line of the day – ‘a little truck driver armpit on the nose’

Crazy facial expression at 6.50. The wines stunk but that often makes a good show

Good show. I watched the Sauv Blanc right before this one, and I laughed a lot more at that one. But this was a solid, palette verification for you GV. But a sancerre and a bourgogne in a blind pinot tasting??? I know that Bourgogne brings some thunder, but I would never have bought either one of these wines.

QOTD: Attempting to rebuild and restain my deck. Any one got any advice? Has anyone ever used a paint sprayer for deck stain? Not even sure if that is possible. I guess that I answered a question with a question, didn't I????

  • Not all the wines can be winners. Good show.

QOTD: Furthering a new tradition of “Corral Saturday.” Psyched.

  • looper1313

My brother in law is morel hunting this weekend. He has already set up 3 appointments with high end restaurants in downtown Chicago to sell them to! Look into it. Untapped market alert!

  • Phredd3

Too bad about the wines. It happens.

QOTD: Just watching the kids play sports and playing a couple concerts. One of them is outdoors, so I'm praying for no wind. I'd rather have a rain out than a windy day.

  • mattgmann

I've sold them before….can normally get north of $40/lb, even more if I run into black morels. These will be for personal consumption though.

  • mattgmann

forget the paint sprayer. Get some paint rollers that will attach to broom handles. Most deck stain is pretty thin, so application with the roller is a breeze.

  • I just bought a Laforet 2006 (Bourgogne Pinot Noir) and I am looking forward to drink and get my bearings on it, hope I like it more than you did these two.

QOTD: no plans yet but a lovely dinner and conversation are in order, so we'll do that.

  • I'm surprised Mott came back after yesterday's episode w/ the zooming in! haha
QOTD: Going to get some nice summer whites and take it easy on my spring break before I go back and teach.

    Favorite summer wine anyone?

  • adrums

QOTD: playing a couple of concerts (Brahms, Berlioz, Canteloube), one of which will be followed by a Syrah tasting with some of my peeps. Cal v WA v Aus, with maybe an hermitage ringer in there, not sure yet.

  • Eh, too bad about the Pinots, it happens. At least with wine you learn things, even when a tasting doesn't go as expected.

QOTD: Stopping by Martin Alfaro Wines in Corralitos, CA on Saturday to pick up a 2007 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir for a dinner party that night. It's really a shame to drink it this young but what the hell, it's delicious.

  • NY Pete

    hey hey

  • zrm

Blind Pinot glad to see it!

QOD: studying… and getting a new bottle of wine. Something i have never had before. Going to be fun Maybe a white Burgundy or something

  • A dumb Rhein king

I disagree with the Sideways is a good movie statement, but thought the rant was spot on and hilarious.

  • Gary,
I think the brown bag shows are a real winner, so please continue to do them. To bad about those two Pinot's, I guess you cant win' em all. Good to see a french pinot thats not from Burgundy being reviewed. Anyhow all the best.
    qotd – Im working unfortunatley.

  • sharon

Pinot is not my cup of tea. I haven't tasted one yet I liked much.
This weekend? Well there is antipasti night and wine tasting along with some coffee and crossword puzzles in the morning. Gardening, puttering, cooking, eating are also on the agenda. Maybe I'll call the kids and read them the riot act. Or not.

  • That is not a weekend. That is a kick a** weekend. Very jealous.

  • Lyman

QOTD: I've got a little party to go to Saturday night with a theme, Sparklers! I'm bringing Prosecco, someone else, I hope, is bringing the Cava, I think Cali will be represented and the host is sticking with France. I'm also bringing a desert topping of sorts, PX!

  • I guess I'm not heading for the Pinot Noir aisle.

QOTD: Spring cleaning, church concert, stuff for a wedding….quiet weekend.

  • JR

    QOTD: work work work.

  • mattgmann

I didn't really care for the Laforet 06 pinot. It was non offensive, but watery thin.

  • wow, our morels won’t be up for several weeks yet in VT…you must be quite a bit farter south?
bubbles is a great call for pairing…sauteed in butter with just a dash of sesame oil…mmmMMMMmmm

  • Gotta go Piedmonte Nebbiolo w/ Morels! Have a good weekend 🙂

  • Just Jack

It’s a good move. They are taking a well traveled marketing path: Gain huge market penetration using price point, and then create secondary product lines and do everything you can to differentiate them from your core brand (Think Toyota/Lexus). The interesting thing is that it works just as good in reverse (building a market for a high margin product and then leveraging that market to spin off affordable subs).

  • boomy13

School work and work work. Perhaps some fishing or hiking if I plan well.

  • ONUMello

Wow this show had 100% less energy than yesterday.
I just picked up the Foris PN today along with the value Chard, when I saw the title I had my fingers crossed it would be included, but the CT scores had nothing but good things to say for 14 bones!
QOTD: Putting in some time at the emergency room for my last pharmacy school clinical rotation- not going to be a CKC much longer!

  • chimed in over at cork’d…it’s brand prerogative, and if you are hip, you need to stay hip…

  • Monica

Working, studying for algebra test, and going out with the girls for a birthday Sat night! Good times!

  • Hey everyone, what are your thoughts on Yellow Tail Reserves new labels? please read the article-> http://bit.ly/asH3Pk

  • Globex

the wife & I love a good Pinot Noir, but certainly can be a tricky varietal.

QOTD: I think I overheard the boss as she was talking to her girlfriends on the phone last night mentioning http://www.southcoastwinery.com to do on Sunday. I'm not sure if us husbands are included or not, so it could be beers & golf or wine & vineyards… she keeps me on a need-to-know basis. 🙂

  • norcalwingman

    How about a 91 point pinot http://wp.me/pR9kq-3D

Going Wine Tasting! Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County Baby!

  • the article is dumb.. they are adding this new line to make more $$$ and they will probably succeed. i dont like yellowtail, i think there's plenty of interesting wine out there in the under $10 range more worth my time, so i wont try this new line, but im sure fans of yellowtail will.

  • cellarrat5

where is waynooo? oh well… I LOVEEEEESS MEEE SSOME SHRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • tooch

QOTD: Doing a 1997 Brunello tasting with Keith, Ward, Shane, et al in Chicago. Notes will be in the WAYD section of the forums.

  • Hey Gary

I like the show: fast, efficent and too the point.

QOTD: This weekend should be cool – school reunion Friday night, Italian wine tasting Saturday and my brother visiting Sunday.

    Cheers
    Andrew

  • alienrelic

QOTD: Yardwork. It's springtime in Florida. Lots of yardwork.

  • jeff

QOTD: Friend in from China so two dinners out. Dinner on Friday at Lupa and Saturday and Eleven Madison Park (hopefully there will be some good wine along with the good food at both places).

The question is, what are YOU doing this weekend?

  • jaybloxham

Gary, you needed to drink a Red Bull before the show today. I love you man, but no thunder today. Everyone has an off day, don't sweat it. I have to say, I love the shirt.
QOTD: Sitting back inside (it's going to rain all weekend) and drinking a new Portuguese wine and a few others. We will call it expanding my palate. I have to give you props on the Torrantes grape it is one of the most interesting white I have ever had

  • Chilemily

Don't have any definite plans, but I'm thinking a BBQ (an asado as it's called in Chile) and definitely some wine drinking with great company!

  • NY Pete

u better not be spitting out any 97 BdM's … flyers suck … so do the phillies … 🙂

  • mattgmann

Have you ever hear the expression “Like putting lipstick on a pig”?

  • QOTD: *hopefully* getting to review either a 2005 Bordeaux or a Riesling with my friend for my wine review blog (click my name for the link).

  • tooch

no spitting, and both of those following comments aren't true.

  • plcb

QOTD: It's little league season and I have 2 sons. Therefore we will be at the ball fields weather permitting. And I'll work at the PA wine and spirits shop. The 2005 Murrieta's Well Meritage came in this week.

  • QOTD: I'm trying to find a job this weekend! Anyone in Oregon? PLEASE HIRE ME!!! I've worked in wine for over 10 years and moved out here from SC to find a job in the industry. HELP!!!!

  • Good show, not much going on but it doesn't always have to. I had a Pinot from Western Australia but it was past it's best as an 07. I don't always agree with you on the drinking wine too young debate.

QOTD: I am going vineyard planting in North Yorkshire this weekend (basically half way up the UK) It's too cold to let the grapes ripen really and not cold enough to make icewine – we do it for the love. Followed up by a good old hog roast and go watch/play some cricket on Sunday.

  • laurieinvt

Umm, call a contractor and help boost the economy? 😉

  • drt999

    QOTD — a little work, a little wine . . . the usual!

  • Thanks, I'll get my tongue around it and get back to you on that, cheers!

Wow…home early. The poor benefit was a flop. I doubt we had 3 dozen people watching our band. But you still have to play them all with a smile.

  • Anonymous

I must admit, I downed about 6 $1 PBRs tonight. At least Pabst is still American owned, and I stack it a notch above Bud/Miller. I am admittedly a beer snob, but a guy needs a cheap drink now and then too. The problem with all of the great american beer is that it’s expensive. If you guys can find Founder’s on the west coast, I suggest you stock up. In my mind they might be the next dogfish head/bell’s. They’re putting out some of the most balanced hoppy beers I’ve had in a while.
