line of the day – ‘Cabernet drinkers are gonna freak’

Really enjoyed this show. It’s always more fun if GV loves or hates the wines and he luuuurved one of these.

  • QOTD:The first one I tried Casa Lapostolle, now I'm hooked can't get enough.
    Need that $10 cab!

  • oregon5361

great show Gary especially in these times when all of us are looking for values!

  • oregon5361

Ok Gary I just noticed you are wearing a kitty shirt is this for one of your favorite fans on Cinderella??

  • CBone

I love the “…rose petal…” at the very end. Terrific show!

QOTD: A few years back, for my 30th birthday, some friends and I went to Napa for a long weekend of food and wine fun. In the side yard of a tiny winery who's name I cannot recall, my best friends and I laughed, drank the decent Cabernet they had for sale, and played on the bocce court underneath they had laid out underneath olive trees. It was a warm and sunny day, and all was right with the world.

  • what, this nearly. Interferring with the Olympic ski relay where by the way Sweden just took GOLD

  • castello

I ordered it already and now you say it's a little wimpy? For 8 bones I won't complain much.
QOTD Kathryn Kennedy 1985 cab brought the thunder for my life changing Cab experience. Just a few miles from my home around 1988, to find a HUGE lucious wine. I think I paid 50 bones at the winery. Big bucks at the time. I shoulda bought a case. Now it's over 100 bones.

  • Igor

Why do you continue to only show Barossa wines from Australia???? Is that all you have in the shop?? I thought you were going to male a concerted effort to try different regions?

  • Edward Salonia

QOTD: Caymus Cab special selection. '05 if I remember correctly.

  • WOW a 90 point Cab for under 10, that's something I need to seek out and FAST!!

    Nice shirt..NOT 😉

QOTD: Picked up a bottle of Castle Rock Cab from Napa about 6 months ago…it just blew me away, so smooth and eazy drinking, I think it was around $12 bones.

  • Oregon, you know GV likes to be secure.

Decent show, loved the value play.

QOTD: A QC was my best expericne with a Cab, unfortunately the high end stuff is above my paygrade :(.

  • Good show. If I can find it out in Seattle, I'm on it.

QOTD: We had a big name som come into the tasting room a while back and the owners decided to pull out all the stops and dig into the library a little bit. We opened all three vintages ('04, '05, and '06) of Grand Ciel Cabernet (DeLille Cellars). At the time, I hadn't tasted any of them. We closed the tasting room early that day due to a wedding on the grounds. We held a mini “staff training” with the leftovers… All three were spectacular, though young, but the '05 made me 🙂 like no other. A girl that I work with went with me to taste around in Woodinville and after we were done (went to four or five tasting rooms), I could STILL taste the '05 Grand Ciel cab.

    That's my favorite cab story.

  • Nice show. You sold me on the villa des anges so I picked up 3. I've been spending way too much money on wine lately, so $35 is a little easier to swallow.

QOTD – My fiancee and I shared a Ghost Block single vineyard which really blew me away.

  • castello

Please don't tell us who won what. We're on nbc tape delay out here.

  • tooch

Picked up a case of the Villa Des Anges Cabernet Sauvignon…really looking forward to it.

QOTD: Best cabernet came at an offline up in NYC. Had dinner with a bunch of the guys from the forums, and tried a 2003 Dehlinger Cabernet Sauvignon. A really elegant bottle of young california cabernet. The nose was full of chocolate, mint, dust, and pine needles. Wonderfully smooth, but at the same time overpowring. Just a wonderful bottle.

Frankly, when I look back over my 2009 notes, this was one of the best bottles I had all year. Gave it 95 pts!

  • zman15

Always looking for value these days so it's awesome you had three home run value wines today. Super pumped to try these.

QOTD: Joseph Phelps Backus is really a life changing wine if you have the loot to drop on it.

  • tooch

    haha

  • bradleyp

    Gary,

Congrats on the 4 year mark! I have been watching your show for 2 years now and always look forward to the next episode.

QOTD: My best cabernet story would be the Frank Family Vineyards 2005 that I had with my wife on our 1 year anniversary. Today is our 3 year anniversary and we are drinking the 2006. It was probably as much the setting and the company as it was the wine but a good bottle none the less and I to am not a fan of the oak monster.

  • mattgmann

nuts and wood in your mouth all in one week? maybe I should grow up……

  • mattgmann

qotd: I don't think I have any great cab experiences. I think I've had plenty of good cabs, but never mind blowing. My go to value cab however is from Casa Lapostolle. They seem to put out a solid inexpensive cab every year and I'm never afraid to buy it.

  • late_start

I'm with Matt on this one, went in for 10 (had 2 bottles already in my cart).

favorite Cab experience – bottle of 2005 Hoopes Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville enjoyed with an amazing dinner after finally getting engaged

  • WhoDat_Noir

I'm pumped about watching this when I get home…
GARY V. you came through for me
    “Ask and you shall receive”
I ask for value plays and Gary delivers. You might be one of my favorite people I've never met

  • cowz

Very interesting show, have to check out the Villa Des Anges Cabernet Sauvignon got me excited.

  • jamesculp

Thanks for the value ep, GV. This is the kind of thing I love–the CEO of my company may be able to stock up on cases of 20 year old Burgudy, but, even though I make decent money, I have a tough time spending more than $20 for a bottle. Will certainly check out the Villa Des Anges and maybe the others.

QOTD: Sadly, I don't have a cab story. I have some serious gaps in my wine knowledge (skipped from Sutter Home swill to local varietals, and am know trying to learn the rest of the world). Can't wait to have a good story, though.

  • dann_in_nh

Went in for a case of the '08 Villa. At that QPR, you just had to.
QOTD – '02 Hillside Select at the winery at their tasting event. Have a bottle aging for an important event.

  • Riverino

Been a big fan for sometime, but all of a sudden I?m confused! I had always assumed that you recorded each show the same day you published it, but then on this show you explain (for the first time that I have noted) that you have been taping shows back to back! I guess that makes sense given how busy your are; but for some rather nerdy reason I feel a little disappointed? So all in all, no great shakes ? not a problem, but QUESTION, why change t-shirts between episodes 818 and 821 if they were back to back?

  • Don Simpson

We love the shows any way we can get them! Keep up the great work!

  • abrams7

For the money I really love RavensWood Cab. It is probably my favorite super market wine.

  • Great show. I never thought about a cab from the Languedoc, although I've had a few great experiences with Bergerac. Anymore though I've been having nice value experiences with southern hemisphere cabs, especially South Africa and Argentina (esp. a $14 Carlos Basso Reservado).

Q: My second to last bottle of '97 Smith-Madrone, consumed about eight years and three homes ago. The last one's still in my basement.

  • Reverino I almost always do same day but here and there lately I have had to tape, I just am not in NJ all the time 🙁

  • as for shirt…just having some fun 😉

  • Who Dat I knew u needed it 😉

  • Thnx Bradley P 🙂

  • Looking at great value cabs, you should definitely try the Waterford '05 from South Africa. Classic style new world, smooth but loads of character, and subtle yet stunning eucalyptus tones.

  • QOTD: Skouras Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 a greek wine. most surprising wine. Very good. Didn't think greeks could do that good Cabs. Revied at Cork'd http://corkd.com/wine/view/108537-2006-skouras-

  • Riverino

Fair enough…. or, as they say over here in London rhyming slang,…. “furry muff”

  • out here? 🙂 Well I can tell you the hockey standings, no? 😀

So funny you mentioned those: last night after watching an episode, I ordered an Imperial Coffee Oatmeal Stout by Terrapin (8%). I love German Dopplebocks..my favorite is Schneider & Sons – Aventinus. Thanks for your comment!

  • madewithelements

QOTD: Value-wise: Steak House by “The Magnificent Wine Co.” in Columbia Valley WA. At the grocery store is $9 and I often pass up trying a $15 Tuesday experiment for the tried and true.

Crimini mushrooms, cheap steak with A1 = yum.

  • Neil

QOTD: Best Cabernet Memory, well, at at least the most recent, was tasting the wines at Anderson's Conn Valley. Todd is a character and his wines definitely deliver.

  • Green_Pea

    Bam….Got mine

  • wneslage

Look forward to the Anges…YEA!! USA WINS!!!!! onward my friends!

  • BrettFavre

great show — very useful, too.

QOTD: first bordeaux I ever had, which was a valentine's present for my new wife. I had more fun shopping for it and researching it, and that's what got me into wine in the first place. It was a '96 Clos du Marquis.

  • ten$under

Gary, thanks for tip on the Anges – love your commitment to the value. A few years back I had the 79 Martha's from Heitz out of magnum – it was ridiculously good – it was a gift, and I would guess not a cheap one – but, if you get the chance, make sure you stick your glass in there and say fill er up!

  • castello

West coast of the US. Thanks, but wait till midnight my time.
