  • Yep, think so…. He must have meant a RED Delisious then ; )

  • Neil

QOTD: Guitar player here. Played a lot of gigs in the '90s in the Bay Area. Jim Campilongo played at the Paradise Lounge in the main satge and we played upstairs. (The place had 3 stages). I miss that place. Met my wife there and the rest is history. I favor old world reds now but sneak in a California Cab or Merlot for kicks and giggles. We visited Napa in early February and fell in love with Robert Keenan Napa Merlot on Spring Mountain. It could possibly fool some in a “right bank” blind tasting.

When we used to gig the beverage was most usually beer. It helped quench the thirst. Not to mention most bars/clubs were happy to pour from the tap but more reluctant to give the band hard booze or an expensive bottle of wine (like never).

  • LOL ; )

  • johnboston

I like the jerky, esp. deer, and I like cheap red wine. I am part of the unoriginal 77

  • I'm with you, on all of it.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, was equally as great as Hendrix (Oh ohhhh, now people will get mad at me) But he was!

Me too, lookin' for some elegance in wine, been through the alco-bit…! ; )

  • robrx

My opinion, I watch WLTV for the wines. Though the guy may be the next Eric Clapton he “brought no thunder” on the topic of wine. If I wanted to learn about guitars I would watch guitarTV.

Hi all…Billy Penn here. Wow….. I did not expect this to post so soon. I feel like I just got home from Wine Library!!! Gary and everyone at Wine Library including Mott, Kristen and the entire staff are awesome!! They were all so warm and welcoming and made me feel very comfortable. I had a great time and will remember this for a very looooooong time…!! Thanks Gary for having me on…..!!!! If you ever want guitar lessons Gary…you know who to call!! LOL!!! -Billy

  • Thnx, great playin', and an all-time great tune. I am a Cash fan myself….

You brought the thunder to this ep. Gary was envious, i could see it happen ; )

  • Wow…that's awesome that you got to see Jim Campilongo before he moved to the east coast. I have yet to see him. I am going to try to make it into NYC to the Living Room. His new album rocks!!!

Someone gave me a bottle of Zinfandel a while back and like that a lot. I do not remember the name….. I need to make some time to learn more about wine but I'm so darn busy keeping up with all the guitar stuff!!! Good to meet you!!! -Billy

  • Thanks David!!! Gary is an awesome host and it was a ton of fun…..to say the least!!! -Billy

  • Neil

You brought a nice vibe to the show. Thanks.

Loads of energy! Where does he get it?
What is Neck dive on a guitar?

Jim Campilongo went to Cappuchino High and I went to Mills High on the Penninsula. I dated a girl from Cap who knew him. He was a good guitarist back then I can only imagine hoe he's playing now.

  • SRV……he was just amazing. I went through a whole SRV phase back in the early 90's and his brother Jimmy is great as well.

Don't judge yourself so hard about the guitar…..just play because you love it and it makes you feel good….plus its an outlet for expression. At least that's the way I look at it.

I tried a few Italian wines that Gary recommended a while back and thought they were very good. One in particular that he talked about on one of his TV appearances that went well with butternut squash. It paired up very nicely. My wife and I ruined a few squash's until we cooked one and got it right…!!

  • I can REALLY hear the Hendrix in SRV..! Also Albert King. Those are the two I hear most. Good to meet you Alan!!

  • Likewise, man. SRV has made some of the toughest covers of Hendrix songs, Little Wing is Extraordinary!

  • Thanks Josh!! I have a Lentz Strat that I've had for about 10 years or so….2-tone with maple neck and weighs like 6.5lbs…it is my favorite Strat of all time. Very close to a '55 I owned when I was the repair tech at Outlaw guitars. How do you like the Seagull??

I think I'm with you on the wine preference…..I like the wine to be a bit bold and intense particularly in the winter months. Summer I can go for a lighter wine.

  • NY Pete

where were you tonight you frackin’ bln? you missed a bunch of killer wines and some tremendous food!

  • How-do castello… Danny Gatton was a guitar playing freak of nature. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times and he was THE nicest, humble guy. We talked about Teles and Fords. I was so sad to hear of his passing and I still get a lump on October 4th….. He could play anything.

Can't imagine why I look familiar. Are you in NJ? I played a lot here in NJ and the surrounding area. Did some touring in the 90s with Dave Sharp of the 80s rock band The Alarm. I did a lot of solo stuff there for a while and lived in Nashville for a short spell in the later 90s. Good to meet you!!! -Billy

The charm of this episode was “the master” and “the common man”. Sure the wine from Aus was over-oaked, but like most of us, it has an attraction. Way to live the dream, Billy. Drink what you like and try new things sometimes. Good plan.

I guess it’s because you look the part. Rockabilly! Ray Campi was about the best show I’ve seen.

  • Bless your heart KVM1985…thank you!! Cello huh? Wow… I tried really hard to play the violin and it is not easy (at least for me). I figured if Henny Youngman could do it I'd give it a shot. I'd love to hear the electric cello through some effects. Make it all wild sounding!!

  • wpggord

Up here in Canada, I can get the Tamaya for CA$13.50, which is maybe US$13. So not bad. My government-run wine store also recommended the Chocalan Carmenere to me last year. I liked it. Nice and spicy. Socialism isn't all bad I guess. 😉

  • Kayla28

Great show Gary… one of my favorite shows Billy Penn is awesome!!
QOTD: Well Iam not a guitar player so I guess it does not apply to me…lol… but I will answer anyway… I love both whites and reds

  • johnfasc

    cool episode. good dude.
gary, can we do a brunello blind tasting?

  • CharlieTN

    I'm a drummer, so I guess the question isn't for me…

Good interviewing Gary! You even stopped yourself to let him speak!

  • I played Guitar Hero once, so I believe that qualifies me for the question.

I have done Burgundies (white and red) and Spanish wines in the past. These have been my favorites so far. I have a boat load of Bordeaux 2005 aging now and I am starting to drink quite a bit of the less popular vintages to get a grasp on how great these 2005s will be when I finally get to drink them.

Great episode! It is nice to see people fanatical with what they do for a living. The two of you cleary do that. And thanks for NOT kissing him.

  • Beeper

Best prop ever! The coolest thing about Guitar Hero is that if you actually know how to play guitar, it transfers over really easily. I could play all the songs on “Hard” pretty easily the first day I played.

QOTD: I would put myself in the same boat of loving guitar more than wine, but not a ton more. My favorites are Rhone-style reds. For just chilling with a guitar, though, it's hard to beat a good malbec.

  • Beeper

Ever heard Mato Nanji play? How does this guy seem to go unnoticed???

  • Jay

Cool show! It was awesome that he busted out a little Cash on the fly 🙂
I played a little guitar back in my school days. Never invested the time needed to become skilled though.

  • What kind of guitar do you have???

  • winecrazy

    I have 28…mosty LP's, PRS and a couple acoustics a Taylor BRZ and a Martin D-18

    You?

  • All I could think of was the 4 year anniversary show where Gary kept kissing his Father….I was like please don't kiss me, please don't kiss me… You never know where Gary's super potent high energy will take him. If you have ever met him in person you know what I mean. Its like being next to a nuclear generator or something….!

  • Wow… 28 guitars!! Years ago I had a lot but sold almost all of them to start my custom amplifier business…..doh! Anyway I now have a bout 12…mostly Tele's that I built myself. A Lentz Strat (and Tele) two Larrivee acoustics, Gretsch Hot Rod and a 175.

  • “You can't always get what you want, but if you try some times, you get what you need”….

  • Lucky yes, but on the video it stated 3 comments when i clicked. I guess my ISP had a faster connection 🙂

  • Get his new album called Orange….He is a modern day Tele-master. His style and tone are awesome!!!

  • Beeper

Hey man, nice playing on the show. You're definitely better than mine. Was just checking out your site….NICE. I recently learned how important it is to have your guitars setup correctly…sheesh….but had somebody else doing it for me. Looks like there is a lot I could pick up from your site. Thanks!

I've got a couple of guitars, but my go-to guitars are a 70's Electra Les Paul (I call it Carmen) and an Epiphone SG (couldn't spring for the Gibson…yet). The SG plays better, but neck dives like crazy.

  • Yeah….awesome! How's Voodoo Child doin' SRV style? Did you see the El Mocambo dvd?

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOO COOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUNTRYYYYYYYYYYY AAAAAAAAAND WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESTEEEEEEEEEEERNN!!

  • waynoooo daa winoooo

I caaaan't get Noooo Saaatiiisfaaaaaaactiioooon, No, No, Noooooooo !!!!!!! :o)

  • Thnx

  • I have worked on a few Electra guitars. They were cool. I love Colin Cripps and he plays an SG so I got one. Neck-dive city…..you are 100% right! Thanks for the kind words and please feel free to ask any questions…happy to help!

  • Thank you very kindly Neil..! Gary is a great host and he made it very easy for me. He is a great guy and everyone at Wine Library was awesome. This is something I will remember for a very long time….what a thrill!!!

  • I just had to pause this episode (I'm just at the part where Billy played some Cash) – to say, DANG! I love this show! I can totally relate to both the guest as “A-typical” wine lover exploring wines and being taught by Gary V – and as a musician myself (like only .00009 % as good as Billy – Bravo Billy, you rock!).

    Now… back to the episode!

  • Chris

awesome episode. I don't drink wine, but i love this show. I'm a musician and play guitar as well. Billy, have you ever listened to Elliott Smith? He's one of my favorite musicians so i'm just wondering if you have any thoughts on him.

  • Rockin' the Telecaster, baby!

For me, my palate has shifted from distinctly California to southern Rhone and Burgundy. Love the CdPs!

  • 🙂 thnx Martin
