line of the day – ‘Cabernet drinkers are gonna freak’

Really enjoyed this show. It’s always more fun if GV loves or hates the wines and he luuuurved one of these.

QOTD: Hands down it had to be a bottle of 2001 Teachworth that I left in an empty half bottle after drinking half the first night and the second day when the wine truly blossomed it was unreal Cabernet…

  • notTheFalseD

Great show. I'm afraid I may not get to WL before the Villa Des Anges sells out, but I'm too close/too proud to have it shipped… the race is on.

QOTD – Best Cab moment happened after I spent over $30 on a Napa Cab… a kosher one at that – Herzog Napa Cab ('05?) – but still was by far a much better experience than any Cabs I'd had prior to that (and possibly since then).

  • castello

I love your chocolate blog but I need a translator.

  • try Morninton Penisula, Montalto Cab Sav in Australia….. rocks

  • Yo GV! Great play. The show has never delivered so huge with a “$8” bottle. Thanks for keeping the thunder rolling baby.

  • NY Pete

    slacker

  • Vay-ku

    My best cab moment
    Hartwell Divine cab '01.
    It brought the thunder.

  • chateauplonk

    QOTD:
    Old world: 2000 Cos D'Etournel
New World: 86 Beringer Private Reserve. Still so alive and delicious.

  • XpensiveWino

Interesting show. I too am also very hesitant to grab that $10 bottle of Cab off the shelf. What a great way to kick off the 5th year. My favorite Caberenet experience was drinking a 2005 Chappllet Pritchard Hill on the picnic grounds @ Chappellet for my 10th Wedding Anniversary! My Avatar pic is from that day πŸ™‚

  • lordsauvignon

Going out right now to get some Anges!

  • My best cab experience was a bottle of 2005 Lail Blueprint Red that Sasha picked out for me at Wine Library. One of the best cabs I ever had up to this point. Gary your Dad is a sweetheart.

  • carlo10

    …did i beat allan today!?!?!?!?!!?

  • Bill_Murray

QOTD: Silver Oak Napa 1997 got me hooked. Had it in 2005 and probably over 1,000 bottles later have yet to find one to match the thunder.

  • lawrenceleichtman

The first time I had a Napa Cab, we did a comparative tasting in 1984 of 1978 cabs including some of the biggest of the time and 6 years after bottling some of these were still huge. I had not had much Cali Cab before that and I was impressed enough to buy 4 mixed cases of cabs some of which I am still drinking today almost 20 years later. Caymus and Diamond Creek are still drinking well.

  • Good pumped up show.

QOTD: the first time I tried a Monte Xanic Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva was a memorable cabernet moment, it was the first time I didn't snub a wine and it turned out to be great actually, compared to what I was drinking and wanted no more of, a good one for me.

  • FingerLakesRVResort

QOTD: I really like Lewelling Vinyards Wight cab. Consistantly over delivers for the pricepoint($60) for a Napa cab.

  • My best Cab experience was in Napa. The Duckhorn tasting was supposed to be 5 different bottles and ended up being another 5 single vineyard bottles. The height of the tasting was a single vineyard cab. The biggest difference is this wine had terroir, which most wines I tasted that trip did not. Yes it was still overpriced, but was truly a memorable wine.

  • Can't judge the Anges by your reaction. You were too back and forth.
QOTD: Best Cab experience was fairly recent, 13 bones, 07 Windy Lane Napa Cab, very surprised how good it was.

  • johnfarrin

QOTD: Best Cab experience will probably always be the last bottle of 1970 Charles Krug “Vintage Selection” Cabernet Sauvignon that I had in 1985. It had to be tasted to be believed. You really didn't want to take your nose out of the glass but, oh when you did, and brought that nectar to your lips…. Suffice to say, I could have died contented that night πŸ™‚

  • First ever post! :
My best Cab moment was actually just last week. 07 Louis M Martini Cab Sauv. $15 for what is in my opinion a 92 plus wine. Blew me away! Gary, you really have to have it on the show soon! I would like to know more about it and the Martini label.

  • guymandude

Liked that show. Good to see a qpr cab.

  • pawncop

Very good episode – really appreciate the knowledge of the three examples tasted today.

QOTD – One of the physicians I work with (he is quite knowledgeable) has suggested the 2007 Alexander Valley Vineyards (the Wetzel Family Estate) Cab as a solid wine that was worth sampling. He was very correct. At around $15.00 a bottle, it is a very good wine in my limited experience.

I am so looking forward to finding the Villa Des Anges but here in Texas you never know if it is available.

  • Great show. I LOVE the delicious+$10 wines!!!!

QOTD: 2007 Caymus Reserve that was served at an ad-hoc dinner party a month ago. It made the mood!

  • Like this episode… but one nit… hope you reply to it…

Being on the East Coast, you often review Imports that are only available in shops on the East Coast… the Villa Des Anges is a great example…

Can you possibly keep that in mind for us folks on the WEST Coast…? Sure it's a $9 bottle, but for us to get it, including shipping, that technically takes away from that $9 experience… just sayin' … πŸ˜‰

QOTD: The first time I had a Darioush Cab… in Sedona for our 20th Anniversary dinner… a little ol' half bottle all for myself! (the Wife doesn't like reds)… it was AWESOME!!!

  • Michael D

Gary – another exciting show. It is great to find high QPR wines.

QOTD: My best cab experience may have been just today – got a deal on 2005 St. Francis cab for $10 a bottle. Have not tried it yet, but I expect big things from it. Has anyone out there had the '05 St. Francis cab?

  • StevenL

Holy Crap- got to love the wood in the mouth.
QOTD- Best Cab story- Summer Patio party recently, a guest shows up with a 1981 Giscours & Lynch Bages. Surrounded by summer Zins and beer, these gems showed a side to wine that few ever realized. Beautiful Beautiful wines.

  • davidemillombard

Nice! Funny & enlightening. So I definitely like wine, historically I'm more the guy who likes a complex, strange, strong beer (loved the Brooklyn ep). Read Crush It …better late then never (couple wks ago), and have spent the last couple days watching an unhealthy amount of WLTV. I do love a great wine an am glad to be getting entertained & introduced to the scene by you! All I know about Cabs is we go to Il Tartufo on Main St. here in Philly that serves a $35 05' (I think) house Cab that is just as much of a highlight as their ridic food (Jews from the Greek ghetto cooking Italian)…unbelievable. Anyway, I look forward to coming in some time. We are going to Tarrytown, NY this Sun..don't know if its nearby. Cheers to you and your crew, Gary!

  • jenna35

great episode…im excited to try the Villa Des Anges….anyone else have value wines they care to share?

  • DAveAll

FAST show. thanks for the “under $20” – I like finding value, so I can drive my sports cars!

QOTD: i visited a micro-winery, after tasting, they took me to barrel room and I got to taste a barrel of Cab – bought the barrel for $10 a bottle- still have some. What a deal and what a find! Yes, 60 gallons

  • zrm

Villa Des Anges wrote it down. Usual cab is a lil heavy for my taste so having be on a lighter end of cab is awesome. Going out this weekend to find it.

QOD: no stand out cab stories. It mixes better with coke than any other red. (at the low end price points i have had my fair share of clunkers)

  • MDSmitty2488

Nice show Gary, I'm kind of on the same boat; bored with cabs but if the Villa Des Anges is bringing it that hard it sounds like I'll have to seek that out.

QOTD: My favorite cabs have been from Bordeaux. I grew up in a house with a father that only drank California cab and chard (with my help he's starting to become a little bit more adventurous) so when I finally was able to buy my own wine I wanted to try something that was unfamiliar and Bordeaux was a nice outlet since many of them are cab based but have a completely different personality. Granted I haven't gone past the $25 price point but I still feel like I have a good idea of what Bordeaux is about.

  • Steve F.

Villa Des Anges!!! Oh yes indeed! Must try.

QOTD: Having the '04 Twenty Bench Cab fro Cali at $11.99 a bottle and talking with my friend's father about how we thought it was a steal at that point. The '07 is sold at my local liquor store for $15.99 a bottle. Thought it was kinda cool/insane that we could taste the value in the wine and the potential that the wine was going to gain press and it's price was going to go up.

  • Awesome to see value bringing the thunder today! Still recovering post-nasal surgery, so no wine for me, sadly.

QOTD: Tough call. I tasted a bunch of small producer cabs in Chile with my mom's fam. I had an incredible WA Cab at Blue Hill @ Stone Barns. Then, there was a reserve vertical tasting at Montelena that was fun too.

  • b777capt

Great show! Always good to see some value plays.

QOTD: I have some Paul Hobbs cabs and I took one to my latest anniversary celebration. It was the first PH cab I have popped (I have a 3 year vertical of most of them) and I was feeling a little nervous that I had spent a ton of bones for wines I didn't taste before buying. My wife and I went to Maestros for a great steak dinner. The waiter decanted the wine for us and after a few minutes he poured. It was a 2006 PH Beckstoffer Dr. Crane. WOW! A great wine that complimented the evening and steak wonderfully. I scored it 95 and couldn't stop doing the “sniffy-sniff” all through the meal. I had the waiter taste the wine and he liked it so much he didn't charge us for corkage.

  • lonnie839

just luv this episode…..have u tried Newton 2007 Cab, napa county, discounted to 16.99 and is
    great with White Cheddar popcorn!

  • Feartec

Awesome show, Villa Des Anges is not in Japan (swear under breath), Look forward to trying it one day.

    QOTD:

I was in Denver Colorado in 2007, wanted something different. Wine, I thought! That's sophistimacated(spelled wrong)!

So, I went to cost plus in Cherry Creek to pick up a bottle. I asked the tattooed wine salesman and he pointed me to a 2004 Chilean Root:1 Cab. I had no idea what good wine was, I didn't even know the difference between a Pinot and a Cab, but it was my entrance into wines. It was smooth, and amazing. After 1/2 a glass, I drove back to pick up a case.

Sine then I have been trying wines, picking up subtle flavors and smells, unique with every wine almost like a fingerprint. It's all thanks to that gateway wine, and I will always remember it as my first real discovery and thrill when it came to wine. Since then, I've been chasing down finds like that. I feel like a kid when I run across one. Yup, it's all thanks to the big flavor of a Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • b777capt

Yeah the wood in the mouth comment was hilarious! GV tried to downplay it but it came through loud and clear.

  • Dawn9850

This former Sonoma County, CA girl loves seeing the around the world cab making a good showing….haven't had much cab lately because most have been boring or over oaked.

QOTD: When my hubby and I were in our mid-20's back in 1983 (I'm old) we had a 'bring a bottle of wine' wine tasting party with friends who usually only drank beer. We thought it would be fun to see what everyone would bring. We had quite a variety, including a bottle of Boones Farm!! One of my husbands friends brought a bottle of Heitz 1974 cabernet (worth around $75 at the time??) that he had been saving for a special occasion. He figured this was as good of an occasion as any. At this time we were really getting into wine and definitely didn't have the money to buy anything like this. The three of us huddled in the corner of the kitchen and drank this wine. I remember being wowed by this wine and LOVED it. One of our best wine memories. πŸ™‚

  • robrx

Good show, everyone is looking for value today.

QOTD–Drinking a flight of cabs as the morning sun shone thru in a ring of enormous Redwood trees at Reverie winery.

  • yacochuya

QOTD: Col D'Orcia Olmaia Cab 2000 – Being a beer drinker until 2002 when I moved to Italy, this was one of the first few cabs I had tried and still have some bottles….It is incredible. Now back in the USA since 2005, not as big of a fan of the “wood in my mouth” cabs ever so common from Cali. Still prefer most of the other big Italian Varietals, but this cab stood out.

Big fan of Susano Balbo's wine and had the opportunity to meet her in Mendoza. Great wines at a good price.

GV,See you Saturday at SOBE wine and food festival.

  • CharlieTN

Good show, I think I'd buy any of those wines if I saw them.

QOTD: probably when I was studying abroad in New Zealand and my Kiwi friends and I would down about 8 bottles of wine in a night. They were cheap, but many of them were good. Any many of them were cabs. Never really had an amazing high-end cab experience. I like Napa, but it's bad QPR.

  • Glad I bought the Anges when I saw this on Ustream, since now sold out. And people say the internet doesn't have value.

QOTD: Had a Caymus Cab about 10-15 years ago with our Ad Agency in NYC and was the event that started to get me into wine. A big deal.

  • alienrelic

Good show. I have to say I really appreciate your value oriented shows. For me, wine is more of a part of my daily life than an occasional treat, I am on a bit of a budget, and if I would splurge on something it would more likely be a concert or a CD than a bottle. It's very nice to have a little help in the search for a good wine at a good price.

QOTD: A number of years ago, on New Years Eve, a friend brought a bottle of wine to our small party. My friend's father was from France, and he raided his Dad's cellar (actually I think his Dad gave him the bottle for the occasion) and brought a bottle of Bordeaux. Unfortunately, I don't recall the vintage or the name, but I do remember the wine. It was amazing, in the way that a really good Bordeaux can be. I was astounded. It changed my whole concept of what a good wine could be.

  • Forgot to mention…when I bought this week and a half ago (thanks again, ustream) I was charged $8.98, but since price listed here is 7.98 called WL and they fixed the error. Just $3 difference (bought 3 bottles) so not a big deal but yet anotehr example of great customer service by WL.

  • vpass64

Very interesting Cab show. If Gary is excited, then I might go try those wines. Hard to beat $8.

Need a Wine Library on the West Coast GARY!

  • Pro drinker

    Good show!

QOTD : Melka Metisse 2005 EASY!

  • Anonymous

He is indeed. I wonder if someone has the Patience to count every time he spits verses the time he actually drinks, I don’t but it would be interesting to find out.

  • john

QOTD: i think for the price chappellet is one of the more dynamic cabs i've given a shot. on the higher end, dalla valle.

Question for the the vayniacs: your opinion on the 2007 caymus cab? (not reserve)
i'm very “meh” on it..and i've heard totally different ends of the spectrum – interested to see where anyone else personally falls.

had a nice bulgarian cab “zar simeon reserva 07” for under 10 euro here in germany and a very nice turkish “butik reserve 06” (french oak) from the airport in turkey for 18 euro last summer
(a crossing between a nice cali cab and a serios greek redwine)

but this episode was my last great cab experience because i was bored too and came back to cab in the last time…

and i found a nice foodwine cabernet from italy veneto igt (under 5 euro supermarket)
but im sure this is a cab franc…
