NIce, yeah I figure dyou were into the tele scene. I once had a set necj strat solid body quilt top but I could never get into the fender sound. I guess yuo need the whole set up Amp and 57 strat to get the full effect. I love listening to guys play them, but I can't get into it myself. I once had a original 1957 Gretsch Chet Atkins Hollow Body (6120) I sold to Brian Setzer. I bought it for $500 way back before he made them famous. I got it at Gruhn Guitars. Sold it for $5K to one of his poeple at the guitar show in Long Island. What an idiot I was……I just never played the thing but it was mint. Back then I had more guitars and I just had no where to put them.

  • I've been playing on and off (mostly off, but hey – when I do play, I PLAY till my fingers are bleeding) since I was a teen, and I LOVE sauvignon blanc.

  • Hey Charlie, you know how guitarists are! So let ME ask you (I have 2 sons who can drum), what are your fav wines?

  • See…I'm the opposite as you. I cannot pick a Les paul for nuthin'. I have a Tele with full size humbuckers for the Gibson type sound for demoing and reviewing equipment. But a real Gibson, or PRS are just not for me…. I had a '57 and '60 6120. Two very different guitars. Can't say which I liked better tho. Setzer!!! I sold him a '61 Bassman it was mint with covers. He got it from me here in NJ through the Guitar Trader in Red Bank. I missed the transaction by like an hour or so….. My friend worked there and he told me Brian bought some other stuff as well. I think he got a 'burst that day too. Nice shopping day for him!!!

  • shortly before 8pm here in California and just finished watching on the big screen plasma in 1080p via Apple TV with the Bose a blastin, and absolutely enjoyed the show!! I'm the same age as your guest and I too enjoy pickin strings with a nice Calif Cab, but more importantly I appreciate how you edify your guests which brings out the best in you and your show. Keep up the great work!!

QOTD: I like Burgundy, Riesling, Rhone wines, and Italians (especially from Piedmont), but of course there are far too many great wines to choose from.

Implicit QOTD: Gibson Historic 57 Reissue.

Mott, when I'm on the show I'll play a Steely Dan tune for ya!

Gary, it's time to expand your musical palette. _Axis, Bold as Love_ and _Electric Ladyland_ by Hendrix might be a good start.

  • QOTD: Not a guitar playing kind of guy, but I'll still answer, I lean towards French Red.

  • pebblestx

Well, I play acoustic guitar (Epiphone Texan), and I really love Burgundy.

I'm afraid my DH is lusting after the Telecaster…

  • Cool guitar!!!! I tried a few of them but I am just not a LP guy… I love the goldtop look though.

I cannot picture Gary rockin out to “If 6 Was 9″……!!

  • I do not know of Elliot Smith…I will look on youtube…. Try some wine….it's nice!!

  • flavasauce

I have a Les Paul Custom I bought in 1989. It was white but has aged (like a fine sauterne) to a beautiful cream. I mostly just look at it every now and then as I think it's the most gorgeous thing I own and I stopped playing a while ago.

QOTD: Chenin and Cab Franc from the Loire, Mencia from Spain and German Riesling. If money was no object I'd be filing a cellar with burgundy <sigh>

  • Just Jack

Wow. I don't think I will know whether or not I like this episode until I sleep on it and watch it again tomorrow. I know that I will either really like it or really hate it. I just don't know which. I know that sounds crazy but I just got really different vibes watching the show. Not good or bad but different – and strong vibes. Comment back if anybody understands where I'm coming from.

  • flavasauce

Um I meant 1987 Les Paul my math is fuzzy

  • BuddhaChu

I've played guitar badly for 23 years and counting now. I've got a Washburn D10 acoustic from the early 1990s and a Wasburn Nuno Bettencourt from the mid 90's. Doug Marks' “Metal Method” training tape series on VHS was how I learned hammerons, pulloffs, palm muting, pinch harmonics, and how to play Metallica licks.

QOTD: Wines I like — German sweet wines (especially Eiswein)

  • thedreamweaver

actually wltv and my guitar come hand in hand. they are the two things i love more than anything in the world…except for my family and bbq of course. i definately like them more than my job…i know, i need to crush it. i sit down each night strum my guitar while i watch the new episode….or catch up on a few.
qotd: i also like cab. i am just now exploring bordeaux and really enjoying the cab based wines there. i also like cali cab but i am pretty sensive to oak. if fact i get so mad when i taste nothing but oak that i go to my yard and kick a tree.

  • John Martelly

Love it. I do play guitar and love wine. Go figure. I don't know if I'm a fan of genache, yet. I have been playing around with some. I find them to be very quick in the mouth and tight on the nose. I have tried a few but I'm still searching for a really good one that won't break my bank.

And that’s why your book ain’t selling…guitars & music are the man’s life (obviously). Take the blinders off and chill…

  • Hey Billy Penn: sure I play sporadically; I’ve played drums and keyboards on and off and am getting a serious urge to take guitar lessons again, classical guitar.

  • Marsh

    Yeah Mott, Steely Dan!

Gary, Gotta share with you that I had a taste of Domaine Lancelot-Royer Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru Brut from Christopher, the owner of Zza's in Oakland. Amazing.

  • great bubbles

  • Mott likes Steely Dan? Awesome!

  • ?????????????????????????????????????????????
    ???????????

  • Pat__B

Gary, Always enjoy seeing musicians on the Thundershow. There have been quite a number over the years. I think we are ready for a “WLTV: Where Are They Now?” episode.

  • tminus5

Elliott Smith was great… was saddened by his suicide.

  • weidorje1980

First time poster, long time lurker. Now that you post a great video with guitars and wine, I must speak up for answering the question of the day.

Being a bassist actually, playing jazz and 70's era progressive rock, I do like wine and prefer most of the time, a decent mid to heavy body red. I happen to love ribeye steak and always pair a good cabernet. On rare occasion I will drink a white wine or a flute of champagne.

Awesome show as always Gary! Keep up the awesome!

  • jtp375

    nice show gents.

gotta love guitars and vino, and prefer the reds myself. bordeaux, cali cabs, barolos, etc.
own some nice guitars-collings goodall, prs, gibson but am a crap player. always wanted
to live the rock and roll dream.

  • Gary my man,
I find your musical taste a little hard to believe! Gaga and BIG…no way! Ritchie I can see though.

QOTD: I've strummed a few times (wish I had learned when I was younger – 25 now) but really love love love music, especially guitar. I'm gonna say my favorite wine to drink is a nice full bodied Italian red, or a Michigan hidden gem. I went to college in Michigan and the vineyards there are amazing! (Hint Hint, Gary) I love that most of them haven't been rated by WS, RP, etc so you can make up your own mind.

Great epsiode! I can't wait for the Wine Library tour!

  • castello

I think i liked it but maybe because I like Rockabilly. We really didn't find out much about the guy though.

  • castello

We'd have to get him stoned.

  • Doh…….!!

  • castello

Wiki is not sure he stabbed himself in the chest. Twice!

  • I like to drink a nice Tannat and play Rush tunes on the bass guitar. Tannat seems to go well with Tom Sawyer.

  • I'm with Mott on the Steely Dan. Otherwise I like to pair my 'Strat with a good red of most any type.

  • jlilley

No love for the jazz players? Some of my fondest wines memories are of late night dinners/tastings with my mentor David Friesen. Great wines, good food and stories about David's experiences meeting and playing with the musicians who shaped my world…

  • ErieWineGuy

My goodness, you always come up with an eclectic mix of guests and subjects. Another very interesting show!

Great guest, great back and forth comments – something unexpected and fun.

Again I mention that your interviewing skills have gone off the charts.

Sorry, not a guitar player, but have the greatest respect and appreciation for it.

Thank you again. I really look forward to your show everyday or whenever you have it.

Oh, by the way, I really want to see another tour of your wine library – I looked for the episode sometime before that showed the shop, but didn't know what to look under in past episodes to find it.

Perhaps a several word description of past show if appropriate – like, wine library tour, malbec and cab or whatever. Maybe a kind of cross-referenced thing.

    Thanks again.

  • Jay_K

I think I'm going to break the mold here and go with whites while I'm chillaxing on the acoustic. Sav Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Riesling. It'd be interesting to survey for a correlation of musical taste to wine preference…. Higher alcohol levels and heavier red wines for more energetic music like rock and country. Thanks for the inspiration Gary and Billy

  • Lyman

I'm with you Billy, Danny Gatton is the greatest guitar player nobody knows about and I miss him a great deal. Albert Lee is another one of my favorites and Mark Knopfler.
Gee Gary we had such a good stretch of shows it was kind of sad to see 2 shows in a row with mediocre wines at best.

I just picked up the 2009 Barnard Griffin Sangiovese Rose that they fermented dry. They pick the fruit at a low brix but still with extremely full ripe fruit. I need to put some away for the summer.

  • NY Pete

without hitting the play button I can see you didn't change your shirt … 😛

    Billy,

    I have a DXM. I love it…crisp and clear. 1957 Martin 00018===> 1982 Petrus.

  • Didn't catch Mott saying he grooves to Steely…. Now i just love him more.

    Mott rules!

  • audiofan

Nice guest, show gave me a headache. The guy should play “Excitable Boy” and make it the new WLTV theme song.

I bought the guitar off of a guy that I was replacing in a high school band cerca 1959, so I would guess it would have been early-mid 50’s. (Yep, I’m that old). Call me old fashion, but I still think the music was superior back in the 50’s – 60’s. [Unfortunately, sold the guitar to pay for my first born, who is 10 times the musician that I ever was]. The amp size? Can’t recall. Something small, but big enough to rock.
    Cheers.

  • jimford

QOTD: In reds I like earthy wines like Pic-St Loup wines from the South of France that I drink along while playing my '71 Telecaster and my Taylor acoustic. In whites, crisp and with body, dry.

  • MarcBelgium

Cool guest. Nice show but no wines to talk about.
I'm a musician myself, but just classical. And, I don't like guitar. That's personal.

QOTD. Am not aloud to answer because I don't play it.

  • winestein

GREAT SHOW! Billy your a bad ass. ive been to your site a number of times. ive been playing now for about 11 years and love all kinds of music. as far as wine goes i dig it all. i love sauvignon blanc from france and new zealand. i like rhone wines and grenache syrah. big on spanish wines cause you get a nice balance of new and old world flavors. i like stinky french and italian wines. i love me some bubbles cava is a great value. i pretty much like it all though im not a huge fan of california cab and chard (i agree with gary though i formulated this opinion before i knew this show existed)

again great show guys keep it up.

  • audiofan

Top 200!!! Alright!!!!! Can someone PLEASE tell me what you win (a life, perhaps) for being the first couple of fools to comment? I mean, EVERYDAY, you guys?? Sheessh…and I thought MY life was boring. And I refuse to believe that EVERYONE on this board except myself and about THREE other people plays the freaking guitar! I mean, I need to quit my job and start makin' guitars! Cool guest, though, from the little I heard.

  • PhilBelgium

Good show. Lots of musicians are deeply into wine check http://www.dennyzeitlin.com/DZ_Wine.php great jazz pianist showing his wine cellar and a vertical Latour tasting.

  • Anonymous

that’s the great thing about clawhammer…. no finger-picks required!
check this guy out, amazing! http://www.myspace.com/adamhurt

Whites: Viognier and Gewurztraminer are my fav varietals, and I have a guilty pleasure for big ass chards. Ice wines are delicious.

Reds: Syrahs and Rhone blends are excellent, and although I’m just starting to get into Nebbiolo I’m very impressed so far. Pinots can be wonderful, but very hard to find value. Never had any big-time Bordeaux or Burgundy, so I can’t give an opinion there.

I also have a big thing for port, but once again, I haven’t had a whole lot of it. After all, I’ve only been 21 for about 7 months.

    I presume you’re a guitarist, Martin?

  • anther9

First time I heard wine called a butta face. Might have to borrow that.
