I agree on QOTD#3. I would much rather pay a bit more for wine with substance, probably from a bottle, then go cheap and get same-old.

But as I left in my comments, there was a short time when I was just drinking wine to drink wine, and the box did the job.

Trouble is, is that now again, I now longer wish to just drink wine, JUST TO DRINK WINE! I wish to everyday, move on and challenge my palate – pretty much exclusively through bottled wine.

  • Don Simpson

Yeah, its a cutthroat. I caught it fly fishing in an alpine lake near Buena Vista, CO. Hey, its about 18 inches, not bad for a cutt… 🙂

  • Don Simpson

    1 – My girlfriend
2 – I live in Arlington, VA so here are a few great spots in the DC area: 2 Amys, Matchbox, and the Italian Store
    3 – Bottles

  • mattgmann

I used to hike out to kirman lake from the bridgeport training center in the eastern sierras. Big lahontan cutts and giant brooktrout rewarded the long hike. No cutthroats within about a thousand miles from here in ohio. Not much in the way of trout period, but we have some fun steelhead fishing. Sorry to run off topic, but I'm in the fly fishing biz and get excited when I see a pretty fish.

Fun show, fellas! QOTD – 1) A brilliant college professor. 2) Mother Bear's, Bloomington, IN 3) Bottles. I'm a tragically flawed classicist.

  • QOTD1: My granfather had me help him in his vacuum cleaner shop, tearing down and rebuilding the machines..it was great to have that time with him as a little boy, and to learn to use tools.
QOTD2: Bethel, VT – Cock-a-Doodle Pizza Cafe moving to a new expanded location 5 doors down.
QOTD3: Sorry, no boxes. Tried tetra packs in Chile. Could consider using bag in ox as short term bulk storage in the home winery though.

Nice show with these guys Gary. As much as we love to salivate over your spilling of outta sight wines, its good to see quality stuff in the quaffable range, since its just that kind of juice that will expand the consumer base.
What can we do to get more wrist bands? One of the cats has made mine disappear.

  • Looking forward to getting my hands on the Show Malbec for my store. The guys were great, stood toe to toe with you on ideas. I have been a Joel Gott fan for a long time.
#! The owner of the store I work at helped me get my first business started.
#2 On San Juan Island, Washington State the best pizza is made at The Bistro Garden. Some very interesting and tasty pies.
#3 Have to say cork and bottle or screwcap and bottle. I have tried the bandit box wine and thought it was pretty decent juice.
Loved the show. Great job Gary!

  • HenryCan

So far, hands down my faivorite guests!!!!!!!
QOTD: Life in general with the help of family has giving me a chance….
Guys…please go to “El palacio de la Pizza” en el micro centro in Buenos Aires…please everybody, trust me….the best pizza in the world!!!! La fugazetta!!! Gary you would blind taste it and give it 99+ points!!! Artichoke Pizza in NYC takes second….
Boxed wine has giving me one of the nicest buzzes but…I would say I'm strictly glass.

  • bricestacey

QOTD1: Instead of hiring someone new that actually knew what they were doing, my company hired me as full-time staff from a work study position, while I was still in college. Got my foot in the door and I've taken full advantage of it.

  • justiles

Great episodes. I look forward to picking up a bottle.

QOTD2: Star Pizza in Houston is tasty.

  • Thursday

we need more bottle in the box… it rox!!!!! Gary… how bout a nice bordeaux reserve in there… I'll buy the first case!

ps… what did y'all think about the plethora of suggestions to change your packing material to something more bio friendly… I assume you use the styromess more to protect the wine from temperature fluctuation more than for cost reduction, but regardless… uggghhhh.

  • Thursday

if not boxes let's go straight to kegs….

  • johnboston

Thanks for posting part II. I was getting anxious for it. It delivered _

  • QOTD #2: Santa Clara, Cali – Farillos Pizza!

  • #3: Bottles 😉

  • QOTD 1: My Dad worked his ass off 6 days a week to send me to college and to allow me to graduate without being under I mountain of debt. I owe him the world.
QOTD 2: In the Detroit metro area, Buddy's Pizza is the place – best pies in the state, hands down.
QOTD 3: Boxer Briefs – the support of a brief with the comfort of a boxer (btw, mostly bottles).

  • robbiec

Seriously, some of the best pizza I've ever had. Try the Grecian Formula! http://www.lafiamma.com

  • audiofan

Remind me not to go to the aquarium with you.

  • QOTD: #1 – my parents. #2 – Vito & Nick's in Chicago on Pulaski Rd. #3 – because wine is always on our dining/kitchen/patio tables (wife from Florence Italy), we drink “good quality” box & bottle wine everyday. However, because I'm from Chicago, I make sure the pantries & cellar are always stocked with “VALUE” quality box & bottle wines (keep up the good work Cinderella!!).

  • Someone else who actually answered the boxers or briefs question. No, I don't think we're being too literal – gosh!

  • I like the sound of those pizzas. Is is going to be a wood fire, charcoal?

  • Very cool two part episode… and with a giveaway no less. Awesome guests! (it's next to impossible to get these wines here; nothing a good travel and shopping trip wouldn't fix.)
I agree that Malbec wines sometimes feel like untrimmed velvet when it comes to tannins; I like them.

QOTD1: long a go a widow who is now deceased hired me to rebuild her home from top to bottom and that job alone gave way for many others in the 90's since it was a complete overhaul in a über-contemporary style so radical we called it wonderland. It was a great commission. Good times.

QOTD2: Best pizza for me would be L'Anfora and Big Slice in Monterrey, both small, Italian family owned and operated restaurants. ( if you're ever in this city. )

QOTD3: Hm, no boxed wine for me although I've tried it once or twice.

  • BTW, Roger looks just like Tom Colicchio. It's kinda freaking me out.

  • audiofan

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I noticed that GV sort of danced around a definitive score with these guys; HE did not say it was a 88-90 point wine to HIM, but said: “To me, this is a 88+ to 90 point wine TO MOST PEOPLE…” Call it as you see it, or call it as you think MOST PEOPLE will see it?
I understand being easy on the guests, but this leaves alot of the regular viewers believing that GV thinks this is a 88-90 point wine according to HIS palate. If you read the posts – many now say they “can't wait to try the wine” or some variation on that theme. Perhaps I am wrong, Gary, and you really are prepared to score this wine in the range you mentioned, but I'm just saying I didn't get that general impression from your reaction and the way you worded your score. Any clarification?

  • Le_M

QOTD1: I'd say my professor at university gave a lot of opportunities to do my thing.
QOTD2: The one in Geneva, Switzerland right at Pont de Mont-Blanc. It actually is the opposite of a quiet little place for the locals, but the pizza just brings the thunder.
QOTD3: I only had box wine at parties, which maybe kind of spoiled it for me. Should give it another shot.

Fantastic show also, and who cares for objective scores anyway? GV always stated that his mood is influencing his taste and if he enjoyed the company it's totally fair to score whatever he wants.

  • castello

    Monterey Ca?

  • castello

I'm in Santa Clara all the time. Where is Farillos? No web site or ,,??

  • Good show, looked like it was fun hanging with the Thieves. In regard to Joel's QOTD, I must give my shout outs to Pizzaolo in Oakland and Piccino in San Francisco (around the corner from my house — dangerously & deliciously close).

  • mrminelli

QOTD 1 : my boss' boss' boss' boss because he gave me the opportunity I have now.
QOTD 2 : Richo's Pub is a must if you're ever near Louisville KY. Their beer list also brings the thunder.
    QOTD 3 : only bottles

I would also like to declare shenanigans on Gary's lack of notes/persona score

  • In my world there is no such thing as a free ride. Too many people today are looking for that person or people to propel them to sucess (i.e. American Idol, SYTYCD etc.). Unless you want it, I mean REALLY want it and you are passionate enough you may or may not make it. Only two things are sure in life, death and taxes. all the rest is just filler.

I did not like these two episodes at all.
    Talking, talking, talking ….

Interesting episode. Ironically last night I tried the 2009 Alamos and it was pretty awful. I was thinking about what GV said about low end Malbec and flooding the market with crap. I experienced it yesterday. Talk about the oak monster!!! This wine seems a bit gimmicky for my taste, but these guys seem cool. Im trying to learn not to judge things based upon the outside appearance. The best pizza I love is Tony's pizza in Placentia CA. I also dont drink box wine, as I have never tried a box wine worth drinking. Nice show, a bit long winded, but interesting.

  • QOTD1: a present co-worker of mine hired me many years ago in another organisation and gave me some really hard assignments which made me better as a person and employee

QOTD2: US, wtf, what about us international dudes!! best pizza i Karlstad, Sweden. My homemade

QOTD3: never box, hate box, wine in plastic, what's up with that, you can't even store them three months

  • Anonymous

    wood fire of course

  • Anonymous

    Yes… a glitch indeed…..lol

  • Allan

Where was the PASSION from these guys??? There was no real passion. Passion to make a buck, ok.

Business-men, disguised like normal blokes, they're gettin' smart, huh?

Conversation falls flat serveral times, to my ears. “This wine sucks, let's talk about the poster” Why?

I like wine, and i like to drink it! I hate posters, and i hate to eat them… ; )

I'm sure the wine was underwhelming, Gary u know best. A little more honesty please, that's what i love about you, man! If the wines crap, tell it to the nation!
Hope u appreciate MY honesty. I know you will.

Bottom-line: these two eps didn't get me fired up. Mumbles.

You'll be back strong, I know!

  • ChrisV

QOTD1: Chris Moneymaker. Without his win at the World Series of Poker back in 2003, poker wouldn't have exploded worldwide and I probably wouldn't be making my living off it right notw.

QOTD2: Here in Adelaide, Australia, it's pretty clearly Good Life Organic Pizza. They do a duck, shiitake mushroom and spring onion ginger jam pizza that goes awesomely with, you guessed it, pinot noir.

QOTD3: No boxes. Here in Australia boxed wine is derisively referred to as goon and is only really used as drinking wine by poor students, cheap restaurants and homeless alcoholics. With the grape glut and wine available at $5/bottle (~US $3), people don't need it and there is a stigma attached to drinking it.

  • ChrisV

Disagree. I was fascinated the whole ep. It was a bit of a sales pitch at time, but that's capitalism for you.

  • 88-90 Audiofanm, sorry it felt weird

  • GLrocks

Gary….was it really an 88 point wine to you ? I was looking at your reaction and you had your arms crossed ..I really felt you were not that impressed by the wine. My brother makes wines for clients in Mendoza and I drink a lot of Argentine Malbec and like you stated a lot out out of balance….. a lot like cheap California Cabs… lots of ripe fruit and overoaked. What did you really think about The Show ?

  • bobbytiger

    While I love the Malbec,
I wasn't too enthralled with this two-part episode.
I actually dosed off a couple of times.

  • Monterrey, Mexico.

  • sorry bobbyT

  • Monterrey, Mexico.

  • Junon

QOTD1: who gave me my chance? Chef Keigo Yoshimoto…hired me straight out of culinary school with no prior professional kitchen experience.

QOTD2: Magoo's is my favourite pizza here in Hawaii unfortunately they lost their spot and are surviving as a pizza wagon these days.

QOTD3: BOXER BRIEFS! its all good.

  • BruceS

One long and drawn out sales pitch that didn't deserve one show much less two. And what was up with the unusual body language? For much of time Gary sat pushed back from the table (and his guests) with his arms tightly crossed which indicates a closed, defensive position taken to cope with anxiety. That's the polar opposite of the GV we know! All in all a pretty weird pair of shows.

  • GLrocks

Oh yeah….I do have a poster coming my way though …Thanks GV !

  • Allan

    Agreed!

    Bring back the real GV!

  • slave2thevine

QOTD: #1: “Hoopy” gave me the best opportunity of my life to work for an outstanding command office and surround myself with the best there was in the field to learn from.

QOTD: #2: If you ever find yourself doing a “college” tour and you're up here around Bangor/Orono Maine…you will want to search out Pat's Pizza in Orono Maine. They have a cult like status around this little area…and to my taste make an amazingly simple and wonderful cheese (or Pepperoni) pizza.

QOTD: #3: So I guess the question was “Box or bottle”? Then I'm strictly going with bottle. I've bought the boxes in the past…it was a great “entry” into wine for me when I was drinking it to get buzzed….however, I would rather drink less of a more layered wine today..so I'm buying bottles.
