Sorry but I need at least 15 minutes of you Gary. Slow food, slow wine and slow love. 😀
Oh yes I DID just make that up!

  • Neil

QOTD: I like the truncated formats. A lot better than the “Best Of WLTV” that you did years ago.

  • unclemeate

    AotD#1: Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
    AotD#2: 12 minutes / 42 seconds

  • LMNOPinot

QOTD: I want full blind Gary and 17mins of it.
PS. What are the points for in the comments?

  • Lyman

I'm more of the 10-15 min. crowd.

Are you going to do the blind final 4 this year? I have to tell you that my school won last year. The blind not the national championship.

  • Cristian M.

QOTD 1: I find it more interesting when you don't know what varietals are you trying. Not easy to accomplish though, since different bottle shapes (and weights) usually tell the story in advance (even underneath the brown bags). Maybe someone else needs to serve you the wine (The long awaited Mott's cameo ????). Three wines are perfect for blind tastings.

QOTD 2: Between 10 and 15 minutes for solo shows, and up to 25 with guests.
Guests two or three times a month, at most. They don't need to come from the wine world, but at least they should be opinionated and/or passionate (it is boring when they just follow you).

  • Richie

QOTD: I think this length and style is ok every once in a while. The length should be different. Everything from 5 to 25 minutes is fine in my opinion. Stuff thats 30 minutes and more should be 2 parters.

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • Allan

    Gary!

The Best Things In Life Are Free,
just like your show!!! ; )

  • priuslover59

Like the short format. I watch this from work so 10 minutes or less is ideal.

  • rwino

I like when you do 3 or 4 wines, blind, same type/region/vintage. 15-20 minutes.

  • rwino

    How about some blind verticals?

  • slave2thevine

    same damn shirt….

  • cellarrat5

Classic! Faster technology, fast cars, fast pase, fast food; I swear this will all come back to bite us in the ass if it has not already.

  • QOTD1: new format is OK… I like the mixing it up (aka muscle confusion).
QOTD2: I like around 20 minutes based on the hundreds of shows I've watched in the past.

  • dwalkperc

NOT ABLE TO SIGN IN THROUGH TWITTER. HAPPENED LAST WEEK ALSO! WINDOW STARTS TO OPEN THEN DIES. OTHER WINDOWS WORK. Ideas anyone (and yes I turned off Pop-up blocker. Now to comments:

HAHA! Favorite ending to an episode in a long time!
QOTD1: I always love the BPB episodes and think they could make a more regular appearance. As far as this goes, it gets my fix in just fine.

QOTD2: I think variety of length is just as important as your variety of wine. Say what you need and I don't care if it's 4 or 40 minutes.

  • Allan

    Well, duh!!!

  • DFbwp

QOTD 1 and 2: This format is a little short, but I love blinds. How about 2 wines for 10 minutes, no sports, just wine?

BTW: Crushing it trying to sell my house– it's perfect for a new Duke or UNC medical resident. Twitter @davefrau if you want info on it or on life in the awesome Southern Part of Heaven, Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill NC.

  • Allan

Ask Mott about… oh no, he's having a day off!

  • cellarrat5

This sliver of a show was better than the last in my opinion. Took a few more seconds to review, although it was quite obvious you were rushed (with the swirly sniff and all). That being said you defiantly deserve a vacation from all of us and the hustle, hope you had/have a great time.

QOTD 1: The “new” concept is good, although if this became a regular occurrence I might only be able to take a couple weeks of it. I agree with everyone regarding the knowledge factor, and also believe that in most instances these quickies cut down on a lot of the vicarious wine world experience I started watching for in the first place.

QOTD 2: about 12-18 minutes solo depending on what you are poring and how much explanation it needs. Blind tastings should get a little more attention. With a guest depending on how informative and knowledgeable they are 18-25 minutes is good.

  • zrm

    short sweet

QOD1: I like the format its nice. For a quick epi blind is better
QOD2: 30min or so is my prefered length. I want some serious epics though. If you were to do 3 quicks(3-6min) one medium (12-18min) and one long (22min+) a week I think it would be solid.

  • I like the brown paper bag idea. It eliminates any bias that may be perceived.

  • Allan

Guest shows should always be over 20+ minutes! Oz Clarke anyone??? Jancis was great, now let's get some Oz action… he will probably not be interested.

Sir Mix-a-Lot Gary! Mix it up!

  • QOTD: Don't like the format at all. HOWEVAH, you need to travel and take vacations and I think it's great to leave us with brief episodes while you are away. Thanks!
QOTD2: The most enjoyable time length for me is 20+ min.

  • Bredsun

QOTD: Great format, go to love the blind; great call on that btw…but its a little too short of a episode for my liking. 10-40 minutes is a big range for what an epii should be but depending on what the episode is about I think its a good time length.

  • KAHUNA

Your kid isn't even a year old and you already need a vacation without her- man you young kids today are soft- Back in my day we actually took our kids on vacation if we took a vacation at all! Candy ass!

  • MikePos

Funny, I was just about to say something about these shows. I don't like waiting around a day or two for a 5 minute show. I like more time with you. I can watch any length of your program. But the best is break time (15 minutes).

  • slave2thevine

QOTD: Time length – anything less than an hour. I don't like to two part shows…I'd rather have one full episode.

QOTD: Concept – I like the blind tasting…but multiple bottles. Single bottle is a little lame.

Overall: You and Lizzy deserve a great vacation…I hope you can find the time to leave EVERYTHING ELSE alone…it can be a difficult balance.

  • KAHUNA

I find very little California Syrah I would be willing to be on a mailing list for and to pay shipping for- very few float my boat these days –

  • Bill_Murray

Great call on the origin and $Px. Also, thanks for the explanation on the shows this week. QOTD for you: Where did you go on vaca? Hope somewhere warm although im hearing youre missing some amazing tri-state area weather . . .

QOTD: For blinds i like multiple bottles (compare and contrast). I like longer shows, i would say the sweet spot is 20 – 30 minutes.

I dont love the multi-part episodes in general because typically they are just a function of going overtime and NOT a function of cliff hangers: Remember like saved by the bell when they were working at the yacht club or went to hawaii etc. Each episode ended on “…to be continued” with an intense cliff hanger; thats what you need for a multi-part episode.

Maybe like youre tasting a couple brown paper bags and find a real winner. Then all of the sudden your dad shows up out of no where at the 25 minute mark with “three wines that will blow you away” and you challenge him to a blind taste off his 3 versus the winner from your Part I blind tasting. I realize there is a fine line between reality and script, but you see where im going. Could do a line-up of Cali's with and get through 75% of them with the big boys chilling out in decanters for episode II. Tons of iterations of ways you could go on those.

Outside of that, 20 – 30 minutes, wines from same area or same grapes from different regions are good, and mix in some superstar bottles every now and again because as a viewer, its always fun to dream of sippin on some '82 Latour.

FYI for all – Suckling out saying 2009 Mouton and Latour are slam dunks. Not into Bordeaux but looks like 2009 is the year to get on board.

  • Mott

What makes you think I kicked the cord out?

  • drt999

Qs of the day — a tougher challenge would be an opaque and no info!
I enjoy a mix, like really do like the 3 wine-15-18 minute shows

  • Allan

Sorry man, I love u… Was it Brandon. I'm comin' ta get him!

  • Allan

I really liked you in Broken Flowers, Lost in Translation wasn't bad either ; )

  • drt999

re: points I think they refer to the # of times someone 'likes' your posts, but no idea what they might be 'for'

  • Allan

    LOL

  • weighdownsouth

For me…. and like you said, I don't want to start any arguments, but for ME- I like the nice tight show… I like it 5-10 minutes.

Not a big fan of the multi-part show!

    I really enjoy!!!

    Thanks!

  • mattgmann

qotd- I like the concept, except with only a single wine you should be completely blind, including the varietal. And if anybody gives you crap because you mistake a which bank a Bordeaux is from, I'll knock their teeth out for you. In fact, with myself included, I think even seasoned wine drinkers would have a tough time guessing varietals in a blind tasting.

As for lenght ~15min for a normal show with the 30-40min epic once a month or so. But the occasional 5min one and done is ok too.

  • Cristian M.

Hey, what about you double blind folded, with a mistress whipping you every time you are wrong. That would be an instant classic!!!!

  • Allan

    Yep!

  • Bill_Murray

Haha, surprised it took so long for someone to make the comment. My favs are Groundog Day, Ghostbusters I, and Life Aquatic

  • Allan

Agreed with you my friend. I've tried many times guessing about wine, and it's almost impossible. The lenght, i dunno. If the content is good…. hell, everything goes!

  • Just Jack

Allen, I know that GV is taping all in one day, but doesn't it just subconsciously give up quite a bit on the nose? It is like my brain is thinking “it must be a little ripe in GV's office” even though I know the deal.

Maybe it is worse because that silver shirt kind of looks like one that I had in high school. I was wearing it at a dance and Jodie Scotchless got a little whiff of my personal Eau de Cologne while we were dancing to Journey's “Open Arms”. It destroyed my social life for months.

  • Greg

Definitely get on the list for this one. Pax and Pam Mahle are really doing some great things in Forestville, and branching out into some new varietals. If nothing else, go on the website and read about their process. Very old-world, sustainable methods. They've got a nebbiolo from California that will hopefully be coming out soon. Great people making great wines.

  • ONUMello

QOTD1: Hmm, wish I would've known about the vay-cay before I dissed the format after the last episode- I like it, I just wish it were >1 wine. These go by a bit too quick.
QOTD2: While I appreciate the tight shows, especially if your schedule is packed, I really like it when you get really into the wines & share tons of info/knowledge, so I'm gonna say 20 minutes. It would also be great sometime to do a 'super-tasting' like you did a few times back in the double-digit episodes, just a quick bang bang bang through 6-8 wines to compare & score (not that scores matter, of course!)

  • Good call on the wine
Stopp fidgeting with the feet Mott 🙂

Vacation is a good thing. get som sleep, relaxing, loving…

QOTD1: Blind tasting is good once in a while. Tight shows are always good

QOTD2: All depends on the topic, but the ones with a couple of wines, little wine knowledge and some other chat between 1015 min is the best for me

  • Allan

Have thought about it since i saw your first post. I'm slow, what can i say!?!

Yeah, Groundhog Day is a Classic!

  • Taking the kids everywhere, isnt that real curling? Making the kids soft 🙂

  • Bill_Murray

is that a Mott icon? Youre die hard

  • dsallen

LOL I love the surprise ending. I'm into that sort of thing. Props to GV for nailing the wine! I also like to see hard-working people take a break. Good for you.

QOTD1: I'll say this: If you had a tv show and blind tasting was a daily segment, it would probably be my favorite part.

    QOTD2: 18 min and 43 sec.
