QOTD: I over-mashed some yukon gold potatoes, and the resulting texture was unbearably gluey.

  • NIB

Well haven't had a Beaujolais for awhile and…… to be honest I'm not sure I'm going to anytime soon.Let me quantify that statement by saying I generally like bigger full body wines, and I live in Oregon so when I'm in the mood for something a little bit lighter I always have access to the kick as pinot's we have around here.

QOTD:When my team the Vikings traded their only first round pick to the Lions, and they drafted Jahvid Best from Cal.I really thought we would take him,but we did end up with Toby Gearhart so I guess it wasn't all bad.

QOTD:No I don't have a sniffy sniff wrist band, or any other wrist band from you for that matter. Not that I wouldn't be apposed to wearing one if you were to send me one…..

  • this could be interesting…a little gamay in the house?
we just had a beaujolais blanc at the office last week.

  • flavasauce

I first seduced my wife in 2007 with a 2005 Chateau du Basty Lantignie not a cru but tastes like one. Just baught a case of the 2007 it's a great QPR.
Qotd1: I have the first 3 wristbands. Anyone wanna buy them off me? 😉
QOTD 2: Had an amazing weekend, saw 2 old friends, my brother in law, and Yo La Tengo at the Fillmore. Only disappointment is I didn't get much work done but it was worth it.

  • dsallen

QOTD: I wasn't really disappointed this weekend! It's good to be me.

Actually, I had an awesome weekend…

  • mattgmann

I find beaujolais to be awesome party wines. Cheap, light and easy drinking. I've had one or two cru beaujolais that really were home runs, but my recent experience with them has been a little lackluster.

  • Gary,

I have the first four wristbands and as a collector yourself you know that I am dying for the complete set. If you could find it in your heart to send the remaining bands, I would be over the moon excited.

QOTD- Biggest disappointment was a Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2006 ($193.99 Canadian). The wine did not bring the thunder in any way, shape or form.

  • Hey, if you are trying frontenac you must be up north here somewheres…where you at?
Frontenac is amazingly dark in color given how little tannin it provides…have had it as a decent rose, but usually best in blends. Lincoln Peak Vineyards in concert with Champlain Valley Vineyards, made a maderized Frontenac Gris two years ago that was killer. Keep trying, and see if you can get a hold of some Marquette this year!

  • Alexandre-CF

    Hey Gary,
that was funny, i'm actually in a Beaujolais rush right now, The Best so far was the 07 Marcel Lapierre – Morgon – cru beaujolais, really nice.

QOTD #1: I don't have it. I'm from Brazil, how can a get one?????????

QOTD #2: The big sisappointment was that i had to study all weekend, really sucks.

Gary say hello to Brazilians fans.
    Cheers.

  • Alexandre-CF

    Nice show by the way.
    great energy

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

Yo Robert, i feel your Pain !! Every White Burgundy I've had in the last several
years have been Big Time Duds……

  • d'oh…I feel your pain. yearning for a little kuboda, but the new roof and siding comes first!

  • flavasauce

Yoko is like Beaujolais, misunderstood and highly under rated.

  • pbarr

G – Give it up…air quotes are in your DNA. Just go with it my friend.

QOTD: The Yanks lost last night. Other than that, I had a great weekend.

  • wirelesswine

I actually tried that '02 Champs Grilles in January and thought it was very odd, but drinkable. It had a ton of minerals, with almost a blood-like characteristic. I wonder if my bottle was in better shape? Why not offer some rock-bottom pricing rather than pulling it?

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

Yeeeeeeaaaah, like 10 cents a Bottle wit Free Shipping……….

  • drydrew

    QOTD: Got strep this weekend
    P.S. Love Drew!?????

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

If my dream comes to fruition, you'll be the first on the list!

  • Cubatobaco (Ray)

    Amen!

  • I heard the old folks in Beaujolais say that if you let the wine cellar for long enough…it can rival some pinots from the rest of burgundy.

  • side QOTD: no sniffy sniff band, and the cats stole the statue of liberty band, so I am empty…what do I need to do do get on board again?

  • …I'm Polish/Italian and hand signals have always been an important part of my communication…air quote if you must, but you are capable of far more creativity.

  • GFish

GV – Beaujolais is a worthy topic so no hate coming from me. It's good to have some clunkers because that's how you learn and you need to spread the knowledge as much as the love.

QOTD – Biggest disappointment this weekend, I made a white wine/shallot reduction suace with wasabi/soy/butter that emusified well. When I took it to a friends house it separated and fell apart. That's ok because my tuna steaks with sesame seeds seared in olive oil still came out delicious and a good time was had by all.

    GFish – Peace nad Jets.

PS – The Iron Sheik tweeting love to GV, what a strange age we live in. It's be great to see him, Nicolai Volkoff and you together discussing wine and wrestling.

  • QOTD: total VT story..a couple of weekends ago, I helped a neighbor pick up a big roto-tiller so that he could clean up an overrun edge of his lawn. He was going to give me gas money, but I jokingly said that wine was the preferred transaction liquid. He said OK and gave me a bottle…a bit below the shoulder, some sign of seepage, the label is torn so it is hard to make out but it is, or rather, was a 1963 or 1967 Chateau Calon-Segur. The cork did come out in two solid pieces tonight, and there definitely was some faint perfumed remnant of sweet fruit, but alas the rust of time had worn her poor heart down. I'm going to go back down to the cellar and check the decanter one last time before bed. Sweet dreams all.

  • Illegal_Formation

QOTD: It ended. Also, Sean Lee went to the Cowboys. My condolences to him.

  • BillK

Iron Sheik has been on the Howard Stern show in the recent past. He's hilarious. I think/hope most of his f-bomb act is a schtick. Doesn't take much to get him riled up.

  • QOTD: the weather

  • Nice show despite the disappointing outcome. Love the lesser known, value-play regions, especially those from France like Beaujolais!

Yo BurroBoy, Nobody said Life would Always be Fair…………. :O)

  • KVM1985

QOTD: That I only got one day with my boyfriend…and that it went by so quickly!

  • If you cellar a great vintage such as 2005 Moulin a Vent it should age for up to 15yrs.

  • I have tasted $20.00 wines that were superior to the Corton which is rather sad.

  • Good analogy, although Yoko was the catalyst that brought about the end of the Fab Four.

  • Anonymous

Pfister…..what a great name! I wonder what he does in his spare time. Pfist?

  • lhsanders

Awesome that the show is still so fresh that new and unexpected things can happen! And as for the wines tanking (so to speak), I guess it just makes it all the more special when some unexpected varietal shows well and OWNS us all. 🙂

Thanks for taking the risks anyway. It's great that you give a fair shot to varietals that are the equivalent of a bad neighborhood.

  • chukheadted

very honorable of you to give a fair review of the 02 and pull it from the shelves. can you talk more about how we can tell when a wine is over-the-hill or 'dead'?

  • Greg B.

Big G, First QOTD: Got the Sniffy Sniff Wristband. Yes!

QOTD: Not picking until the third round. Ouch!

  • I like Beaujolais a lot and my favorite experience with it was in 1994.
I found a couple of magnums of 1989 Morgon and my girlfriend and I enjoyed them immensely.

QOTD: No disappointments this weekend. All the hockey teams I like are advancing and I had a great dinner date Sunday night.
    Good time of year!

  • Re the Sniffy Sniff wristband: yes, I have one and wear it all the time.
I still need the green/Statue of Liberty one!

  • Re: Louis Latour Corton Charlemagne at the Playhouse WineFest?
Yeah, we tasted the same wine and commented how boring it was at the time.
Biggest white Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy + one of the biggest negociants/labels
= what do you expect? This was probably the weakest LL CC I have ever tasted out of
    maybe 10-15 vintages.

  • Oakmon’s BF

    I couldn’t say, I don’t know your wife.

  • Oakmon’s BF

    Finally some support! Thanks guys.

  • philanderson

First of all, thank you for Leon Washington. I'm sorry we stole him from you for only a future 5th round pick, but, the Seahawks are a needy bunch right now and it's go time! As for the QTD, I would say that Sunday sucked for me because I didn't get really anything accomplished and that makes me a bit cranky.

  • Allan

Awesome Zoom-in on the first wine Mott!!! ; )

I've said this before: “Mott is one of the greatest all-round camera men out there.”

“Air quotes”; just do them G.

Well the wines…… Meh i guess. Sorry 'bout that, i feel your pain G. You'll be back i know.
Thnx for bringing old world back, keep it up, and i'll be a happy-chappy………

    Qotd1: Nope.
    Qotd2: I got a bill i wasn't expecting, so i was a little down. But now i'm on the up'n'up again.

    Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeers!!!!!

Ps. Rheingau Riesling G, it could rock!!! ???? !!!!!!

  • YoungDave

CRU BEAUJOLAIS!! I've been pushing a couple of Morgon and Moulin-a-Vent at the restaurant quite a bit over the last year, with great feedback. Excellent show concept, even if all of them didn't perform… you should've reviewed some Debeuf Nuveau…HA!!

QOTD (sidebar): YES I have the “Sniffy Sniff” wristband, and I'm proud of it!

QOTD: I hoped that I would meet up with a lady from my past after work on Saturday night, but I guess it wasn't in the cards for me. Disappointing to day the least. Cheers.

  • waynoooo daaaaa winoooo

I know EXACTLY what You mean!! Never had a wine that cost 194 Bones, but I’ve
tasted $20-$30 Wines that COMPLETELY BLEW AWAY $50-$70 Wines…….

  • Excellent! You folks have a lot more grapes growing out there, and I had heard tales of pick your own…we’re not there yet, but I believe it is coming. I’ve actually got a dozen Petit Pearl coming in the early part of June, along with some others. We are really excited about the potential of the whites, and I’ve been tasting a lot more Austrian reds thinking that the cold hardy reds should be tried in that style, and stay away from the oak, which can just overpower their delicate structure. We tasted a bunch of stuff from last year’s harvest at a pruning workshop a few weeks ago, and one fellow’s Marquette was showing very nicely.

If you are looking for vines check out http://www.nevinesupply.com/ . Northeastern Vine Supply is run by a really great guy named Andy Farmer over in West Pawlet, VT. They’ve got both bare root and potted vines, and his material is very high quality…he supplies many folk here in the north east. Good luck, and we should touch base during the season. Cheers!

  • Just Jack

GV I think you should do all the “air quotes” you want. I mean, if that's “the way you roll”, what are you going to do. You have to “stay true to your DNA” (I think I heard someone say that before). I think you should just “roll the bones”, “take your chances” and embrace your “inner quotes”. Don't think of them as “air quotes”. Pretend that they are just “mini finger hugs” that show how much you “care” (think “chapter 9”) for your loyal “user base”.

QOTD Side: No wristbands. I haven't found the right time to get hold of any schwag yet. I will get some soon though.

QOTD Main: I got bit on the leg by a brown recluse spider and had to go get all kinds of shots. No joke, it was very disappointing.

  • philoxera

    Mott-e-zuma!

  • kasperhip

    YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
Finally you address “dead” wines….I've been waiting for this for AGES! Great that Ian picked that wine, and great that the thundershow (once again) took an unexpected turn. I am so looking forward to checking out this category.
QOTD1: Nope, live in Denmark, you don't ship here….I would LOVE to have one, though.
QOTD2: I didn't get as much work done as I would've liked to. Besides that no disappoinments, just sheer glee. Had LOTS of great wine this weekend, and some friends made an awesome dinner to go with it. Oh yeah, there was one actually: a Gavi di Gavi I was looking forward to trying turned out to kinda flat. Lemonwater, really. Oh, and the Louis Jardot one of my friends bought disappointed HIM hugely. I wasn't really expecting anything so I was ok with it.
