, but one day I picked out a Ravenswood cabernet. I have no idea if it was significantly better or worse, or even any different at all, but it was the first time I had chosen a wine and demonstrably dug it.

  • Thanks for the tip on the Villa Des Anges. Hope we have it in Billings. We just had some wine classes the past 2 nights here and really enjoyed having side by side glasses of quality Cabernet, Syrah, Zinfandel, Pinot, Merlot, and Sangio to compare and contrast with different foods and cheeses. We don't get a chance to do that a whole lot around here and it's something that people should definetly try if they get the chance. It was for the Billings Wine and Food Festival and most of the wines were $20 to $30 so it made for good comparisons.

  • scottEJ

Thanks, G. Good to see there's still some *fairly* priced well made wines/cabs out there.

QOTD: Nothing really stands out, but, I know I've enjoyed a bunch of WA state cabs recently; in particular Dunham, Tamarack Cellars, Betz, Chateau St. Michelle, etc.

  • Tomorrow Finland – USA! Getting excited…. =D Who do you think will win?

    Cheers!

  • My favorite Cab would be Columbia Crest “Horse Heaven Hills” or H3 for short. Excellent Cabernet at a superb price. ($10.99)

  • Great show! like the price point.
great dish with this kind of wine!

Chef Robert's Oriental Garlic Shrimp of Love

You can add some diced red bell pepper to give this full-flavored dish a splash of color. Can be prepared in 45 minutes or less.

    Ingredients

1 pound uncooked shrimp, peeled, deveined
1 tablespoon oriental sesame oil or vegetable oil
    2 tablespoon minced garlic
    1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
1/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper
    3 tablespoons soy sauce
    2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/2 cup canned low-salt chicken broth
    1/4 cup rice vinegar
    2 tablespoons sugar
6 green onions, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
    1 cup snow peas
    Cooked rice

    Directions

Combine first 5 ingredients in medium bowl. Add 1 tablespoon soy sauce and toss to coat. Let stand 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, place cornstarch in small bowl. Gradually add broth, stirring until cornstarch dissolves. Mix in vinegar, sugar and 2 tablespoons soy sauce.

Heat wok or heavy large skillet over high heat. Add shrimp mixture, green onions and snow peas and stir-fry until shrimp are pink and almost cooked through, about 3 minutes.

Add cornstarch mixture; stir until sauce thickens, about 1 minutes. Serve with rice.

    Servings: 4

Unsurprisingly, the Villa des Anges is sold out. . . .

QOTD 1991 Rustica, apparently a one off-label from somewhere in Napa; a fabulous wine I've been trying to match ever since

  • I hope Finland wins so you can play Canada, that would be awesome!!

  • gatvalk

    J E A N L E O N PAGO,cabernet sauvignon reserva 1999……such a great stuff……

  • JayZee13

Wow! Impressive showing for the value Cabs, which I really didn't expect. However, I note that none were from the US.

QOTD: Hmmm. Best Cab experience? Oh, it's gotta be when you tasted the 2003 Boudreaux Cellars Cabernet on WLTV in episode #324. 🙂

  • eli2tyree

If findland gets ahead early it can be tough for the US… but if the US scores first there will be no comeback… and thats when the selfish players like Joikinen lose the team concept

  • ReubenLW

MY first experiance was with Flora Springs cab in the early 00's blew me away and made me a wine drinker. First wine I paid 30+ for.

  • IB71

QOTD: Chateau Leoville Poyferré. I don't remember what vintage it was.

  • castello

Check back in a few days, they may get some more.

  • Hahahaha love the Cabernet drumbeat chant! Make that into a rap song. The stone-cold reaction to the Anges is totally priceless. What a powerhouse packed 12 minutes of Cab delight. How lucky was that? Thanks for cranking out so many of these varietal-based shows…they are really awesome teaching tools to pass on to my classes. As always, you are the man Gary.

  • wrenchm

Loved the anticipation between your drink and your review of the Villa des Anges. You can buy water more expensive than that cab.

  • Thank's Gary – I just ordered a case from my local wine shop (because I live in Michigan).

  • SourGrapesFC

Wow, great show, Gary! Oak-monster, kitty t-shirt AND a ten dollar rec. We could hardly ask for more (rose petal, ha!).

I also want to say thanks for the Gourmet Library shipping code last week. I got my Cowgirl Creamery Mt. Tam yesterday, and it brings some cheesy thunder. Thanks for all you guys do up there in Jersey (Mott, Sasha, KMurph, everybody).

QOTD: I've never had a really great cab, but Concho y Toro's Casillero del Diablo cabernet is what got me interested in wine in the first place, so I feel like I owe cab something. I'll be excited if I can find the Villa Des Anges (I started reaching for a pen when Gary took the second sip).
